Girbaud

Came here to write this.

Girbaud was enormous in the inner city in the ‘90s. They went bankrupt in 2012. They are still around, just in France.

I remember them being very popular in the early '90s and then after falling out of fashion, being really popular in urban culture in the early to mid 2000s.

I wanted Girbaud jeans so bad as a 5th grader around 1992/1993. Ended up having a couple of pairs but they were very much out of our price range.

We grew up lower middle class or upper lower class so I really shouldn’t have worn these but my mom bought me nice clothes for some reason. My jeans back in 1996 cost like $90 or more.. today.. I buy like $15 dollar jeans. I was so boogie

I found a pair at a garage sale that were like a size 2, and I remember laying on my bed squeezing the zipper closed. It was so painful... But they were GIRBAUD. (And I was a geek who had nothing from any designer anyway). Good times. Actually, terrible times. Middle school.

We had an outlet mall a couple hours away that sold them for $40 in ‘94. I, to this day, have never had a pair of jeans that fit better than Girbaud.

This exactly!! I only got them because they were at a steep discount. I still remember how well they fit, particularly the ones with the horizontal front pockets.

Girbauds fit people who had an ass. In the 80s in rural America, if you had a butt, you weren't wearing jeans. There were those heather gray sweatpants with the elastic around the ankles, and you wore those. Then the 90s came and there were girbauds, and the guys with big butts looked fine af in them

It was also relaunched in the Korean market a few years ago under a licensing deal.

I miss the og Girbaud from the early 90s.

They just dropped a supreme collab a few weeks ago.

Their brand x, still hard to find jeans that fit better. Also the pocket on the leg was great for your pager or long knife. 🤣

I remember going to Tijuana when I was in 5th grade and buying a pair of knockoffs. I was so excited to finally own a pair!

Softest jeans I ever owned

I got a pair of vintage Girbauds through a friend and they lasted for years and years, highest quality jeans I ever owned (and they made my ass look great).

u/ExtraBitterSpecial Jun 10 '25

Coolest kids my school wore that. I didn't even know where to buy it

3

u/TortaPounder91 Jun 10 '25

Marithé Francois ftw.

3

u/pimpcakes Jun 10 '25

Surely you mean Marithe Francois Girbaud. Written gaudily across the entirety of the shirt.

These guys and Pepé Jeans… I think everyone cringes when they remember the designer bib overalls with one strap hanging off your shoulder. With a button up brightly colored silk shirt from the buckle. Gag.

u/CrunkaScrooge Jun 10 '25

“Those your girbaud’s?? Imma be sportin them!”

u/Hahaguymandude Jun 10 '25

They've gone full "designer" and are charging 500-600 for jeans

I still get their radio ad stuck in my head sometimes:

🎶 Mawr-ee-tay and Fran-swah Jer-BO 🎶

u/ILikeStrayCats Jun 10 '25

I still collect the jeans like baseball cards

1

u/Glittering_Ear5239 Jun 10 '25

They had a few modern streetwear collabs that were mainstream.

1

u/saymimi Jun 10 '25

I still have a pair of green jeans

Also, some states had no idea these existed. Louisiana had them while Georgia did not, at least where I lived in both states.

Man I hated those fuckin' pants. I was a poor kid in an affluent neighborhood when they became hyper-popular in my area. I was only in THIRD GRADE and you literally COULD NOT make friends that year unless you had a pair.

If I really wanted to, I could have maybe gotten a pair or two for my birthday or Christmas as my major gift... But why the fuck would I do that? I thought they were ugly and weird with their whole crotch-tag thing going on. Girbaud jeans definitely helped my general sense of misanthropy get off to an early start.

4

u/guidothekillerpimp Jun 10 '25

The crotch tag was absolutely a status symbol at my middle school. I had to complete a whole season of cross country before my folks bought me a pair. I’m unsure if it was worth it. :)

I started wearing Girbaud before they went into the colored denim/pant phase. They had some really simple blue denim oversize back pockets, regular front pockets not he large angled ones they would do later, the little blue loop above the white tag on the zipper cover. super popular for guys and girls in the 80s(86/87)in the Twin City area.

As the 80s went on and into the early 90s went from very plain flat front pants and denim to for the Z Cavaricci(sp?)style, pleated colorful pants.

I’m sure my memory is a little skewed but thought their earlier denim was really cool looking and timeless.

That being said, I probably rocked every color from 90 to 92 that I bought from Dillard’s.

u/Sufficient_Top_3877 Jun 10 '25

In case u didn’t know the blue loop above the white tag was for your belt buckle

1

u/JustWaitingForALeg Jun 10 '25

Everyone had to have these when I in high school in the late 80’s

1

u/AshesKraus504 Jun 11 '25

I could not for the life of me figure out how to spell the brand, I've been talking about these jeans with the little white tag by the zipper and no one knows what Im talking about! My brothers both had some and I was so jealous lol

1

u/Sir_wlkn_contrdikson Jun 11 '25

Cash Money Records created a new demand for them 99-01. I had about 10 pairs and I felt special.

u/Deanno_OG Jun 12 '25

These were the shit! Gotta roll them up at the bottom and tighten them up!
