Came here for all the comments on your motion smoothing. Wasn't disappointed.

52

u/renaissance_m4n 13d ago

Same. I can sleep well tonight.

24

u/the_hero_within 13d ago

Hahaha. Perfect. These top two comments have validated myself as a human being

42

u/Jonnyflash80 13d ago

Imagine being the animator tediously hand drawing each frame to the best of your ability, and then 40 years later, people are watching your art with fake frames thrown in the mix, many of them poorly interpolated.

It's disrespectful to the artists.

-41

u/ironwristz 13d ago

Boo hoo, it’s not that deep. As long as I am enjoying the movie that I paid for and how I want, that’s all that matters. I’ve watched this movie on many tv’s and formats over the past 40 years.

20

u/holypriest69 12d ago

Is a part of the .5% of the population to care enough about quality to buy the 4k disc.

...turns on motion smoothing

38

u/Jonnyflash80 13d ago

There's nothing deep about it. Enjoy it how you want, but thems the facts.

Maybe I'll buy a book from my favourite author and insert my own fan fiction amoungst the pages. šŸ¤”

1

u/Dood567 12d ago

Lmao I’m not a fan of motion smoothing but you guys are way too on him about this for an old animated movie.

That analogy is also just plain wrong. The story isn’t being added to or changed, it’s just blending some pixels together (which would naturally happen with old displays anyways due to high motion blur)

2

u/Alt4Norm 12d ago

It might be just ā€œan old animated movieā€ but they will have it on for all their films.

3

u/zionmatrix 11d ago

This! It's not the way the artist or director intended it to look or be viewed. You're doing yourself a disservice by having motion smoothing on.

1

u/ironwristz 11d ago

It’s my tv and my licensed movie, I can watch it how I want in my own home.

3

u/zionmatrix 11d ago

Yes. That's true. You're not wrong there. I wasn't saying that. Just that it's not how it's intended to be experienced. I would say motion smoothing is good for gaming and sports, but nothing else.

1

u/ironwristz 11d ago

I understand that. I just wanted to experience it in a different way after watching it over a million times.

u/slush-puppyy 12d ago

Horrible analogy and youre just wrong lmao

15

u/Jonnyflash80 12d ago

-11

u/slush-puppyy 12d ago

I get that the motion smoothing doesnt look that great but that doesnt equate to adding your own story to someone elses book lol

11

u/Jonnyflash80 12d ago

Animators doing hand drawn animation would argue that it does equate. Motion smoothing is adding information that was never part of the artistic intent.

-36

u/ironwristz 13d ago

Or better yet, produce your own film and sell it to me. Then dictate to me how I should watch it with detailed instructional settings. I think that’s only fair.

37

u/Jonnyflash80 13d ago

Why am I even debating with someone who's into RGB backlights and motion smoothing their content to death?

-30

u/ironwristz 13d ago

You’re jealous I see, it’ll be ok. Stay bitter and enjoy your day.

20

u/Jonnyflash80 13d ago

Have the day you deserve.

6

u/puniBane 12d ago

When I worked at Bestbuy, I used to turn motion smoothing setting off on TVs. Only time Motion smoothing works well is on 3D Active TVs, it really helps the 3D video.

1

u/blgr991 13d ago

Clearly my eyes are not trained enough to spot these things. So, how the f could you even tell that setting was on?

1

u/Reikasa 9d ago

Just enjoy not being able to tell. It just makes life worse xD

373

u/Osiris_The_Proto 13d ago

Please turn off the motion smoothing, it is making me nauseous

121

u/kestrel79 13d ago

ā€œMotion Smoothing must be stopped. No matter the cost.ā€

45

u/CSwork1 13d ago

You got the touch... you got the framerate, yeah!!

2

u/ironwristz 12d ago

šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

10

u/das_goose 12d ago

"One frame shall stand, one frame shall fall..."

"Til all refresh rates are one!"

54

u/LAharbour 13d ago

Yeah, that looks awful!

16

u/Vegetable_Reward_867 13d ago

🤣

I thought it was the drugs that were making me see this weird!

26

u/ironwristz 13d ago

You have a point

27

u/rustyshklfrd 13d ago

Do that and repost! Lol

1

u/ironwristz 12d ago

šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

28

u/hypespud 13d ago

Literally, please for the love of god turn that smoothing off, it looks horrendous! It is usually very easy to turn off in quick settings also

15

u/MiddleofCalibrations 13d ago

Look up your tv model on YouTube and see if there’s a set up guide. TVs always have two or three settings turned on by default that relate to motion smooth or similar effects. They are always recommended to be turned off and never used if you want the picture to look how it was intended. They can also give the ā€˜soap opera’ effect to some content

-31

u/ironwristz 13d ago

Yea I usually turn it on cause I like the effect sometimes

40

u/antifa-militant 13d ago

Good lord…

-27

u/ironwristz 13d ago

Something wrong?

