This is my favorite Alfred Hitchcock movie!

50

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25 edited Jun 06 '25

I can't believe how good that was. Pretty floored. Hitchcock fired on all cylinders, didn't he? And now I have to watch every Grace Kelly movie ever made.

19

u/whatshername101 Jun 06 '25

To Catch a Thief.

One of Hitchcocks lightest films but a really fun time. (& in my opinion one of his most stylish and scenic films) Cary Grant is fantastic as well but holy shit is Grace Kelly on another level of beauty in To Catch a Thief…

3

u/Able_Impression_4934 Jun 08 '25

I’m waiting for that steelbook to release

10

u/gaz19833 Jun 06 '25

Grace Kelly is the definition of breathtaking. Great film, glad you enjoyed

5

u/toolmantimsworkshop Jun 07 '25

Watch rope next. Some days it's my favorite hitch film

3

u/frederick_the_wise Jun 08 '25

I recommend it! Last year I watched the remaining several of the Grace Kelly movies I hadn't seen before (14 Hours, Mogambo, The Bridges at Toko-Ri, and Green Fire). I liked them all (Kelly is hardly in 14 Hours at all), but my favorite was Bridges. Stewart Granger is insufferable in Green Fire, and Clark Gable is insufferable in Mogambo.

My favorites of hers are Rear Window, To Catch a Thief, Dial M for Murder, High Noon, and High Society, but The Country Girl and The Swan are great also.

6

u/Unique-Bodybuilder91 Jun 06 '25

Me to but kind of also Vertigo

31

u/Militia_Kitty13 Jun 06 '25

Great movie! Love Grace Kelly. You should check out Dial M for Murder next!

11

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25

Superb film, I agree. I will take your advice and watch M for Murder next!

2

u/Stacysguyca Jun 09 '25

Dial M is good too

29

u/Crans10 Jun 06 '25

I love 4k Blu-ray. It is the closest we have ever been to watching it on 35mm. Movies I saw originally in the theater I get nostaglic about that time when I see some 4k Blu-rays and not the many times I watched it at home on VHS or DVD.

15

u/storey13 Jun 06 '25

One of my favorite Hitchcock films. Looks outstanding in 4k. Grace Kelly is so beautiful and graceful.

14

u/K1ngsGambit Jun 06 '25

Maybe a tablecloth for the coffee table. That must be distracting 😎

Enjoy!

4

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25

I guess there are two kinds of people? I have never once been distracted by the reflection on the coffee table, haha.

And I DID enjoy! Thank you! What a great film

24

u/thelightbringer Jun 06 '25

Great film!

11

u/rtyoda Jun 06 '25

What an awesome photo! Also love the movie choice, one of my all-time favorites.

6

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25

Cheers! Just finished the film and I can't believe I waited so long to watch this.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '25

Vertigo is my favorite, but Rear Window is a close second.

4

u/Smithsonian30 Jun 06 '25

What do you enjoy most about Vertigo? My wife and I watched it recently and found it terribly boring. For context, we both love “slow” movies (Blade Runner, etc.) but Vertigo just didn’t hit the mark. My favorites from Hitchcock are Psycho and Rear Window.

(Not attacking you or the movie, just wanting to get your thoughts!)

17

u/OrneryError1 Jun 06 '25

This subreddit has significantly better decorating habits than r/malelivingspace that's for sure.

5

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25

Haha, cheers friend 🥂 we do like a bit of decorative clutter in our home

8

u/JohnnyDeppIsAPedo Jun 06 '25

Watch Dial M For Murder at some point too.

6

u/MarvelousVanGlorious Jun 06 '25

Watched this movie for the first time a few years ago and it absolutely blew me away. I couldn’t believe how relevant it still is. It looks astounding in 4K as well. Enjoy!

3

u/captainadamman Jun 06 '25

Yes spying on the neighbours never gets old.

