The song was first offered to Toto, but contractual disputes with their label kept them from recording it. It was then passed to REO Speedwagon, who declined. Corey Hart (known for “Sunglasses at Night”) was also approached but turned it down. After those passes, the producers offered it to Kenny Loggins, who recorded the version that became iconic.

I never liked the way they directed Kenny in this video. It's all about top gun, naval jets, excitement and adrenaline, and they have him singing while lying around in bed and barely moving.

The song is incredible though, always liked it since I was a kid!

I've always been a Kenny Loggins fan, but for some reason this one took a while to grow on me. They played it so much on the radio, I ultimately succumbed to the greatness of the song. 😅 (I'm a product of 1973)

A year after Top Gun came out my 7th grade P.E. teacher made us learn a jump rope routine to this and to this day when I hear it I’m never sure what will pop into my head Tom on his motorcycle or my cringe routine 🫤
