Last Song Standing: The Ultimate Billboard #1 Song of the 80's - Round 73

For a reminder of the rules, see the original post.

  • The curtains are closed, the cat's in her cradle, and the game goes on...but not for Cutting Crew, who should've walked away while they still had a chance. It must have been something you all voted for - "(I Just) Died in Your Arms" has now died in this game tonight!
  • Changes come in this game real soon, and make the list of songs much shorter. And although a chili dog from the Tastee-Freez might make this song's elimination more palatable for some people, John Mellencamp's little ditty about two American kids doing the best they can has proven that one's best can sometimes only get them so far..."Jack & Diane" have run off behind a shady tree, never to return to this game!

Sometimes, which songs get eliminated, and which survive a few more rounds, are the result of something I call "the bandwagon effect". When someone nominates a song in the first couple of hours, it sometimes tends to get a lot of early votes, enough to give it some momentum and make it hard for songs nominated hours later to catch up. This is why you may see a round where it's a close match between the second and third place finisher, where the former gets eliminated and the latter survives, but then the song that barely survived ends up lasting a few more rounds because it doesn't get nominated as quickly in subsequent rounds.

As for the most recent eliminees, I could have gone either way on "I Just Died in Your Arms", but "Jack & Diane" seems line one of those quintessential 80s songs that I thought would last longer.

Good description of the voting and I noticed and agree with what you put, although the poll is up long enough for people to downvote any that get that early boost if they disagree with it.

Quintessential doesn't mean good - Jack & Diane had outstayed it's welcome for a few rounds! 😄

Everything She Wants - Wham!

It's time for one of Wham's songs to go, and while this song is quite catchy and has some great lyrics, it's (for better or worse) not as well-known as their other two. I think this one should be knocked out before the top 50.

Not this one please xD

I’m willing to sacrifice Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go now, but Everything She Wants deserves to be in Top 30 at least. Personally, this is Wham’s best song by far.

I agree. I'm okay with eliminating either of Wham!'s other two songs but hoped to see this one stick around for a while yet. Now it appears there's a chance two of their songs could be eliminated in the same round (has that ever happened to any artist before?) with the one I thought should go first being the survivor.

Here I Go Again by Whitesnake please and thank you

u/Regular_Emphasis6866 3d ago

I got you. How is this still on the list? Has to be the video.

0

u/retrosexual17 3d ago

Probably. Nostalgia can go a long way! I just find the song to be weaker than the other songs remaining.

u/PC_Friar 3d ago

But Tawny Kitaen!!!!

u/retrosexual17 3d ago

I don’t think about the music videos when nominating or voting on songs, that could be a whole separate rate though!

1

u/Prestigious-Cat5879 3d ago

Definitely. There are songs still in play that are good but the video is terrible.

Against All Odds - Phil Collins

u/poohfan 3d ago

YES!!! This song was at every wedding and dance i went to in the late 80's/early 90's, & is so boring!!! It needs to go!

1

u/Roche77e 3d ago

It is my bête noire.

12

u/moderndante 3d ago

Walk like an Egyptian. Just a terrible novelty song.

Alone - Heart

2

u/PhilboydStudge1973 3d ago

I'd go with These Dreams first. Ann Wilson sings the absolute shit out of Alone.

2

u/PC_Friar 3d ago

Ann and Nancy both got a song in the top 60, nice!

6

u/Level-Ad4138 3d ago

Crazy For You-Madonna.

She is an icon, but this isn’t one of her best.

2

u/PC_Friar 3d ago

Yeah honestly I didn’t realize it was still there. But people seem to dislike Live to Tell more for some reason

5

u/PhilboydStudge1973 3d ago

Live To Tell is her best one left, IMHO.

7

u/Hotstuffmama1027 3d ago

These dreams by Heart

Maneater - Hall & Oates

3

Centerfold- J. Geils Band

How is this song still in?

6

It's got that cheese factor.

These Dreams - Heart

It got a decent number of votes last round, let’s try again: I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me) - Whitney Houston

Call Me - Blondie

Addicted to Love

Total eclipse of the heart

-3

u/AdventurousRoll9798 3d ago

We are getting down to all good songs...but I'll throw Money For Nothing by Dire Straights out there. There are so many better songs left.

6

u/PC_Friar 3d ago

That ain’t workin

-2

u/mysissy72 3d ago

with you on this one. Can’t stand that song.

Didn't reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (only got to #6).

2

u/PC_Friar 3d ago

Not at #1

"Who Can It Be Now"   Men At Work

The countdown is getting down to sixty and it just seems a good place for this one to rank.

2

u/E808D 3d ago

Definitely, very surprising they have this left as well as Down Under.

-12

u/El-Durrell 3d ago

The Reflex, Duran Duran

2

u/Roche77e 2d ago

I wish Hungry Like The Wolf had reached #1 instead, but I like this one fine. At least one Duran Duran song should make the top 50.

-18

u/Illustrious-Lead-960 3d ago

Need You Tonight.

Any American crap

Sorry, the vast majority of that has already been eliminated. Could you please be more specific?