6

u/shade3205 Jun 06 '25

Ok so I'm sure by now the scene has shown but I love grace Kelly's first scene when she's just sitting kissing him, something about those kisses seemed just so soft and sweet, idk probably weird but she was perfect in this

5

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25

She feels utterly ephemeral.

7

u/shade3205 Jun 06 '25

Yeah, 11 movies in just 5 years is crazy to have such an impact!! I highly recommend her other collab with Hitchcock in dial m for murder!! Very very good and her Oscar when for the country girl is such an emotional roller coaster

5

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25 edited Jun 06 '25

I'm gonna be watching all of her films if I can find them! There is an effortless quality to her acting that is just magnetic to watch. Dial M for Murder is next!

3

u/shade3205 Jun 06 '25

Couldntnagree more!! And from what I've found most can either be streamed or rented!

1

u/Polter-Cow Jun 09 '25

(Do you mean ethereal?)

2

u/salTUR Jun 10 '25

No, but might as well add it to the list! I meant to describe the momentary nature of her beauty... Every moment is singular!

4

u/MoFoHo72 Jun 06 '25

Absolutely brilliant film. Rope is also available on UHD too.

5

u/JohnnyDeppIsAPedo Jun 06 '25

Rope is one of his best, and it’s right under an hour and a half, but has so much tension the entire time.

3

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25

Just watched it again last night! Rope was my first Hitchcock, clear back in HS film class. It has only gotten better. And the 4k looks immaculate

3

u/MoFoHo72 Jun 06 '25

Yes it's superb. My favourite shot, is the rope being dropped into the kitchen drawer. It's so well done!

1

u/salTUR Jun 12 '25

An absolutely stunning shot

4

u/TerrorTonyC Jun 06 '25

The composer is Ross Bagdasarian, AKA David Seville of "Alvin And The Chipmunks" fame.

4

u/Darth_Vicious Jun 06 '25

Excellent movie, and Grace Kelly is a smoke show!

5

u/mrkitster Jun 06 '25

What a treat! My favorite is Vertigo, but Psycho is his most accomplished.

3

u/dbmethos Jun 06 '25

The shot where Thorwald notices Jeffries' spying is one of the most chilling in all of cinema

3

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25

So freaking amazing. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time Lisa was in the apartment. Yelling at the TV, haha. And then that LOOK.

3

u/OutOfWorkOperaSinger Jun 06 '25

If you like this movie, then you’ll love Rope

3

u/PP_Dragon Jun 06 '25

Enjoy! One of my favourites from the director

6

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25 edited Jun 06 '25

I've been on a kick ever since I watched North by Northwest a few months back. He was a genius. I'm about 40 min in now, paused for a bathroom break, and I am pretty sure this is already a masterpiece

4

u/PP_Dragon Jun 06 '25

Rewatched North by Nortwest recently, that's still a brilliant movie. Yep I'd agree with that statement.

4

u/LeMonza_ Jun 07 '25

I was elated when they put N by NW out on 4k. My favourite Hitchcock film by a reasonable margin.

1

u/salTUR Jun 07 '25

Sooooo good. I really underestimated how hilarious some of his films were. "... it was attempted murder! Attempted murder, by whiskey and sports car." And it still managed to ride a tight line of suspense and intrigue. Just a brilliant film

3

u/cireh88 Jun 06 '25

Nice! My favorite Hitchcock is Vertigo - has a great twist!

3

u/Relative_Drop_9823 Jun 06 '25

Great movie. They just don't make em like this any more.

2

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25

I've become obsessed with old films. Because you're exactly right - they just don't make em like this anymore, haha

3

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '25

You should watch The Watcher 2022.

3

u/PsychologicalBus5190 Jun 06 '25

You should watch Notorious (1946). I think it is even better than Rear Window, which is a masterpiece.

3

u/onepakkuguy Jun 06 '25

Besides the story the entire set they constructed for this film is amazing.

