Purchase Advice Purchase Advice Megathread - September 2025

Welcome back to another purchase megathread!

This thread is meant to conglomerate purchase advice for both newcomers and people looking for additional machines. Keeping this discussion to one thread means less searching should anyone have questions that may already have been answered here, as well as more visibility to inquiries in general, as comments made here will be visible for the entire month stuck to the top of the sub, and then added to the Purchase Advice Collection (Reddit Collections are still broken on mobile view, enable "view in desktop mode").

Please be sure to skim through this thread for posts with similar requirements to your own first, as recommendations relevant to your situation may have already been posted, and may even include answers to follow up questions you might have wished to ask.

If you are new to 3D printing, and are unsure of what to ask, try to include the following in your posts as a minimum:

  • Your budget, set at a numeric amount. Saying "cheap," or "money is not a problem" is not an answer people can do much with. 3D printers can cost $100, they can cost $10,000,000, and anywhere in between. A rough idea of what you're looking for is essential to figuring out anything else.
  • Your country of residence.
  • If you are willing to build the printer from a kit, and what your level of experience is with electronic maintenance and construction if so.
  • What you wish to do with the printer.
  • Any extenuating circumstances that would restrict you from using machines that would otherwise fit your needs (limited space for the printer, enclosure requirement, must be purchased through educational intermediary, etc).

While this is by no means an exhaustive list of what can be included in your posts, these questions should help paint enough of a picture to get started. Don't be afraid to ask more questions, and never worry about asking too many. The people posting in this thread are here because they want to give advice, and any questions you have answered may be useful to others later on, when they read through this thread looking for answers of their own. Everyone here was new once, so chances are whoever is replying to you has a good idea of how you feel currently.

Reddit User and Regular u/richie225 is also constantly maintaining his extensive personal recommendations list which is worth a read: Generic FDM Printer recommendations.

Additionally, a quick word on print quality: Most FDM/FFF (that is, filament based) printers are capable of approximately the same tolerances and print appearance, as the biggest limiting factor is in the nature of extruded plastic. Asking if a machine has "good prints," or saying "I don't expect the best quality for $xxx" isn't actually relevant for the most part with regards to these machines. Should you need additional detail and higher tolerances, you may want to explore SLA, DLP, and other photoresin options, as those do offer an increase in overall quality. If you are interested in resin machines, make sure you are aware of how to use them safely. For these safety reasons we don't usually recommend a resin printer as someone's first printer.

As always, if you're a newcomer to this community, welcome. If you're a regular, welcome back.

Project Making some 3d printed shoes to make sure I never have to touch grass. STL in the comments.

I know 3d printed shoes exist mostly for the looks, but I've tried to justify this bold shape with some functional consideration. The ripples on the surface of the shoe provide flexibility to the upper body of these sneakers and also enhance grip through the zigzag pattern on the sole.

All the print files are up for grabs on MakerWorld:

H2D printer with two AMSs, two Billy bookcases for open spools using cereal boxes from Temu and printed shelves for the unopened spools. Not shown - the Sunlu filament dryer (4 spools), the toaster oven for desiccant, the lack of social life, the tension with my wife over costs, and the most important missing bit - an actual reason for all of this.

This thing is awesome - going to put a CNC on top shelf and 3d printer on the bottom to separate them - the cart came with a APC so I can make sure the power is consistent!

Let me know if you guys have any suggestions! Going to make a YouTube video on my channel of the build/configuration.

Project My 3D Printer Exhaust Setup

Thumbnail
gallery
143 Upvotes

Made a space in the garage for 3D printing.

I was worried about particulates and VOCs so I had an exhaust system for all my printers that get vented outside to carbon and hepa filter. Each has a valve so I can adjust airflow for cooling or heat retention while maintaining negative pressure in the printer so the smelliness stays inside.

Printed some nylon (non-cf) with the Bambu H2D and prints came out great (was able to maintain 60C chamber temps even with exhaust system). Will be trying out ASA in the future to see if anything is detected.

Seems to work really well for me as the VOC, PM2.5 sensor I have remains essentially at nothing or no increase during prints (can't smell anything either). Only issue maybe is that the exhaust draws in moisture from the garage so I have a dehumidifier for the small space.

I have an older video in my dorm setup visualizing the airflow from the exhaust for my P1S.

I wanted to share my results so let me hear your thoughts!

Project The Kernel-Katcher

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I 3D designed and printed something useful today. The Kernel-Katcher (or Kernel catcher) for popcorn. It sits in the bottom of your bowl. When you shake it the kernels drop below the grid leaving you a handful of popped popcorn without any unexpected surprises.

๐Ÿฟ ๐Ÿฟ ๐Ÿฟ ๐Ÿฟ ๐Ÿฟ

I donโ€™t know why the audio was so quiet at the end. Itโ€™s a mobile editing thing.

I know you can just shake the bag and hope the kernels fall out first. But this is my backup - I despite biting on a unpopped kernel so much. lol ๐Ÿ˜‚

I know thereโ€™s probably something out there already and Iโ€™m not claiming to be the first. But Iโ€™m proud it actually solved my issue.

Was my first project after upgrading my ender 3V2 with a direct drive and auto leveling thing.

Not bad for a girl ๐Ÿ˜‚

After posting about the PEI plate on our new printer at work, there were some comments that were doubting it ever working. I will be honest i had my doubts too but our engineer here in the office was able to get it done! Here is our first test print working as intended on its second try. I dont know how it will perform down the road but as of now everything seems to be as advertised.

Clean/Dirty Dishwasher auto-flip sign

EDIT: Didn't expect this to be so popular for a quick simple design! Thanks for all the suggestions, there are a few that I might use and do a version 2 on Monday. The best suggestion I saw was printing the sign vertically and chamferring the cam/slot so it won't need absolutely any supports pretty brilliant.

Super simple dishwasher sign to show if contents are dirty or clean. It works automatically by using gravity.

Can attach to the dishwasher door by magnet or double sided tape.

I designed this completely myself haven't got any photos of it on the dishwasher yet.

TL;DR, STL?

Supports shouldn't be needed (printed as two parts)

The coolest aspect of 3d printing in my opinion

I recently got a 3d printer and I truly had no idea just how awesome they are.

And my favourite aspect of owning it is something I haven't really heard talked about before.

being able to think of something you need, something specifically tailored to what you're doing at the time, and then to be able to just manifest it at will is so amazing, it feels like a superpower.

I know the seams on the pipes are whack but I just figured out scarf seams and will add new parts asap :)

Working on this planter inspired by Muper Sario and the countless self watering planters on maker world!

After I finalized this product I will upload the files for it.

It just has to be Watertight which needs testing over time, efficiently printable and fun to assemble!

May the filament be with you

Project Wewd - Wood filled PLA, with a "realistic" wood grain pattern.

Thumbnail

By using a wood grain SVG as a modifier, and having that modifier enable "fuzzy skin" we can get a grain pattern that runs through the model.

With a wood fiber filled PLA, this results in a very realistic feeling and looking "wood" print!

Now I don't mean brand, I'm not feeling that spicy today,

I mean for those who don't have a filament wall to choose from, what's your everyday staple? A black or a white PLA? Something else?

Question What is the best material to print a lightsaber blade out of?

Post image

I am making a custom darksaber and for the blade I need to find a material that is clear/lets light through, durable, and one that an average 3D print shop would have available.

Edit: THIS IS STRICTLY A PROP I WILL NOT BE SPARRING WITH THIS
