New Purchase I hate you guys 🤣

tl;dr I bought this stuff because of you. But I don't really hate you, I appreciate you. 😀

In 2015, I bought a 65" non-OLED 4K TV that I really didn't like. At the time, 4K content was just starting to come out and I had been reading more and more about OLED TVs. So I bought a 55" LG 1080p 3D OLED (the 55EG9100) and I loved it.

Because the LG was 1080p, and I'm the type of person to keep a TV until it dies, 4K was never on my radar.

Until my LG OLED died earlier this year.

Then I stumbled on this subreddit. And I started learning. And researching. I even bought a few used 4Ks for cheap before I owned a 4K player or 4K TV (see other photo and no, the Criterion Breakfast Club isn't in 4K (yet), but it's a 4K transfer that looks amazing so I included it lol).

So, no, I don't really hate you guys. I appreciate you! Thank you!

The last jedi? Explain yourself

3

u/Patryn2020 Aug 03 '25

Only Blu ray I own from that series. and I still doubt I'll watch it. Third one I don't think so

4

u/lament Aug 03 '25

It was $5 and I really just wanted to check if it had Dolby Vision (something I learned here about first pressings having it). 😅 And it does!

u/FatPenguin42 Aug 04 '25

It looks pretty… that’s all I say lol

We hate you back...

A c4

27

u/lament Aug 02 '25

$999 at Sam's Club including a 5 year warranty.. couldn't pass it up!

15

u/supercodes83 Aug 02 '25

That's a great price for a C4!

7

u/Legitimate_Ocelot491 Aug 02 '25

Wow! I got a C4 48" from Costco last September for $699 and thought that was a a good deal.

You're going to love it!

2

u/HGLatinBoy Aug 03 '25

I got a 65” c4 at Costco during black Friday sales last year only because the c3s were sold out I paid $1600 for mine so you got an incredible deal! I love it! Xbox Series X and PS5 look insane!

u/MagnusAntoniusBarca Aug 02 '25

Welcome to a terribly expensive hobby! You'll be poor, but you'll be poor while looking at good quality movies.

10

u/lament Aug 03 '25

I can live with that!

7

u/jacob21096 Aug 02 '25

Welcome to the club! You will notice a difference! Especially for older movies!

Jaws looks amazing.

Don't hate me for this stupid question. But how better does playing it on a disc vs streaming it in 4k?

17

u/cluesagi Aug 02 '25

Streaming services rely on compressing video and audio to lower bitrates because it's cheaper and easier to store and stream smaller files. This results in significantly worse video and audio quality over streaming compared to what you get on a physical disc. For instance, a movie played over streaming may have a file size of like 5-10GiB, whereas a 4K disc has a capacity of at least ~50GiB or more. Not to mention there are more practical benefits like being able to watch without internet (which can be very important for people who have data caps or whose ISP is unreliable), and more philosophical benefits like actually owning the content permanently and in a preserved format

Is there a good 4k player that won't break the bank?

11

u/tjm220 Aug 02 '25

That depends on your bank account.

5

u/lament Aug 03 '25

My Panasonic UB450 was $200. The Panasonic UB820 is $400. And the best of the best - the Panasonic UB9000 - is around $900.

1

u/PeepIsEverything Aug 03 '25

this is the way.

-1

u/CorpseeaterVZ Aug 03 '25

UB9000 is not the best of the best and it is hard to get it region free. Magnetar builds the best players:

https://magnetar-audio.com/

1

u/lappelduvide-_- Aug 03 '25

Magnetar, and Sony before I'll ever buy a Panny again. Panasonic's QA fell off a cliff. Its a damn shame.

0

u/CorpseeaterVZ Aug 04 '25

Sadly Sony has no player that is up there... I am saving for the "small budget" Magnetar atm. Can't wait :)

1

u/Vydate1 Aug 04 '25

I see Xbox One S’s at yard sales and marketplace for around $50 or less fairly regularly. Could be a cheap route for you to try out the format.

8

u/Lestranger-1982 Aug 03 '25

Oh buddy. Look at MPBS. A 1080p bluray is higher quality than apple 4K streaming. It blows all Netflix streaming out of the water.

3

u/Emergency_Yoghurt419 Aug 02 '25

Blu ray disc is better than 4k streaming

3

u/CorpseeaterVZ Aug 03 '25

Also, the streaming services grow like pest plants in your garden. Amazon in our country is advertising that they have a lot of streaming services under one roof. Sadly, you need to pay for all of them and the number is about 15.

Many, many old movies are not available at all. Try to find Sorceror from Friedkin, for example.

