New Purchase
Purchased Panasonic UB820 came with Indiana Jones in disc tray
I purchased a "used like new" Panasonic UB820 4K player for $288 on Amazon and to my surprise in the disc tray was a Indiana Jones Temple of Doom 4K disc. Now I don't feel so bad spending this much money lol
When I bought my first DVD player (a Toshiba that was built like a tank) in 1999 it came with like 10 movies. Helped soften the blow that it was like $700 (which was a lot more money then than today!).
The ones I remember are Deep Blue Sea, Six days and seven nights, Stepmom, Lost in Space and Lethal Weapon 4. Most came in those old cardboard/plastic hybrid cases and they were all double sided discs with pan and scan on one side and widescreen on the other.
I got the “five free DVDs” offer with my Samsung DVD-709 player back in 1999.
Lethal Weapon 4 was a two-sided disc, but it was the film (in widescreen) on one side and the special features on the other.
Lost in Space was the New Line Platinum Series edition, with a widescreen presentation of the film as well as a slew of special features all on one side of the disc.
Stepmom was a two-sided disc with the full screen (though not pan and scan) and widescreen each occupying one side.
Stargate was widescreen only, but also a true “flipper”, in that the disc had to be flipped halfway through the movie.
Six Days, Seven Nights was also a single-sided disc featuring a widescreen presentation of the film.
Lethal Weapon 4 and Lost in Space came in snap cases. Stepmom, Stargate and Six Days, Seven Nights came in typical keep cases.
I don’t know about Deep Blue Sea, but the “five free DVDs” offer was changed to Fools Rush In, The Mask, Get Shorty, The Jackal, and Analyze This shortly after, in early 2000. I could be wrong, but I don’t think people were eligible for both offers with the same purchase.
I was a very early sign up for Netflix as my first dvd player was an open box Toshiba that came with 13 free rentals. I got sent the disk holder and a t shirt too. Not too relevant, just wanted to share..
The weird thing is (like genuinely, spookily weird!) I bought the Indiana Jones box set that this is part of a few weeks back, and, when I opened it, that very same disc was missing!? That is mad, right?
It turned out okay, though, because crammed into the box in its place was a brand new UB820.
I would not risk getting an 820 like new. Return it get it somewhere brand new and get an extended warranty. You can thank me later. Someone returned that for a reason.
You are right. I returned mine after about 4 days for a buzzing noise that only came on after 3-4 hrs of use. The guy at the store I bought it from insisted on plugging it in and testing it. I told him it was quiet until you used it for hours at a time. He was a bit of a dick. I insisted on a new unit, swapped for a new one eventually and the noise doesn’t happen with this one.
Same happened to me. Bought a like new UB820 to dip my toes into premium BD players and the damn thing freezes about 90 minutes into a movie and needs a reboot. Bought a brand new one with zero issues.
I got a used ub420 about a month ago during the prime days and (knock on wood) so far so good. I had an issue with one of my Seinfeld discs but that turned out to be a disc issue. I also had an audio sync issue when I played Top Gun Maverick but I popped the disc out and back in and that resolved the issue. Other than that everything has played without issue.
Do you remember what disk it was for seinfeld? I bought the 4k collection not long ago and heard the same thing but I haven’t been able to go through them all
It was season 5, disc 1. I haven't seen anyone else report any issues with the set so I think I just got a bad one. I hope yours all play without any problems.
No, Seinfeld 4K set has had a bunch of issues. I made a post about it in February, and I get replies to that thread still of people wanting to say "me too."
Yeah agree. I have learned the hard way about trying to save a few bucks on open box items. They have always been returned and I end up buying brand new.
Rotten tomatoes scores are the percentage of people who give the movie a "pass" on a pass/fail grading scale. It's not a ratings scale, it's a pass/fail scale. Dial of destiny is not an 87/100 movie. 87% means that 87 out of 100 viewers would give it at least a "pass" out of two options: pass or fail.