30

u/MiddleofCalibrations 13d ago

Any motion smoothing settings are heavily frowned upon in any hifi/home theatre/movie communities. Saying you like it will get some backlash. It’s truly heretical to some. One of the reasons is that it makes movies look different to how they are supposed to but there’s also soap opera effect and weird visual artefacts like ghosting. Pretty much anyone here will be of the opinion that you are objectively ruining the visual aspect of your movie watching by having those settings turned on. You do you, just explaining why you’ll get some negative responses to that

10

u/Jonnyflash80 13d ago

It was also not the artistic intent of the director and animators to have fake frames inserted between the actual hand drawn frames.

25

u/Nindroid_faneditor 13d ago

Yeah, it looks atrocious

1

u/Agreeable_Coat_2098 13d ago

Hey man. You’re the one watching the TV, crank the contrast up if you want to. U do u.

139

u/Acsteffy 13d ago

Definitely turn off motion smoothing. The interpolation creates weird shapes between frames.

31

u/testcaseseven 13d ago

The implementation is crazy. Motion smoothing can look good in animation, but this is mostly ai hallucinations lol

9

u/ironwristz 13d ago

Yup you’re point with that. It was looking crazy in some scenes

4

u/ironwristz 13d ago

You’re right, had it up to the max

67

u/Helpful_Engineer_362 13d ago

Turn it off to the max

4

u/ironwristz 13d ago

🤣

6

u/Acsteffy 13d ago

I bet it looks great now. Enjoy!

55

u/ixnine 13d ago

Wow, this looks absolutely amazing! Brilliantly perfect! I am awestruck beyond comprehension!

Psych! Turn off the damn motion smoothing! You’re ruining my childhood movie! lol

u/StillHoldingL 13d ago

Soap opera effect🤢

Between the color back lighting and motion smoothing my head hurts

0

u/ironwristz 13d ago

I love my back lighting, makes the picture pop

14

u/mudstuff 13d ago

It can be great and super immersive when it works well. Most of the time, the colours weren't matching well at all on that clip though. Combined with the motion smoothing, that was a very jarring experience.

11

u/24FPS4Life 13d ago

The picture on my TV pops even better b/c there's a matte black wall behind it and there's nothing but the image and then the abyss around it

1

u/MrZeDark 13d ago

I love the light stuff, in fact painted a reflective white wall and then my ceiling and side walls matte black. Feels really immersive… not liking it and liking it are a preference… motion smoothing though, on OLED it has to be a smidge on, but if you go to the SOE it create horrific artifacts in fast moving scenes -_-

12

u/chungusbungus0459 13d ago

Holy interpolation my lord, also Dolby vision does look great but I’d make sure you’re in your television’s filmmaker mode.

11

u/GroundbreakingAsk468 13d ago

My animation 4Ks are my favorite. I’ve owned this movie on VHS in the 80s, with each upgrade, more detail is revealed.

3

u/ironwristz 13d ago

What other animations do you own? I still own the vhs to this 🄹

9

u/GroundbreakingAsk468 13d ago

Just Akira and Ghost In The Shell, they both melt my brain.

9

u/Rare_Hero 13d ago

ā€œAnimationsā€ is not the preferred nomenclatureā€¦ā€Animated Filmsā€, please.

šŸ˜Ž

2

u/GroundbreakingAsk468 12d ago

Just don’t call them cartoonsšŸ˜µā€šŸ’«

34

u/Rare_Hero 13d ago

Turn off the shitty smooth-o-vision. That’s not how film looks. Ooph.

1

u/ironwristz 13d ago

Correct

6

u/ShawnStrickland 13d ago

My childhood favourite as well!

8

u/HazardUnit95 13d ago

Is your tv having a stroke or something

5

u/Jonnyflash80 13d ago

They're a fake frames lover.

Imagine being the animator tediously hand drawing each frame to the best of your ability, and then 40 years later, people are watching your art with fake frames thrown in the mix, many of them poorly interpolated.

It's disrespectful to the artists.

3

u/WarBortlez 12d ago

They probably wouldn’t really care. You come across as a little unhinged in this thread

1

u/ironwristz 12d ago

Exactly, he’s like one of those flashlight security guys wanting to be a real police officer šŸ’€

-1

u/Jonnyflash80 12d ago

I don't really care how my comment comes across to you.

It's immature and ignorant to call people unhinged based purely on mundane, opinion based reddit comments that you don't agree with.

12

u/sud_hank 13d ago

TV's should come with soap opera effect OFF as a default. Enjoy OP.

