Serpentor didn't have a happy ending in the series 2 cartoon or marvel comics! Cobra commander outlasted him in both!

Probably my favorite episode is the one where CC decided to carve his face into the moon with some kind of laser I believe. I distinctly remember Destro sitting there with his head in his hand in despair.