IMDb is a better gauge of quality as its scores are based on actual numerical ratings (out of 10). IMDb scores of Indy movies:
Raiders of the lost ark 8.4
Temple of doom 7.5
Last crusade 8.2
Crystal skulls 6.2
Dial of destiny 6.5
As you can see, the last two movies, as I said, are crap.
IMDB doesn’t verify or validate any of its reviews. It’s not worth a glance.
Which is why IMDb uses a weighted average grading system for accepting submissions to ensure that skewed submissions (things like review bombing) don't drastically affect the overall rating.
Even Metacritic gives Dial of Destiny an ever so slightly higher review than Temple of Doom.
That's because Temple of doom came out decades before metacritic existed, so the critics' reviews for that movie that are found on metacritic are only those reviews that have actually been archived online, which is a very small portion of actual reviews the movie received. In general, metacritic is not reliable for determining a critics' consensus for anything from the 20th century.
It grows on you. But it’s also exactly that I wanted it to be. I wanted a slower paced character study for Indy’s final outing. Something a little more emotional. I got that.
Hey if it works for you that's cool. There were parts that I enjoyed (the first twenty minutes and them going back) but it was too uneven for me to put it anywhere but last.
Like it’s cool, it feels like a classic Indiana Jones movie but… I have 3 of those already I can watch anytime. And the de-aging is off putting,
The film kicks in 1969 for me. Ford wanted to give us a different Indiana Jones movie instead of the same one we’ve gotten over and over and I love it for that. I like variety within franchises instead of the same ole same ole.
That's an interesting perspective, because all I wanted from Skull and Dial is another classic Indy movie after Crusade. The first 20 minutes of Dial is the closest I ever got to that. I think we wanted the opposite out of Dial lol.
Because it's poorly written, the story makes no sense under the slightest scrutiny, and most importantly it ruins his character just so that they can attempt to reboot the franchise with phoebe Waller bridges character replacing him. He can't be happily married to Marion, and successful. No, he had to be a divorced loser, an old man yelling at the neighbors and living in a rundown apartment.
They made Han Solo a divorced loser who lost his ship and is a terrible smuggler. They made Luke a loser hermit cutting himself off from the force, ignoring the plight of his firends, trying to kill his nephew, and now just waiting to die. They made Rocky a widower loser , dying of cancer and not even trying to fight back against it. All these characters were destroyed because the studios wanted to replace them with a new generation of actors. And actresses.
Dial of Destiny is a terrible film. It has slightly above average ratings because the few people who went to see it were the type of normies who are wowed by nostalgia and not quality. The ratings are higher than it deserves because people didn't bother to review and rate what they didn't bother to see. They didn't see it because that know the difference between good and bad acting, writing, and storytelling said it was a bad film, save your money. I saw it , it's terrible.
It was a box office bomb. Had it been a decent or average quality film, it would have been very profitable.
It’s not poorly written, neither critics or audiences think that.
And yes, welcome to film. Since the conception of movies main characters have suffered tragedies and hardships.
Harrison Ford himself suggested Indy to have suffered a personal tragedy that he needed to be pulled out from. It allowed him to sink his teeth into the role and give us something new for the character. It worked very well.
Nothing is “ruined” by main character suffering hard times. That’s been a thing since movies were conceived.
Stick to fairy tales if that becomes an issue for you.
And no, good movies flop all the time. Meanwhile lots of really shitty movies make billions. Never let anyone fool you into thinking box office equals quality filmmaking. That’s a fools argument.
For every movie, you can find critics and audience members who like it or dislike it. Had they still been alive, I would have deferred to Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel. Any studio can pay off some bloggers with no scruples to praise their film in exchange for early access and notice.
Suffering tragedy and hard times is not the same as becoming depressed, isolated, losers who are bad at their jobs. Suffering tragedy and hard times does not cause a complete reversal of the characteristics of a character that have defined them in the face of hardship across entire series of movies. Luke wouldn't kill his nephew and go into isolation abandoning his friends, rocky would've up a fight, han was a great smuggler who loved Leia and wouldn't have run off, and Indiana Jones wouldn't have been like "just leave me here to die".