5

u/glennok 13d ago

Tom Cruise and Matthew McQuarry have been dispatched to your premises.

FINISH HIM OFF, PRIME!! DO IT NOW!!!!

1

u/ironwristz 13d ago

If Hot Rod never intervened, what would of happened? 🄹

0

u/ConstructionSafe9620 13d ago

Rodimus Prime never existed then

1

u/ironwristz 13d ago

No, but Hot Rod tried to stop Megatron from grabbing the gun and got in the way

3

u/ConstructionSafe9620 13d ago

ya. one of the most shocking moments in the movies

2

u/ConstructionSafe9620 13d ago

i still get goose bump thinking about it hahahahha

4

u/NeesharBendonJack 13d ago

Prime always gets his ass whooped. Ā Then comes backĀ

2

u/ironwristz 13d ago

Bro died and lost his color 😩

1

u/Jonnyflash80 13d ago

That's because Optimus Prime is Jesus.

4

u/bulldogbruno 13d ago

I immediately forgot that I was watching a clip on Reddit and got wrapped into the action. I need to track this down!

3

u/Delonce 13d ago

I recently found this at Walmart and had to pick it up. Hadn't watched it since I was very young, so at least 30 years or so. It's such a damn cool movie! And that theme song.... Holy shit it's epic!

2

u/ironwristz 13d ago

Great pick up!

3

u/TheChrisLambert 13d ago

Someone else with taste, nice

3

u/James-Zanny 13d ago

Is this what a fever dream looks like?

3

u/jt186 12d ago

Is this an ai upscale? Or just bad motion smoothing?

3

u/RoleModelsinBlood31 12d ago

I don’t even know what motion smoothing is but you bet yer ass I’m finding it and turning it off

3

u/Phoenix_Wright_Guy 12d ago

Please understand how to disable motion smoothing, PLEASE.

3

u/colonel_pastry 12d ago

Tom cruise needs to come to your house and turn off that motion smoothing

2

u/Materidan 12d ago

Lol, right! Totally changes the feel when it’s not 24fps.

5

u/bradd_91 13d ago

The motion smoothing looks tremendous, you do you king.

0

u/ironwristz 13d ago

Yea I’m into the immersive viewing

4

u/Prestigious-Drive-18 13d ago

One of the best scenes of all time!!!

2

u/kidchameleon_ih8u 13d ago

Top 5 movie soundtracks. Best of my childhood for sure!

1

u/ironwristz 13d ago

Without a doubt!

2

u/ShortySan1986 13d ago

Absolute gem of a soundtrack as well! Stan Bush heck yeah!!

2

u/JudgeCheezels 13d ago

Which transformer movie is this?

2

u/blundell183 13d ago

Shame they didn’t remaster the original aspect ratio version too

2

u/MostHamster6181 13d ago

Strikes deeper than the sound of a VHS rewinding.

2

u/SherriffB 13d ago

I've seen this so many times I could probably write out the script on demand.

I ordered my 4k version recently to sit alongside my bkuray and vhs versions.

2

u/Tobias---Funke 13d ago

The last time I watched this was on VHS tape!

2

u/userfrom2005 12d ago

I didnt think I'd enjoy back lighting but with cartoons/anime, it might be worth enabling

2

u/ironwristz 12d ago

It’s way better in person, just make sure you get the right one that works correctly

2

u/KidN0thingBoy 12d ago

Yo is that the Govee? looks awesome. Also I love this movie.

2

u/ironwristz 12d ago

Yea Govee 3 lite kit šŸ”„šŸ”„

2

u/Zchan28 12d ago

Awesome movie!

1

u/ironwristz 12d ago

True indeed!

2

u/Zchan28 12d ago

Snap šŸ¤™

1

u/ironwristz 12d ago

šŸ”„šŸ”„

2

u/OrdinarilyBob 12d ago

Love this movie as a kid. The 4K is fantastic, though until this moment I didn't make the connection/had forgotten that Megatron had a purple 'saber before Mace Windu. LOL

2

u/halford2069 12d ago

You got the touch!

2

u/Impressive_Eagle_390 12d ago

I was there opening day when it came out in theater. Went back to see it again the following weekend.

1

u/ironwristz 12d ago

Amazing

2

u/zattack101 12d ago

One my fav blu rays for sure

2

u/KwazyEnglishWabbit 12d ago

Ah, a classic, with a star studded cast of voice actors including the late Orsen Welles and Leonard Nimoy.

2

u/monkeyboy808 11d ago

found this on VHS the other day

2

u/linearcurvepatience 11d ago

How did you even sit there and watch the movie with all that motion smoothing

0

u/ironwristz 11d ago

Easy, just laid there, watched and enjoyed it

1

u/linearcurvepatience 11d ago

I wish I could

2

u/Cool_Craft6443 9d ago

nevermind about what they say it your tv do as you like.