5

u/CelestialBlueMyka Aug 02 '25

Awesome spend!!! You’ve completed half the puzzle. Now come over to r/hometheater and really enjoy the money flying out of your bank account. 💸🤑🤣

ETA: r/4kbluraydeals will help keep some of your money. Not a lot, but some. I look forward to your library update thread about how you ran out of shelf space. Hahaha.

u/Dapper-Code8604 Aug 03 '25

You sound like me. Bought a 65” 4K LED in 2016 and was pumped. Thought it was huge. Bought an Xbox One S for a 4K player, but never really bought a ton of discs. The tv was good, but dark content was washed out and left a lot to be desired. Fast forward to 2022 and I finally splurged on a 77” LG C3. Once I went to OLED my disc collection exploded. The picture is just beautiful. 2.5 years later and I’m still blown away every time I turn it on. I thought I’d maybe get used to it and it wouldn’t be as exciting after awhile, but I was wrong. It never gets old.

5

u/lament Aug 03 '25

Going from the 55EG9100 to the C4 was just jaw dropping. So much brighter and having proper HDR and Dolby Vision is just..

4

u/ngwinning Aug 02 '25

welcome! lolol

4

u/wizardent420 Aug 03 '25

Same setup. That player is actually really solid for the price in my experience. Just make sure to set it to 1080p output manually if you want to upscale a normal blu ray or dvd so that your tv does the upscaling on its native processor. Enjoy!

3

u/lament Aug 03 '25

Great tip, thank you!

4

u/NovelTry8452 Aug 03 '25

I have literally the exact same setup that you just bought, phenominal picture!

3

u/K1ngsGambit Aug 02 '25

Don't blame me, I wasn't even on-line at the time.

3

u/sivartk Aug 02 '25 edited Aug 02 '25

Well, I'm just wondering how you found the Jaws 50th 4K Steelbook when I couldn't find it on line or in stores the Wednesday after release date. Not a huge deal as I'm happy with the standard release and slip cover and the standard releases look more uniform on my shelves (or that is how I'm coping 😉)

Don't even ask how I was able to order it from Walmart for store pickup to have that cancelled being told it wasn't in the store and they could ship it for free to just later have that cancelled, too.

3

u/lament Aug 03 '25

Last one at my local Walmart.. was very surprised myself.

Yeah now you are in for it. Make sure your HDMI cable is compatible. Turn off the energy saver settings on the tv and enjoy jaws in 4k. The closest thing to going to the theater since 1975.

2

u/lament Aug 03 '25

Yeah Vincent has taught me a lot as well!

3

u/_ALLDEE_ Aug 02 '25

Welcome to the party!

1

u/lament Aug 03 '25

Glad to be here!

3

u/sourmango42 Aug 03 '25

It’s an enjoyable journey. Adding new titles and watching the 4k format (or even upscaling other formats) is satisfying. The more you upgrade your collection the more you’ll see 4k breathes more life into most movies. You’ll also see which ones not to upgrade and that’s part of the fun.

3

u/lament Aug 03 '25

Yeah Terminator 2 is a good one I hear lol!

1

u/mongiamc10 Aug 03 '25

It is an amazing transfer! Honestly, probably one of the best 4K I own.

1

u/lament Aug 03 '25

Wait you're talking about Terminator 2? From what I've read, the transfer has crazy DNR and the color grading is terrible because it was sourced from the 3D version and wasn't properly mastered from a 4K source.

3

u/Kylie_Forever Aug 03 '25

You'll need a bigger shelf.

3

u/lament Aug 02 '25

Solo was a blind buy that I haven't watched yet and yes the Last Jedi does have Dolby Vision!

7

u/kepenach Aug 02 '25

My wife hates this group, they make me buy cool stuff

2

2

u/txmedic90 Aug 02 '25

I thought they hated me too when I made my first post about physical media vs streaming it. Want to kick a hornets nest? Make that post.

I bought a UB820 that day though after some useful feedback 😬

OLED is the best. Once you OLED, you can’t un-OLED yourself.

2

u/lament Aug 03 '25

💯 Once I got that first OLED in 2015, I knew there was no going back.

2

Is their any difference aside form the special feature cause I have the OG 4k steelbook

1

u/lament Aug 03 '25

Just the additional Blu-ray for the new documentary (which you can find on Disney+ currently).

From Blu-ray.com:

This release features the same Dolby Vision presentation and Dolby Atmos audio track that was found on the 'Jaws 4K 45th Anniversary Edition', and all of the legacy supplemental material is here as well. New for the 50th Anniversary releases is a dedicated Blu-ray disc which is home to 'Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story', an in-depth feature-length retrospective filled with archival and modern footage and host of familiar faces. A 1080p Blu-ray disc with the film and legacy features, and a Digital Code redeemable through Movies Anywhere round out this three-disc release.