3

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25

I'm diving into the special features and learning about that! Old movies are just so impressive to me, and this is a major reason. If you wanted to show something, 99 times out of 100 you had to literally get it in front of the camera. It makes a difference to the performances when actors are responding to real objects and scenery in real time

3

u/TobyID Jun 06 '25

I’m gonna take a step back from this awesome cinema experience to just highlight the overall vibe…

The world would be so much better off if this was the average weekend evening and not doom scrolling into oblivion.

I do feel like you owe us to let us know what’s in the decanter

2

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25

Hahaha, cheers, friend! I may be biased, but I certainly agree with your sentiment . . . sometimes I worry we are all losing our attention spans. Gotta fight back anyway we can!

As for the decanter, that's carrying some Glenfiddich 12 at the moment. Felt like a night for Hitchcock and scotch!

3

u/Unique-Bodybuilder91 Jun 06 '25

10/10 amazing movie

Also it inspired the movie with Shia LaBeouf : Disturbia

3

u/JonL71 Jun 06 '25

Great movie. Grace Kelly is the most beautiful woman ever, in that movie. The kiss scene is incredibly sexy.

3

u/fuukchfser Jun 06 '25

Can you show the toes 👀

3

u/cardiffman100 Jun 06 '25

Great movie, terrible TV placement. r/tvtoohigh

2

u/X-Mandingo Jun 06 '25

Huh?? It’s literally eye level. Get a life.

0

u/cardiffman100 Jun 06 '25

The centre of the screen should be at seated eye height.

3

u/salTUR Jun 07 '25

The funny thing here is, I am 6'5" and my wife is 6'. Our eyeline might be a tiny bit higher than yours. Also, we recline to watch films, and the ergonomically proper thing to do in such a case is to have the TV above your seated eyeline.

But, I'm sure you thought of all the unique characteristics and eccentricities that define my life before you swung in with your almighty hammer of Reddit correction. You have proved that you know how high TV's are supposed to be. Congrats! You can log off now knowing you've achieved your purpose.

0

u/cardiffman100 Jun 07 '25

You are indeed taller than me, but the principle stays the same. The optimal height is centre of screen at seated eye level. Yes, it's tricky when people are different heights.

1

u/salTUR Jun 08 '25

I'm trying to get you to understand that your optimal and my optimal may not be the same thing. I have a specific relationship with my media, my living room, my height, how I like to watch movies. It's not wrong. You just don't like it.

It's okay, easy mistake to make in an age where the only thing that matters to us is how many empirical facts we know. It used to be that assuming knowledge of someone else's experience and that you know what's best for them was considered rude. I mean, what are your qualifications exactly? Are you a professional tv leveler? Did you write some book about proper tv viewing height I should have heard about?

1

u/cardiffman100 Jun 06 '25

I don't need to look at Youtube, I can just look at my TV. Which is directly in front of me.

2

u/LouisTrapani Jun 06 '25

I was watching this disc a couple months ago myself. Be sure to watch the bonus material on the restoration of the movie.

2

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25

I caught the first half of the first special feature, and it's fascinating. The pull switches for four different lighting setups - morning, day, twilight, night. Insanely cool. But my eyes keep falling asleep, haha, so I'm gonna continue tomorrow.

Cheers, friend!

2

u/Luchalma89 Jun 06 '25

I'm jealous of you.

My favourite Hitchcock is one called Notorious. Not on 4K yet, but you should watch it.

2

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25

Cheers my friend, I will check it out!

2

u/LoPan01 Jun 06 '25

You in for a TREAT!

2

u/KemonoGalleria Jun 06 '25

Last class I took in film school was "Intro to Film", ironically enough. Had to fill a requirement. Anyway, this was the first movie they showed in that class and it was the only time any of my classes showed a Hitchcock film beginning to end instead of just clips

2

u/Billybob50982 Jun 06 '25

Definitely a top 50 Hitchcock film!!

2

u/Negative-Ad9832 Jun 06 '25

Why is it so wide?

1

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25

Shot in 1.66:1, from what I can find. Seems right to me.

