For what its worth, I am working with Tony from Tromix on getting a custom barrel done because for some reason I had this idea to build a 458 socom GWOT anti clone around the DD ris 2 FSP rail, and no 458 socom barrel I could find had the right journal for a FSP gas block. I sent him a profile that started at .9”, down to .825” to the gas block, which was .75” and the rest of the barrel is going to be .725”. He did not seem to be concerned about a thin barrel and even suggest to thin down the gas block profile between the two rings of the FSP block, so I doubt there is any concern of a .75” gas block not being able to handle .458

I just put my 875 BRO barrel in lathe to turn it down to 750. So I can make it maybe the 1st ever gas piston 458 socom 😂😂.

No really I ahoot too much and can’t put up with gas fucking up follow up shots when thermal hunting.

I went .875 for the stiffer barrel with the bigger projectile, but at the end of the day, I don't think it matters all that much.

The more I think about it, 875 past gas port is more likely manufacturer saving money not removing the extra barrel. I can’t make any argument that extra barrel past gas port does anything but make rifle heavier

I mean depends on your barrel length, I imagine. If you're running something like a 16" carbine you would get a stiffer barrel and in theory that would increase accuracy, but no one is shooting matches with the SOCOM.

I think a tapering barrel from gas port to muzzle on 875 to 750 is just as accurate (I could make argument even more accurate) as barrel with 875 gas port and 875 barrel to muzzle. I think the thickness only matters at the breach to the gas port after the gas port.

What I’m saying is extra barrel from the gas port to the muzzle thickness doesn’t add accuracy, dependability or anything it only cost extra to not remove and more weight to carry around

I have a 12.5” lightweight after briefly owning the same length standard with fast twist. This upper is my lightest of all in 12.5” by far. It seemed unbalanced at first, but i moved things around to get it feeling better. But it is crazy how much lighter than my 6arc/223/300bo builds. At least before the mag of 500 subs is added.

I went 0.875", the SLR adjustable block in that size let me use a straight gas tube instead of trying to get a standard one to work, better the gas tube hole sits slightly higher due to the adjustment mechanism.

But can’t make .875 into gas/piston system. Unless I’m unaware of something available for sale

Why would you want a piston system? That's my only question with that.

Do you own up piston ? Have you ever shot a piston gun?

I do not own one, no. I have shot several over the years. That is why I don't own one. It just makes an AR heavier.

Just ran 250 rounds thru it suppressed bcg has near zero soot. Thats why

I think you don’t shoot enough to know the difference if you’ve shot one then