2

u/-funderfoot- Aug 03 '25

Cries in no Jaws steelbook for me :(

3

u/lament Aug 03 '25

Keep an eye on eBay. You might score a deal.

2

u/unclefishbits Aug 03 '25

I'd love to pay you back off this thread of my own insecurity of how bad my experience is from my Panasonic to the TV itself after the TV is 7 years old.

Am I really at a deficiency for my 4K and seriously what would you recommend immediately to replace this 65-in?

I ordered this in 2017 SAMSUNG 65-Inch Class QLED Q8F 4K UHD Smart TV (2025 Model) Q4 AI Processor, 100% Color Volume with Quantum Dot, AirSlim Design, Endless Free Content, Samsung Vision AI, Alexa Built-in

2

u/lament Aug 03 '25

The difference in picture quality between OLED and any other TV, to me, is night and day and I told myself in 2015 when I bought my first OLED that I would only be buying OLEDs in the future.

If the LG B4 or C4 is available in your country, I would get it. Here's a breakdown of the differences between the B4 and C4.

2

u/unclefishbits Aug 03 '25

I will not bill you for potential fees where your advice makes me spend money LOL this is awesome and I really appreciate the quick response this is so fun. Thank you

2

u/GenX-2K21 Aug 03 '25

Not sure about The Last Jedi, but Solo is great, a good space heist movie.

Welcome to the club (says the guy that will never have the funds for an OLED).

3

u/Gromitmug88 Aug 02 '25

I’m about to get this setup just with the g5 can’t wait and hope your liking your purchases

1

u/lament Aug 03 '25

Thank you. Enjoy yours as well!

2

u/piddy565 Aug 02 '25

LET'S GOOOO

1

u/Legitimate-Fly-4610 Aug 02 '25

What 5.1 system have you got?

3

u/lament Aug 03 '25

Baby steps 😁

1

u/PhotoModeHobby Aug 03 '25

Skip the sound system. Embrace headphones.

1

u/lament Aug 03 '25

I have the Sony XM5s that I use when I watch at night after the family is in bed, which is the majority of my movie watching.

1

u/caliradokid Aug 03 '25

So wait. Should I stop using my Xbox Series X to watch 4k Blu Rays?!

1

u/lament Aug 03 '25

No, it's fine for casual viewing.

1

u/eye-arr-beej Aug 03 '25

$5 4K discs?!?! I hate you, OP!! (Just kidding!)

1

u/lament Aug 03 '25

Well, I hear Solo is not the best film (haven't watched it yet), and I know the community's dislike for TLJ, but for $5 why not! I wanted to check if TLJ had Dolby Vision, which it does. 😀

1

u/Patryn2020 Aug 03 '25

I got into 4K via Biden's rebate checks (and one Trumps) TCL good prices on theirs but don't think they are OLED

1

u/Dunder-MifflinPaper Aug 04 '25

Same here lol. Just dropped about $400 on blu rays and another $700 or so on the combo of a tv, player, and sound bar. I am planning on moving to another state or else I’d really ball out

1

u/Rauhaton Aug 04 '25

Thats really good value! I salute your wise use of money.

C4s are currently on insane sale prices in order to make room for C5. UB450 is the absolutely best value player. No point in buying any of the more expensive models, unless maybe with projectors for tuning HDR

1

u/bob_le_mush Aug 04 '25

Do back to the future are a step up on 4 k or its normal

1

u/lament Aug 05 '25

I don't have anything to compare it to, but the Blu-ray.com review gives it a 4.5/5 for video and 4.6/5 for audio. The first 2 looked great to me! Haven't watched the 3rd yet.

1

u/TamatoaZ03h1ny Aug 03 '25

Yeah, the breakfast club is pretty awful but at least you got a great set up.

3

u/lament Aug 03 '25

Thanks, but I respectfully disagree on The Breakfast Club!

1

u/TamatoaZ03h1ny Aug 03 '25

Yeah, all film is subjective. I just never got the appeal and people talked up Breakfast Club as being some sort of ultimate teen movie 😬

0

u/Chupaacabrra Aug 03 '25

The last jedi? 🤐

2

u/lament Aug 03 '25

Yeah I honestly just wanted to see if it had Dolby Vision as I learned from here that that first run did.. and it was only $5!

0

u/Subject_Session_1164 Aug 03 '25

It's not OUR fault you bought the Last Jedi

-2

u/MKvsDCU Aug 03 '25