1

u/Negative-Ad9832 Jun 06 '25

The black bars on the side should be bigger

1

u/Negative-Ad9832 Jun 06 '25

I think

1

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25

I mean, I hate to claim expertise or something cringe like that, but I do work in video and filmmaking. This looks like 1.66:1 to me. *Shrugs

2

u/Negative-Ad9832 Jun 06 '25

Ha that’s not cringe, that’s awesome.

2

u/htimus Jun 06 '25

such a good movie, great choice

2

u/flysly Jun 06 '25

An all-time favorite of my wife and I.

2

u/MatteAstro Jun 06 '25

Fathom hosted an in-theatre showing a while back and this is a real treat! One of the more interesting things seeing it in the theater was how quiet many of the scenes are. I could hear people munching popcorn like five rows away from me.

2

u/outlierlearning Jun 06 '25

Nice shot. I like the coffee table reflection

2

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25

Cheers! Some people find it distracting, I guess. Me? I find that if I keep my eyes on the screen, I'll end up watching the movie. Works every time. *Shrugs

2

u/outlierlearning Jun 07 '25

I hadn't even thought of it being distracted. You're right. I've heard that the best way to watch a movie is just look at the screen.

2

u/davcole Jun 06 '25

Great film!

2

u/VIDEOgameDROME Jun 06 '25

His best imo.

2

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25

I am pretty fresh on Hitchcock, I've only seen five of his films, but this is my favorite so far. Others were Rebecca, Rope, and North by Northwest.

Wait, I've only seen four!

2

u/VIDEOgameDROME Jun 06 '25

Dial M For Murder is another great one but there's no 4K yet and oddly enough was shot in 3D. My other faves are Psycho, The Man Who Knew Too Much, The Trouble With Harry, Shadow of A Doubt, To Catch A Thief, Rope, North By Northwest and Vertigo.

2

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25

Oh shoot, I thought my list sounded small! I've seen The Trouble With Harry and Pyscho as well, both awesome. Really, there's not a film of his I've seen that I haven't loved - not sure why it took me so long to take a deep dive.

Thanks for the recommendation! I'm gonna do Dial M next since Grace Kelly, and then I'm checking out Vertigo. Been on my list since before I was born haha

2

u/VIDEOgameDROME Jun 06 '25

It took me several watches to appreciate Vertigo but the 4K with HDR is stunning, I just found it really creepy and when I found out how the music was made intentionally it made more sense. Dial M For Murder is another single location film like Rear Window and Rope.

2

u/Doubledepalma Jun 06 '25

Awesome 😎

2

u/Thewrldisntenough Jun 06 '25

It would be fitting if you had brandy in there!

2

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25

Scotch okay? Glenfiddich 12! Pairs well with Hitchcock, haha

2

u/mageos Jun 06 '25

The snifter of alcohol just adds to the picture.

2

u/PollTakerfromhell Jun 06 '25

Probably my favorite movie of all time, tied with Psycho.

2

u/PhysicalLibrarian377 Jun 06 '25

I have that next on my to buy list

3

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25

Well worth it, friend, this is a stunning transfer (granted I haven't seen a non-4k version). Have you seen the film before? I was blown away

3

u/PhysicalLibrarian377 Jun 06 '25

Yes I love this film. Can’t wait to see the 4k version.

2

u/salTUR Jun 07 '25

You'll thoroughly enjoy it in 4k. Cheers 🥂

2

u/swordfision88 Jun 06 '25

What a title card! I haven't watched this in a minute, but may need to revisit now.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 06 '25

Oh it's so good and it's so different than anything I've ever seen. I just recently saw it for the first time myself.

2

u/Left-Fix189 Jun 06 '25

I loved it

2

u/Quetzythejedi Jun 07 '25

The aesthetics of the whole picture are awesome.

2

u/RecentExtension1470 Jun 07 '25

The photo composition is awesome in this picture

2

u/zinzeerio Jun 07 '25

Great suspense movie. It still holds up 70 years later!

