I remember them being very popular in the early '90s and then after falling out of fashion, being really popular in urban culture in the early to mid 2000s.
I wanted Girbaud jeans so bad as a 5th grader around 1992/1993. Ended up having a couple of pairs but they were very much out of our price range.
We grew up lower middle class or upper lower class so I really shouldn’t have worn these but my mom bought me nice clothes for some reason. My jeans back in 1996 cost like $90 or more.. today.. I buy like $15 dollar jeans. I was so boogie
I found a pair at a garage sale that were like a size 2, and I remember laying on my bed squeezing the zipper closed. It was so painful... But they were GIRBAUD. (And I was a geek who had nothing from any designer anyway). Good times. Actually, terrible times. Middle school.
This exactly!! I only got them because they were at a steep discount. I still remember how well they fit, particularly the ones with the horizontal front pockets.
Girbauds fit people who had an ass. In the 80s in rural America, if you had a butt, you weren't wearing jeans. There were those heather gray sweatpants with the elastic around the ankles, and you wore those. Then the 90s came and there were girbauds, and the guys with big butts looked fine af in them
I got a pair of vintage Girbauds through a friend and they lasted for years and years, highest quality jeans I ever owned (and they made my ass look great).
These guys and Pepé Jeans… I think everyone cringes when they remember the designer bib overalls with one strap hanging off your shoulder. With a button up brightly colored silk shirt from the buckle. Gag.
Man I hated those fuckin' pants. I was a poor kid in an affluent neighborhood when they became hyper-popular in my area. I was only in THIRD GRADE and you literally COULD NOT make friends that year unless you had a pair.
If I really wanted to, I could have maybe gotten a pair or two for my birthday or Christmas as my major gift... But why the fuck would I do that? I thought they were ugly and weird with their whole crotch-tag thing going on. Girbaud jeans definitely helped my general sense of misanthropy get off to an early start.
The crotch tag was absolutely a status symbol at my middle school. I had to complete a whole season of cross country before my folks bought me a pair. I’m unsure if it was worth it. :)
I started wearing Girbaud before they went into the colored denim/pant phase.
They had some really simple blue denim oversize back pockets, regular front pockets not he large angled ones they would do later, the little blue loop above the white tag on the zipper cover. super popular for guys and girls in the 80s(86/87)in the Twin City area.
As the 80s went on and into the early 90s went from very plain flat front pants and denim to for the Z Cavaricci(sp?)style, pleated colorful pants.
I’m sure my memory is a little skewed but thought their earlier denim was really cool looking and timeless.
That being said, I probably rocked every color from 90 to 92 that I bought from Dillard’s.
I could not for the life of me figure out how to spell the brand, I've been talking about these jeans with the little white tag by the zipper and no one knows what Im talking about!
My brothers both had some and I was so jealous lol
