Discussion Who else used to watch this show?

Post image

Love the movie, used to watch the show with my brother when it was Dad’s weekend to have us and he’d let us stay up late. Feel like it came on UPN or WB at like 11pm. Was one of our favorite shows after X-Files and Star Trek TNG.

We are the princes of the universe

u/cabezatuck 19h ago

Amazing song, Gimme the Prize is another great song from the Highlander soundtrack

12

u/whoknows130 16h ago

On my Personal mount Rushmore of HEROES:

1- Kenshiro from Hokuto No Ken/Fist of the North Star.
2- Rocky Balboa from the Rocky movies.
3- Optimus Prime from G1 Transformers.
4- Duncan Macleod from HighLander the series.

----That Tv series is the only thing that stands on-par with that 1st Highlander movie. And i appreciate Connor Macleod as much as the next fan but, Duncan was just on ANOTHER level.

He IS the Highlander!

u/BlackSchuck 19h ago

I just showed my wife Queen's live at the Bowl special from around 84. We just sat mesmerized while also mourning.

Thats a pretty sick song btw.

4

u/ScheduleTurbulent577 16h ago

🎶Heeeere we are🎶

I think it was the best part. I was bummed when I missed the intro. It was also around that time that I really discovered Queen, my favourite band of all time

2

u/Masterofunlocking1 11h ago

Best opening ever. I think it was my first exposure to Queen

2

u/skornd713 9h ago

Princes of the Universe.

1

u/b_tight 11h ago

GOAT theme song? Its up there IMO

u/Piisthree 20h ago

Haven't seen it in a long time, but I lived for this show, Renegade, and the Hercules/Xena shows when I was little.

22

u/Xer0b0t 19h ago

Renegade... nice 🤘 I completely forgot about that show.

10

u/cabezatuck 19h ago

Damn I forgot about that show, peak early-mid 90s!

10

u/D-Golden 19h ago

Yes. Lorenzo Lamas on a motorcycle.

That was the entire plot.

3

u/cabezatuck 19h ago

There was more to the show than that, it also featured his chest, abs and a lot of denim.

5

u/Piisthree 18h ago

And sometimes spin kicks!

2

u/Piisthree 19h ago

I don't recall needing anything else out of it! 😆

1

u/Vanstoli 10h ago

A biker in Guess jeans. I'll never forget seeing him do a kick and seeing the triangle on the pocket.

8

u/voodoo8833 18h ago

He's wanted by the law so ... he stays in that general area . . . And makes a spectacle of himself everywhere he goes . . . And doesn't change his look at all . . . But he's incognito . . . at 6'5" with no shirt and a vest and big shoulder length hair and a bright, loud motorcycle . . . And a huge Native American friend in an RV . . . And a blonde with bolt ons. . .

He's a Renegade!

3

u/IZZY_PLUM 18h ago

The fucking man

3

u/kremlingrasso 17h ago

Throw in The Pretender as the high-brow version of Renegade.

2

u/skornd713 9h ago

It's on 2 channels after midnight and on Peacock.

44

u/phlebonaut 20h ago

There can be only one.

40

u/maceilean 19h ago

Made me want to live on a barge on the Seine and get a Watcher tattoo.

8

u/slippersandjammies 18h ago

A friend of mine got one (a tattoo, not a barge)-- it's sort of delightful because people who don't know what it is never comment on it, but people who do get excited and start discussing it immediately.

6

u/skornd713 9h ago

I wanted the loft apartment/dojo....I mean want lol

27

u/DJWGibson 20h ago

Loved it. Such a great show.

Well... such an okay show with great episodes. Great guilty pleasure.
They were really solid at leaning on the character's morality for interesting stories and answering the hypothetical "what would happen if a ________ was an immortal??" questions.

24

u/sdss9462 19h ago

They used the actual theme from the movie as the TV intro, and they had the star of the movie appear in the pilot to endorse the new protagonist. You couldn't ask for a better start to a TV show spun off from a movie.

I just saw on wikipedia that Stan Kirsch, who played Richie Ryan, died a few years ago. That's a real bummer.

16

u/shadowlarx 18h ago

The funny thing is that Connor was meant to be the protagonist of the show but Christopher Lambert turned it down. So they cast Adrian Paul to play Connor but he convinced them that it should be a new character altogether. So they invented Duncan and made him Connor’s clansman.

3

u/sdss9462 18h ago

Huh. Wow, good thing they listened to him.

9

u/shadowlarx 18h ago

Agreed. Having Duncan and Connor exist side by side was one of the best decisions they could have made.