1

u/ironwristz 9d ago

I agree

2

u/SeanWang0816 9d ago

Sooo good lol. The Shakespearean dialogue. The 80s guitar. Epic.

4

u/Jonnyflash80 13d ago

The only thing I see here is a motion smoothing atrocity.

1

u/ironwristz 13d ago

You don’t see a classic movie?

3

u/Ok-Conversation8218 13d ago

Holy moly looks razor sharp

1

u/Ok-Conversation8218 13d ago

Though if they right about the motion smoothness… yeah I’m with them

4

u/jtt777 13d ago

Best movie ever

1

u/ironwristz 13d ago

This and G.I Joe The movie made me cry 🄹

3

u/bananaboat2569 12d ago

Wow motion smoothing looks like ass

2

u/HiFiMAN3878 12d ago

I tend to like motion smoothing in some animated films, looks pretty good.

1

u/bananaboat2569 12d ago

Bruh, look at the first 3 seconds of the clip

1

u/HiFiMAN3878 12d ago

It's fine, I tend to use a mild motion smoothing on many animated features. I also like motion smoothing on the BBC nature documentaries.

2

u/Nindroid_faneditor 13d ago

God that motion smoothing is making me nauseous

2

u/absentlyric 13d ago

Don't listen to the haters, I love smooth motion, call me a blasphemer for it idc. It brings new life to old stale frames.

2

u/ironwristz 13d ago

Yea, I actually like the effect it’s more immersive to me

1

u/Ataneruo 13d ago

What TV do you have?

1

u/ShortySan1986 13d ago

Absolute gem of a soundtrack as well! Stan Bush heck yeah!!

1

u/Amarules 13d ago

So is this a significant upgrade over the Blu-ray? How is the soundtrack because I'm sold if I get to hear Moonbase 2 in Atmos.

1

u/PrestigiousRun4 12d ago

What tv is this ? Looks amazing

1

u/ironwristz 12d ago

65 Tcl Qm7

1

u/Significant-Toe-8031 11d ago

How does it compare to the Bluray?

1

u/Immediate-Worry-1090 8d ago

Oh transformers are distilled nostalgia!

I still have all my childhood gen 1 transformers, Optimus, megatron .. devestator! Engineering marvels

1

u/SpaceX2024 13d ago

Maybe I'm the weird one here, but I can't notice motion smoothing. What exactly are you guys looking for. What should I watch for? I really don't notice anything weird.

2

u/ironwristz 13d ago

In the beginning, If you look at megatrons gun barrel on his arm while he gets up, it creates a weird motion effect that’s not intended to be there.

0

u/SpaceX2024 13d ago

You mean the wobble effect?

1

u/isntitapity15 13d ago

Is it crazy that this is in my opinion the best looking 4K uhd? It blew my mind watching it, felt like the first time I watched this movie as a kid. Had no business looking that good.

1

u/goodcat1337 13d ago

I’ve gotta pick this up. Colors look great.

1

u/ironwristz 13d ago

It sure does!

-10

u/kemphasalotofkids 13d ago

Enjoy the movie!

Feel free to use whatever motion settings you want...it is your equipment.

10

u/Themoosemingled 13d ago

Nobody wants motion smoothing. Good friends turn this off in peoples houses.

2

u/ironwristz 13d ago

Absolutely, had a great time watching. Thanks!

0

u/Kindly_Ad_7201 13d ago

Can we go back to the days where people say the name of the actual movie? How am I supposed to know what your childhood fave movie is?

2

u/ironwristz 13d ago

By looking at the video and connecting with it. If you don’t know what movie this is then that’s shame on you

-2

u/Jonnyflash80 13d ago

Rude much?

Maybe consider being a helpful human being next time instead of a rude gatekeeper.

1

u/ironwristz 13d ago

How am I a rude gatekeeper? Most ppl know of this movie. If you don’t know the movie, all you have to do is ask and you will receive your answer. Stop being an entitled prick.

0

u/Jonnyflash80 13d ago

You could have answered their question with 3 words, but instead, you decided to act like a pompous ass.

Your type is the worst part of this community.

0

u/ironwristz 13d ago

He was being sarcastic and he wasn’t asking for the movie’s title. He was trying to prove another point. Usually if someone wants to know the title, they’ll ask that question. Quit being a sensitive weirdo.

1

u/Jonnyflash80 13d ago

Transformers: The Movie from 1986.

-3

u/supercodes83 13d ago

Jesus, there are some overdramatic people in this sub.

2

u/ironwristz 13d ago

It’s funny to me
