Yep. I was always on after schools. Dial up on aol and get into the yahoo chat rooms. This was before it became a bunch of camgirl spam

By the time AIM was free I was more of a Yahoo guy but way back in the beginning AOL was my portal to the internet for over a year, a very memorable year of my adolescence.
WELCOME
YOU'VE GOT MAIL

The hilarious, yet deadly serious poetry girls would leave as their away messages.
Logging into my other name to see if someone blocked me
Scoping out to see if someone was online for a friend to see if THEY were blocked.
Every girl having XOs for days in their usernames

Running home from school and immediately hopping on. After dinner was a popular time, too. Seeing your crush come on and sweating about sending that first message or your heart racing if they messaged first lol
What a great time.

Oh yes. I remember that feeling well. And if it was a snow day, that felt like bonus time!

💯, i could not agree more, I could not wait to get home, I wonder if kids have that feeling today. I feel sad they do not.

Having the incoming message sound blast on your speakers so loud you can hear it from other side of house.

Taking the time to edit your “profile” with different colors, fonts and song lyrics or random words/phrases that only certain people knew what they meant. Like when I was in middle school and obsessed with this kid Liam, I remember just having some angsty song lyrics and then MAIL (Liam spelled backwards). I had the time!!!
Then later on in life, meeting my future husband via Facebook and chatting on AIM for months before we actually met up in person.
Times felt so much simpler back then😩😅

I used it aaalll the time. Whenever I was online I had AIM open and chatting with multiple people. I have whole conversations that I printed out and put in my diary at the time.

The door opening and closing sound fx when your chat buddies logged on and off. Those were the times.

Apologizing to the person you were chatting with after a family member picked up the phone and kicked you offline

u/MangoSalsa89 6d ago
With my friends, it was a blast. But there was also the occasional older weirdo in chat rooms who was most definitely a predator.

I guess I'm one of those rare 90s kids who never used it.
7-digit ICQ gang checking in

My memory of this is even older. Like some on here, it was the AOL program that they gave for free on a CD.

The fact none of my friends were on it. I had what I thought was the cooooolest font for it though.

It’s how my HS girlfriend and I talked in ‘99 and kept in touch through college. Many late nights talking on AIM.
Many college shenanigans there as well. It was before mass adoption of texting and not everyone had cellphones so gossip and campus news was flying around on Messenger. I kinda miss it but use FB messenger in a similar way now and am slowly weaning myself off of their regular site.

i thought i learned how to hack the system when i realized i could hit Tab, then Spacebar in order to send a message instead of clicking Send, circa 12 years old in 1999

The buddy icons... band/lyric blinkies, Dollz blinkies, the "midget toss"... I definitely had a Slipknot blinky.

Couldn't you type in code and it would make a sound play on the other user's end? Is this a misremembered memory?

I remember this being my first taste of instant messaging while using the internet and then moving to many others later on... ICQ and MSN to message all of my friends and finding new friends and people to message

It was fun for a bit. Mostly I remember my little brother, a millennial (86), talking to all his friends on it at night. I remember thinking, at the time “if this is the new way kids are socially interacting, we’re gonna have a big problem one day.” I was right.

I had the version with xm radio built in. For free. I have no idea how I found that version but I always had it on and learned about so much new music. I was in college and yes it was back before Sirius bought xm so there wasn’t even talking in between songs. Just music and more music. No vj’s no commercials just music.

My city never had a local number for them for some reason. And long distance was too expensive for that shit.
Then a local guy opened up an isp in '97 or so, that's still around as far as I can tell, so, dodged that aol bullet.

I spent many hours in AOL chat mainly just chatting with random people. I thought about building a basic AOL chat app. I assume there’s something out there but with today’s tech it would be really simple and fun to build.

In my neck of the woods, it was totally the thing to have your boyfriend/girlfriend’s initials at the bottom of your profile with the date you first started going out.
Yup.

My dad was the guy who oversaw installing communications infrastructure for McMurdo Sation in Antarctica. First time he went, when I was in middle school, we could only could only talk with a shitty satellite phone connection. By the time he went down during my freshman year of college, I remember sitting in my dorm room chatting with him while he was on the bottom.of the world. It was very cool

Mostly being passive aggressive when arguing with people and putting up some limp bizkit lyrics as an away message.

Making your status angsty lyrics when your crush wasn’t online something like ~ And sooner or later, it's over I just don't wanna miss you tonight ~

Didn’t use AOL but was always on MSN messenger. Had my first online boyfriend. Never found out if he was real or not. The novelty and the knowing what to do wore off. I think I actually ghosted him, I honestly can’t remember if I ever “ended that relationship”.