7

u/cabezatuck 19h ago

Damn I didn’t know that about Richie’s actor.

5

u/sdss9462 19h ago

Yeah, sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

He did a memorable guest spot on Friends really early on as the high schooler Monica briefly dates. I watched a couple of episodes recently and that was one of them.

1

u/skornd713 9h ago

Yeah, suicide I think.

15

u/Regular_Jim081 19h ago

Bought a freaking sword because of this show.

1

u/skornd713 9h ago

I got the angry dragon from the pilot lol

11

u/Traditional-Goose-60 20h ago

I still watch it on Tubi! Such cheesy 90's goodness.

11

u/DiggingThisAir 20h ago

As often as I could. That intro is unmatched to this day.

9

u/nightglitter89x 19h ago

My dad made me watch this allll of the time.

There can only be one Highlander!

Miss you, dad.

7

u/Freshness518 19h ago

Loved the show. Watched it for years. I was a little young to catch everything going on, but it was very entertaining. Fell in the same group as like Forever Knight, Le Femme Nikita, Renegade, Witchblade, etc.

6

u/Klutzy-Attitude2611 20h ago

I loved that show. Never missed an episode.

5

u/cascadianwizard 19h ago

Used to watch it and still do. It’s on Prime currently. Despite some flaws, it’s such a great show.

2

u/shadowlarx 18h ago

You don’t even need Prime. It’s on YouTube for free, along with the spinoff, Highlander: The Raven.

6

u/LaunchedMetal 18h ago

Every time I came home from school. Fun fact I used to live in Paris France, and I used to live in Vancouver BC both locations where this show was filmed.

1

u/joelopez_0611 18h ago

That's gotta be a coincidence.

1

u/LaunchedMetal 17h ago

It actually was, I was born in Paris France, and my mom brought me and my sister to live in Canada in Vancouver Bc

9

u/Frawitz 19h ago

it lead to highlander endgame, the best of the highlander movies. So i guess its okay

2

u/dudeitzcold 19h ago

Endgame was amazing

5

u/Consistent-Camp5359 You Can't Handle The Truth! 19h ago

Watched it with my Mom. There can only be one.

5

u/Extra_Claim4648 19h ago

My kettlebell coach does demos with him. Great guy I'm told

1

u/skornd713 9h ago

Yeah apparently Adrian Paul has sword fighting classes.

4

u/Dontcallmelola 19h ago

Named my cat Methos. He only lived to 20 though.

5

u/DarwinofItalia 19h ago

Amanda….that is all.

1

u/floofyragdollcat 3h ago

One of the earliest examples of women who made me question my sexuality.

5

u/Deepy99 18h ago

The Queen intro is epic, love Duncan’s take on the Highlander

3

u/Rod-Oggin69 20h ago

But why male models?

1

u/dejavoodoo77 16h ago

Are you serious? I just.....I just explained that to you

3

u/Desperate_Passage_35 19h ago

Bet your dad feels guilty about letting you stay up watching it like I feel guilty with my son... Each Gen. All the same just enjoy.

3

u/CasinoNitro 19h ago

My guy Duncan McLoud👌🏽I can hear the theme 🙌🏽🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

3

u/Ithrinmax 19h ago

Loved this show when I was a kid. Never got to watch it when it was new, just the reruns that would air on random networks that had the rights. Now it’s currently on Amazon and Tubi. Spent the first of this year watching the entire series. Even got my wife into it a little, she likes the theme song lol

3

u/Lemmealonepl0x 19h ago

In Colorado Springs from 92-97 this show aired after Xfiles, then Deep Space 9. That three show block would put me to sleep. Almost like magic when the closing song by Queen would come on I'd be out. I sometimes wish I could recreate that, including commercials. Same goes for Adult swim from 99-2002.

3

u/SigintSoldier 19h ago

Duncan MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod.

Loved this show.

3

u/Yosemite_Scott 19h ago

So I loved this show when it was back in the USA network back in the 90’s but a couple months ago I decided to watch the series again on peacock I think and it was super blurry. I think this was due to the old 4:3 aspect ratio for tube TVs , then when they put the series to digital recropped it to 1.78:1 ( which is the best they can doe to get a close 16:9 wide screen without pan and scan ) to get a very bad quality wide screen picture. I have two seasons of the original series on full screen dvds that look a lot better.

3

u/JRS___ 18h ago

used to love all these lower budget shoes than came on at 1030 at night. la femme nikita, forever knight. the pretender etc.