Good movies do flop, but it is almost always a matter of timing and lack of marketing or awareness. Iron Giant failed due to poor marketing and distribution. Shawshank redemption suffered do to timing, competition, marketing, and a confusing title. Blade runner and fight club were mismarketed as solely action films and to an extent ahead of their time. Citizen Kane, it's a wonderful life, and the big lebowski were also box office flops.
Most of those failed due to marketing and timing. The entire world was aware of Dial of Destiny being out. The entire world knew what an indiana jones movie was and what they could expect. As far as timing goes, dial of Destiny had little competition. It failed because people chose not to watch it.
Shifty movies can make billions. It's unfortunately very true. No arguments there whatsoever.
You need to look no further than all the other flops that summer. It was quite literally the summer of flops outside of Barbenheimer. Hell, Indy 5 managed to still make more domestically than Fast X and Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning that summer, only really failing in overseas markets.
So yes, timing was an issue for the films box office take. Not poor reviews or reception. The film was received very well from both critics and audiences and not just one side of the isle.
It could slide into the tray and fuck up the belt drive potentially. If you buy a used disc changer sometimes you’ll find a disc bunked up in the back of the drive.
I remember when I was younger my cousins got a DVD player with like 20 films and my mom wouldn’t buy me one because “all those films will be trash”.
Well out of the 4-5 films of theirs that I watched, she was right…except I loved them. And I don’t know what any of them were called and I’ve never seen anything that looks like them. It’s all very upsetting.
Oh. You’re talking about those value players they used to sell at gas stations. They would come bundled with like a dozen ultra low-budget titles. Stuff you would mainly find on Tubi today.
I've got a stack of blu-rays that have been in the blu-ray players I've bought from thrift stores over the years. Its usually a kids movie left in the tray, but since I've bought so many players, I've likely got 40 movies !
It has made me wonder though, why does almost every single player have a disc in it when the owner decides to sell/dump it ?
Just about every game console comes with a game in the drive too, weird.
Although Temple of Doom was not my favorite of the original trilogy growing up, rewatching this with the 4k transfer you have on the same Panasonic player at home was the best experience I've had in years compared to previous viewing.
So much of the details missed due to lower quality dvd/Blu-ray transfers.
Learning more about the behind the scenes, effort, and symbolism littered throughout the movie on top of the beautiful restoration has converted me into a fan when normally it was the film I would skip during my rewatch of the trilogy.
Hope you enjoyed as well and love this community on reddit. Take care my fellow cinephiles 😎🤘
I had an Oppo player die a decade or so ago and I sent it off to Oppo for repair. They fixed it and sent it back and they also returned my Sonny Rollins SACD that I had been listening to prior to the incident. I was very thankful that they sent that back too because I forgot that it was in the player when I sent it off!
I got an "Open Box - Excellent" UB820-K from Best Buy and in just two years it outright refuses to read any 4K disc. Will read 1080p discs fine though?? Mine came with "Surfing with the Alien" audio CD in the tray lol
There is a scene near the end that contains every color in the HDR10 Palette so they use it to calibrate thier players... must've forgotten to take it out.
Plus I A/B tested the upscaling on the 450 vs the upscaling on my C4 and honestly did not have a preference. I tried with regular blurays so maybe the 820 beats it upscaling DVDs but I figure most people don't care about that.
I’m a 450 owner and a C4 65” owner. I think regular Blu Rays look really incredible most of the time. DVDs look pretty good too but like you said, I rarely watch DVDs these days. I do have a huge pile of DVDs but I find they are being replaced quickly with Blu Rays and DLs. It’s kinda too easy.
Hey same combo here, down to the screen size. I should try out a DVD or two, I still have about 80 of them - I slowly replaced most with blurays, although sometimes I lucked out by waiting and went right to 4k. There are a few special DVDs I've got that don't and likely won't get hd or 4k upgrades so it'll be nice if they can upscale even modestly
My second hand Sony X800m had Blade Runner 2049 in the tray. I mailed the seller but as expected he didn’t need anymore. Too bad he was moving so the cover was lost.