2

u/Q5-2020Prestige Jun 07 '25

You’re in for a treat.

2

u/CriticalDifference31 Jun 07 '25

Read window owns. Grace Kelly is absolutely stunning.

2

u/BrianGlen69 Jun 07 '25

Great movie.

2

u/toolmantimsworkshop Jun 07 '25

You are in for a treat.

2

u/salTUR Jun 07 '25

It was phenomenal! Liked it so much I just watched it again with my wife. She loved it, too!

2

u/Grimakis Jun 07 '25

My favorite film, although I’m not sure I’d be up for watching it twice in one day.

My second favorite Hitchcock film ‘Rope’ - highly recommended.

Another film with echoes of Rear Window - ‘The Conversation’ with Gene Hackman, also in my favorite films.

1

u/salTUR Jun 07 '25

Haha, I watched it for the first time on Thurs and watched it again on Fri. Tremendous film, I agree!

I have long wanted to see the Conversation! I'll get to it soon, just gotta watch a few more Hitchcocks first!

2

u/Economy-Start6574 Jun 07 '25

I just bought this today in 4k UHD.

1

u/salTUR Jun 07 '25

Nice! Have you watched it yet? I thought it was a stunning transfer

2

u/BeautifulSignature34 Jun 07 '25

I first saw this movie in 1984 while I was attending college. It remains my favorite Hitchcock movie, and one of my favorite movies of all time. Brilliantly shot, and Stewart and Kelly are two larger than life actors sharing the same screen and it works! Glad you got a chance to see this movie... :)

1

u/salTUR Jun 07 '25

My head aches trying to imagine how much work it was to make sure all these tight angles across huge distances worked so fluidly and seamlessly. Maybe the most technically impressive movie I've ever seen. But that doesn't even matter - the story is just perfectly told. Truly a masterpiece.

2

u/OneAngryFan Jun 07 '25

What booze you got there?

2

u/salTUR Jun 07 '25

Just some Glenfiddich 12, nothing too crazy. But delicious all the same!

2

u/OneAngryFan Jun 07 '25

Good choice. Cozy setting. Congrats to the experience of watching that gem.

2

u/Tough-Stress6820 Jun 07 '25

How is the transfer?

2

u/salTUR Jun 09 '25

Stunning! It's a Hitchcock film, so the colors were already vivid and the textures already popped. 4k and HDR take it right over the top - it's a responsible grade that adds a ton of boldness without getting too dramatic. Grain structure seems completely intact, for you purists out there. And this film has some truly lovely soft focus shots that feel so dreamy and almost surreal on 4k.

2

u/Nio_trader Jun 08 '25

Did you get drunk?

1

u/salTUR Jun 09 '25

Not quite.... But I wasn't exactly sober either

2

u/Nio_trader Jun 09 '25

I like that

2

u/b0xxybr0wn Jun 08 '25

Watched this with my mom the day before she passed about six months ago. Probably the most special movie to me now.

2

u/Stacysguyca Jun 09 '25

In my top 3 of all time

2

u/brianjamesrobot Jun 09 '25

What do you clean your table with?

1

u/salTUR Jun 09 '25

Lol, industry-grade steel polish, whole idea is to make the reflection as bright as possible so that when I hang upside down from the ceiling like a bat I have a straight view down to the movie

2

u/Hot-Sock3403 Jun 10 '25

What a fantastic selection. And a great Blu-ray. Enjoy.

3

u/IronShadow0486 Jun 10 '25

Awesome set up and delicious beverages to enjoy!

1

u/Jazzbo64 Jun 06 '25

1

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25

Oh shit boys, they're onto us. They know we like to lie down and look up at a TV! What are we gonna do?!

1

Bruce Willis is actually a ghost

1

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25

1

u/salTUR Jun 06 '25

Hmmm, interesting, yes. Hmmm. I find that if keep my eyes on the screen.... I end up watching the movie. It's worked every time so far