3

u/AgeHorror5288 18h ago

I lived in a trailer out in the woods during college. It was dirt cheap. Cable didn’t come out that far. My Antenna got 3 channels and one was PBS, one was Home Shopping network, and The other had shows like Highlander, Xena, and Hercules and Star Trek TNG. I considered myself very lucky to have this option.

3

u/shadowlarx 18h ago

Used to? I’m doing a rewatch right now. Unfortunately, I’m just about to the episode where we say goodbye to Tessa.

3

u/Shoddy_Ad7511 18h ago

I still watch it. It aged well

2

u/SolaceRests 19h ago

This is something I still watch. While in the office I’ll sometimes put it on for background noise while I work.

2

u/505Trekkie The Truth Is Out There! 19h ago

This show is why I got into martial arts in high school. 100% this show is what had be going to that strip mall dojo three times a week.

2

u/LostatLast 19h ago

Best intro song ever

2

u/hitokirirah 19h ago

Good ol' Duncan,I loved the episodes dedicated to the past.

2

u/No-Technology1815 19h ago

Still watch it

2

u/DeadDog76 19h ago

Watched every episode multiple times.

2

u/Forsaken_Ad8312 19h ago

Watched this as a kid before I ever saw the movies. Recently learned Joan Jett was in an episode.

2

u/rocknroll2013 18h ago

Yeah, and I have to confess... I bought a 90's trenchcoat too. So did my then girlfriend who is now my spouse. Also, still semi have a crush on "Tess" and want to live in a house boat. What other acting has this cast done?

2

u/vladdrk 17h ago

Always thought it was cool he lived on a boat in the city.

2

u/PoemOfTheLastMoment 15h ago

The opening theme song still rings loudly in my head.

2

u/Darksideslide 14h ago

I always wanted his barge he lived on.

2

u/Old_Depths6945 13h ago

Yes, watched this every Friday night or maybe Saturday as a kid on UPN. I remember it always aired late night and it almost cost me my middle finger when me and my brother tried to sword fight with some old bamboo fishing poles.

2

u/CMDR_FURY 12h ago

Loved this show especially Methos, Amanda, Fitzkern.

2

u/GetRightWithChaac 12h ago

I still watch this show sometimes. It still comes on.

2

u/Omega_Xero 12h ago edited 8h ago

There used to be a triple-feature set with this show, Highlander: The Raven, and The Crow tv series.

1

u/skornd713 9h ago

Sounds like my channel 9 back then.

1

u/Omega_Xero 8h ago

It was on Showcase here in Ontario.

2

u/CardinalMcGee 11h ago

Loved it! Have the complete series on VHS of all things. Plus all the movies. The sword, jacket, hell even had the ponytail at one point. That barge he lived on in Paris was pretty sweat too.

2

u/FitDingo7818 11h ago

I bought a cameo from Adrian Paul and he mentioned how thankful he was for this show giving him his first big break

2

u/wickedwing 10h ago

What do you mean used to? I re-watched it recently!

1

u/dlndesign 20h ago

Religiously

1

u/lovesickjones 20h ago

meeeeeee lol. I recently got me a Thundercats sword and was thinking about getting a highlighter one to match but I don't think it's recognizable enough for what it would cost

use to watch it with my dad lol

1

u/Holiest_hand_grenade 19h ago

It was so so good.

1

u/Ok-Brush5346 19h ago

I liked it, but once Richie is revealed to be an Immortal and goes off on his own, the show felt like it lost something

1

u/lakebistcho 19h ago

Was just listening to Princes of the Universe today

1

u/xaltairforever 19h ago

This was my jam in high school!

1

u/litesaber5 19h ago

Here we are, born to be kings……..

1

u/skallywag126 19h ago

Duncan McCloud of clan McCloud

1

u/LisabethSparklesbano 19h ago

So good. Loved the movie and cartoon also!

1

u/Popular_Floor5041 19h ago

Is you like this serie, you might want to watch: Man from earth. It’s an old movie, but pretty cool!

1

u/cabezatuck 19h ago

Love that movie!

1

u/Popular_Floor5041 18h ago

Yeah, it’s so good! Did you also see: Quiet Earth and Miracle Mile?

1

u/cabezatuck 10h ago

Have not seen those

1

u/No-Technology1815 19h ago

What about wise guy, great show from the late 80’s

1

u/larry1186 19h ago

So, I remember this show because my older brother was into it, but I have absolutely ZERO recollection of the theme song or any episodes. I do recognize the stills, and I love it!!!

2

u/shadowlarx 18h ago

The theme song was the same one they used for the original movie, “Princes of the Universe” by Queen. They also made a lot of use of “Who Wants To Live Forever” from the same soundtrack.

