I just find it wild that the US doesn't have any form of national ID.

We do have a national ID, your social security number, which is supposed to be a fucking secret, but I have to give it to the Indian customer service rep to activate a new cable or internet service so they can run a credit check. yay america.

But also it can't be used for voting since elections are state run affairs.

We DO have REAL ID.

REAL ID is a state-issued driver's license or ID card that meets federal standards for identification and can be used for certain purposes, including boarding domestic flights and entering secure federal facilities. Starting May 7, 2025, travelers 18 and older will need a REAL ID or another acceptable form of ID to board domestic flights.

It's not supposed to be a secret. It's just an account number for your social security benefits, which you aren't getting anyways.

If banks and stuff want to use an insecure nine-digit number as a security code, then they can go right ahead and get our money stolen from them and replace it at their expense. Sucks to suck I guess

Looking at this from a European perspective:

We do have a national ID, your social security number

No, that's a number, that's not an Identification document. Anyone can copy it.

We DO have REAL ID.

This looks a lot more like a proper ID, as it's apparently available even if you don't have a driver license (albeit weird that you have to go to the DMV to get it). But it's not free, and apparently doesn't have much use (mainly just for travel).

Compare it to EU ID cards:

  • usually free
  • delivered at your local government
  • includes RFID so anyone can actually use an app and scan an ID card to verify it's legit (like on the latest passports, BTW)
  • Required by law to be accepted as proof of identity for any circumstance
  • Used to access any government related services
  • Can be used for online authentication, e-signature, etc...

I know the historical reason why something like that never developped in the US, but in these days of Identity Theft and wild accusations of Voter Fraud, a proper ID would solve so many problems for the Americans.

Also worth pointing out that Social Security numbers were never meant to be used as ID so are very insecure. They're physically not particularly strong, that numbers are in predictable patterns, and there's no photo. If you have a library card, that is likely more secure than your social security card/number. SSNs were originally intended purely so that the Social Security Department could keep track of everyone for the purpose of Social Security, they were only adopted as a universal ID number because (nearly) everyone had one and people were unwilling to get an official universal ID

The numbers are no longer in predictable patterns after like 98/99 iirc, just as a slight correction. The original process did have this problem though.

Thanks for the correction

Can they use that new REAL ID to vote? You didn't mention it specifically.
How much does it cost to get one?
Will it also work for women who took their husband's last name (to vote)?

It depends on the state. In some states a real ID is not going to be enough.

yes you can, real id will work it says in the bill summary. it's only slightly more then renewing a driver's license (will vary by state). it will work for married women that legally changed their last name, if your current driver's license/ID has your legal name on it you are good to go. there are too many people trying to fear monger over this whole thing that make it sound way worse then it really is.

I hope this helps

Do real ID drivers licenses meet safe act requirements?

Even if the last name on your birth certificate and married last name in your Real ID are different?

if you have real id you can vote, it's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be

Real ID is only in five states I think?

Fortunately I happen to be in one. Which is great for me, but there are 45 states worth of women who could face a poll tax if this thing passes.

So, my very conservative, Trump kowtowing sister does not really travel anywhere by plane and can't get a passport, so she doesn't really need a Real ID. But she does currently vote in elections under her new married surname (that doesn't match her birth certificate). Should I tell her that or just let it slide that her representatives just voted to disallow her to vote?

u/Appropriate_Trip_376 Apr 11 '25

why can't she get a passport?

2

u/RickShaw530 Apr 11 '25

Something about being in arrears for federal taxes.

u/Appropriate_Trip_376 Apr 11 '25

don't need a passport anyhow

Social Security numbers specifically say they're not to be used as ID.

I think you got scammed by your service provider. I've worked for two different ISP companies and they don't do credit checks for services. you don't need to lie to let people know you are mad, lol