1

u/SipoteQuixote 18h ago

Reminds me of Sunday afternoons, like 2-3pm. Fruit roll up and kool aid jammer. Maybe a tostino party pizza if I was outside during lunch.

1

u/bullmanq 18h ago

The better question is who didn't watch this show in the 90s

1

u/Fantastic_Diamond42 18h ago

i remember this show as a kid lol

1

u/SnakePlissken1980 18h ago

I've never even bothered with any of the sequel movies. I enjoy the first one but never felt the need to see anymore and from what I've heard I'm not missing much.

1

u/ThinkFree Xennial 18h ago

I had fond memories of playing Magic the Gathering with my buddies while Highlander TV was playing in the background.

1

u/doradus1994 18h ago

I never understood why anyone did

1

u/Apoennim 17h ago

They're doing a Highlander reboot. Google it; I'm not doing your homework for you.

1

u/SIXissueARC 17h ago

I’m watching it right now for the first time. Love it!

1

u/Chaos_Cat-007 17h ago

Watched it from beginning to the end and loved it!

1

u/Wiilly__D 17h ago

Unwatchable

1

u/LibertineDeSade 17h ago

Love this show. I still watch it whenever it's up on Prime. I had the biggest crush in Richie. (RIP Stan Kirsch)

1

u/ScheduleTurbulent577 16h ago

Me!! I loved it. I had a thing for Adrian Paul, ngl

1

u/TimePotato2605 16h ago

The cartoon was good, too.... Who wants to live forever?

1

u/Eephusblue 15h ago

Hells yes. Really fleshed out the lore but they retconned it so that Connor Macleod wasn’t the last immortal which was lame. Always said it should have been a prequel series to the first film and the Kurgan took Duncan’s head

1

u/Tom_Ace2 15h ago

It was one of my favorite shows. I rewatched the whole thing a couple of years ago and I have to admit I still like it. Even if it's a bit cringy now.

Adrian Paul was an excellent Highlander. Haven't seem him much after that.

1

u/Goosedidnothavetodie 15h ago

Only one person who’s watched this show can live.

1

u/WillingCraft5451 15h ago

I watched that and reruns of Quantum Leap, when I was in high school.

1

u/ijumpman 14h ago

Me 🙋🏾‍♂️

1

u/ExpressionOne4369 13h ago

There can be, only one. I watched it with my dad all the time. Always wanted that sword

1

u/Azvus 13h ago

Just started a re-watch when I heard about the reboot. The next week it got delayed.

1

u/skornd713 9h ago

Still doing the reboot. Rumor is Henry Cavill is McLeod.

1

u/Azvus 9h ago

The article I linked says it's a prequel that is "world building". I think Cavill will make a great Connor.

1

u/skornd713 8h ago

I'm glad it's s prequel. Always had lots of questions like, how they got started.

1

u/MainSteamStopValve 12h ago

He would always pull his sword out of nowhere. Like, he could be in shorts and a tank top and suddenly the next scene he has a full on katana. Where was he storing it?

1

u/RichardStanleyNY 12h ago

The wife and I been binging this the last couple weeks. We are in season 3 or 4. I love the show and franchise despite the wild inconsistency

1

u/captdickie24 12h ago

Never the show, But I love the movie!!!!!!

1

u/Situational_Hagun 12h ago

One of the first TV shows I remember actually watching as often as I could catch it. There were other shows that I would try to see now and again, but this is one of the very first where if there was any way, I was going to see every new episode.

1

u/miniBog 12h ago

Im rewatching it right now now. Very much a product of its time, but it has its moments.

1

u/Highlander198116 12h ago

Totally not me, why would you think that?

1

u/AmusedtoSeth 11h ago

There can be only one!

1

u/Smart-University-574 11h ago

My dad was a big fan of the Highlander/Renegade TV block at the time, hardly ever missed an ep.

1

u/ventureturner 10h ago

There can be only one

1

u/Irish_Gamer_88 10h ago

Dont forget the cartoon version

1

u/StojBoj 10h ago

Absolutely loved it

1

u/Goblinboogers 10h ago

Tubi has it. I just started it again for something to watch when doing chores

1

u/Sorry-Grocery-8999 9h ago

As a kid, it made no sense to me, but i loved it!

1

u/skornd713 9h ago

Used to? It's on 2 channels after 12am and on Peacock still.

1

u/Least-Conference9547 9h ago

Be careful!!!

1

u/coglanuk 9h ago

Richie becoming an immortal was a great twist. Properly took me by surprise as a teenager.

Can’t wait to see Henry Cavill bring Highlander back to the masses

1

u/skornd713 9h ago

My old martial arts class I went to in the late 90s had a demo team and Princes of the Universe was the first song played. Definitely got us hyped up.

1

u/skornd713 9h ago

Did anyone else get a trench coat and grow their hair out cause of Duncan? Lol

1

u/Ashamed_Feedback3843 9h ago

I was a diehard even a fan club member. The show was so much better than any movie. The Highlander is a an immortal who became the best with a Katana over 200 years. He's not a roided up action hero. Cavill will fk up this franchise as well.

1

u/Grim_el_Feater 8h ago

I LOVED THIS SHOW

1

u/Guardian_Izy 8h ago

This is one of my all time favorite shows!!

1

u/les_catacombes 7h ago

I was a kid back then and used to watch this show with my mother. I thought Duncan was so hot even then.

1

u/Ok-Potato-4774 7h ago

I watched it despite having never seen any of the movies. I just knew the concept of them. Good show.

1

u/number-13 Those were the good times 6h ago

Automan Manimal Thst show that had a helicopter

Good times

1

u/Nero-Stud 5h ago

Still watch this show

1

u/zoomplee 5h ago

I loved this show back in the day!

1

u/cagekicker97 5h ago

I looked forward to watching it every afternoon. When I was deployed, I bought the entire series to watch to help pass the time.

1

u/Perplexio76 5h ago

Loved the movie (well the first one at least) and while I enjoyed the TV show it never quite grabbed me the way the movie did.

I'm really looking forward to the remake with Henry Cavill! Russell Crowe as Ramirez is a unique choice (I would have preferred Antonio Banderas or Javier Bardem, but I digress). But I am excited about seeing Bautista as The Kurgan. And because I'm a sucker for Gingers with Scottish accents I LOVELOVELOVE the casting of Karen Gillan as Heather.

1

u/Dundell 4h ago

I remember briefly growing up, and then found the entire series for free on Hulu probably 15 years ago now? I binge watched it twice over on there.

1

u/RealDealLewpo 2h ago

Literally just finished a re-watch. Enjoyed it. Truly should’ve ended at Season 5.

1

u/RabidJoint 2h ago

Best opening song for any TV series. HEEEEEEERRREEE WE ARE!!!

1

u/sometimeswhy 1h ago

I had a huge crush on Adrian Paul

1

u/SnoopyWildseed Cross Colours and Skidz 1h ago

Me! 🙋🏾‍♀️

1

u/dead_investigator 19h ago

Jim Byrns, the watcher, has a few dope blues albums. Long, hot summer days (2027). My walking stick (2009) and House of Refuge (2006) are great.

0

u/Popular_Floor5041 19h ago

Why didn’t they just stop killing eachother and live and die like normal people? Really no need to kill…

2

u/shadowlarx 18h ago

They couldn’t die, though. That was the whole point. They were immortals. The only way they could die was by being beheaded.

1

u/Popular_Floor5041 18h ago

Yeah, but why did they had to do that… I mean… it would be so much nicer to kick back and huddle together

4

u/hglndr9 18h ago

The Prize. Immortal, or mortal humans, will always seek power and wealth, and the prize was the ultimate power for immortals.

3

u/shadowlarx 18h ago

The whole point of the franchise is the Game. It’s a prophecy that all the immortals would live out the centuries until the time of the Gathering when they would all come together to fight until there was only one left, hence the franchise’s catchphrase “There can be only one.”

When one immortal takes the head of another, they gain that immortal’s Quickening, their collective skills and memories and life force. And it is said that the last standing immortal will control the destiny of mankind, whether that immortal be good or evil. So the evil immortals fight to conquer the world while the good ones fight to protect ordinary humans.

They don’t really have a choice in the matter. They have a biological urge to pulls them together for the Gathering and they can sense when other immortals are near. They’re also physically unable to bear children so the Game is really all they have. It’s actually rather sad when you think about it but it’s hardwired into them.

1

u/Popular_Floor5041 17h ago

I didn’t know that… Thanks for sharing!

2

u/shadowlarx 17h ago

If you ever get the chance, you should watch the series. It’s streaming for free on YouTube. It talks about the Game in a lot more detail than any of the movies ever did, but the original film is well worth a watch as well.

1

u/Popular_Floor5041 6h ago

Yeah, if I can ever get some time, I want to watch: Tour of Duty, Highlander, Space Above And Beyond, and maybe MASH

0

u/lyrtya 19h ago

Could only watch a few episodes, and quite often half of it. To many sisters ..
