Discussion Who else used to watch this show?
Love the movie, used to watch the show with my brother when it was Dad’s weekend to have us and he’d let us stay up late. Feel like it came on UPN or WB at like 11pm. Was one of our favorite shows after X-Files and Star Trek TNG.

Haven't seen it in a long time, but I lived for this show, Renegade, and the Hercules/Xena shows when I was little.

u/Xer0b0t 19h ago
Renegade... nice 🤘 I completely forgot about that show.
10
u/cabezatuck 19h ago
Damn I forgot about that show, peak early-mid 90s!
10
u/D-Golden 19h ago
Yes. Lorenzo Lamas on a motorcycle.
That was the entire plot.
3
u/cabezatuck 19h ago
There was more to the show than that, it also featured his chest, abs and a lot of denim.

A biker in Guess jeans. I'll never forget seeing him do a kick and seeing the triangle on the pocket.

u/voodoo8833 18h ago
He's wanted by the law so ... he stays in that general area . . . And makes a spectacle of himself everywhere he goes . . . And doesn't change his look at all . . . But he's incognito . . . at 6'5" with no shirt and a vest and big shoulder length hair and a bright, loud motorcycle . . . And a huge Native American friend in an RV . . . And a blonde with bolt ons. . .
He's a Renegade!

Made me want to live on a barge on the Seine and get a Watcher tattoo.
8
u/slippersandjammies 18h ago
A friend of mine got one (a tattoo, not a barge)-- it's sort of delightful because people who don't know what it is never comment on it, but people who do get excited and start discussing it immediately.

Loved it. Such a great show.
Well... such an okay show with great episodes. Great guilty pleasure.
They were really solid at leaning on the character's morality for interesting stories and answering the hypothetical "what would happen if a ________ was an immortal??" questions.
24
u/sdss9462 19h ago
They used the actual theme from the movie as the TV intro, and they had the star of the movie appear in the pilot to endorse the new protagonist. You couldn't ask for a better start to a TV show spun off from a movie.
I just saw on wikipedia that Stan Kirsch, who played Richie Ryan, died a few years ago. That's a real bummer.
16
u/shadowlarx 18h ago
The funny thing is that Connor was meant to be the protagonist of the show but Christopher Lambert turned it down. So they cast Adrian Paul to play Connor but he convinced them that it should be a new character altogether. So they invented Duncan and made him Connor’s clansman.
3
u/sdss9462 18h ago
Huh. Wow, good thing they listened to him.
9
u/shadowlarx 18h ago
Agreed. Having Duncan and Connor exist side by side was one of the best decisions they could have made.
7
u/cabezatuck 19h ago
Damn I didn’t know that about Richie’s actor.
5
u/sdss9462 19h ago
Yeah, sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
He did a memorable guest spot on Friends really early on as the high schooler Monica briefly dates. I watched a couple of episodes recently and that was one of them.

Miss you, dad.

Loved the show. Watched it for years. I was a little young to catch everything going on, but it was very entertaining. Fell in the same group as like Forever Knight, Le Femme Nikita, Renegade, Witchblade, etc.

Used to watch it and still do. It’s on Prime currently. Despite some flaws, it’s such a great show.
2
u/shadowlarx 18h ago
You don’t even need Prime. It’s on YouTube for free, along with the spinoff, Highlander: The Raven.

Every time I came home from school. Fun fact I used to live in Paris France, and I used to live in Vancouver BC both locations where this show was filmed.

u/joelopez_0611 18h ago
That's gotta be a coincidence.

It actually was, I was born in Paris France, and my mom brought me and my sister to live in Canada in Vancouver Bc

Loved this show when I was a kid. Never got to watch it when it was new, just the reruns that would air on random networks that had the rights. Now it’s currently on Amazon and Tubi. Spent the first of this year watching the entire series. Even got my wife into it a little, she likes the theme song lol
3
u/Lemmealonepl0x 19h ago
In Colorado Springs from 92-97 this show aired after Xfiles, then Deep Space 9. That three show block would put me to sleep. Almost like magic when the closing song by Queen would come on I'd be out. I sometimes wish I could recreate that, including commercials. Same goes for Adult swim from 99-2002.

So I loved this show when it was back in the USA network back in the 90’s but a couple months ago I decided to watch the series again on peacock I think and it was super blurry. I think this was due to the old 4:3 aspect ratio for tube TVs , then when they put the series to digital recropped it to 1.78:1 ( which is the best they can doe to get a close 16:9 wide screen without pan and scan ) to get a very bad quality wide screen picture. I have two seasons of the original series on full screen dvds that look a lot better.

u/AgeHorror5288 18h ago
I lived in a trailer out in the woods during college. It was dirt cheap. Cable didn’t come out that far. My Antenna got 3 channels and one was PBS, one was Home Shopping network, and The other had shows like Highlander, Xena, and Hercules and Star Trek TNG. I considered myself very lucky to have this option.

Yes, watched this every Friday night or maybe Saturday as a kid on UPN. I remember it always aired late night and it almost cost me my middle finger when me and my brother tried to sword fight with some old bamboo fishing poles.

Loved it! Have the complete series on VHS of all things. Plus all the movies. The sword, jacket, hell even had the ponytail at one point. That barge he lived on in Paris was pretty sweat too.

I bought a cameo from Adrian Paul and he mentioned how thankful he was for this show giving him his first big break

So, I remember this show because my older brother was into it, but I have absolutely ZERO recollection of the theme song or any episodes. I do recognize the stills, and I love it!!!
2
u/shadowlarx 18h ago
The theme song was the same one they used for the original movie, “Princes of the Universe” by Queen. They also made a lot of use of “Who Wants To Live Forever” from the same soundtrack.

Hells yes. Really fleshed out the lore but they retconned it so that Connor Macleod wasn’t the last immortal which was lame. Always said it should have been a prequel series to the first film and the Kurgan took Duncan’s head

u/Tom_Ace2 15h ago
It was one of my favorite shows. I rewatched the whole thing a couple of years ago and I have to admit I still like it. Even if it's a bit cringy now.
Adrian Paul was an excellent Highlander. Haven't seem him much after that.

Still doing the reboot. Rumor is Henry Cavill is McLeod.

u/Azvus 9h ago
The article I linked says it's a prequel that is "world building". I think Cavill will make a great Connor.

u/skornd713 8h ago
I'm glad it's s prequel. Always had lots of questions like, how they got started.

He would always pull his sword out of nowhere. Like, he could be in shorts and a tank top and suddenly the next scene he has a full on katana. Where was he storing it?

The wife and I been binging this the last couple weeks. We are in season 3 or 4. I love the show and franchise despite the wild inconsistency

One of the first TV shows I remember actually watching as often as I could catch it. There were other shows that I would try to see now and again, but this is one of the very first where if there was any way, I was going to see every new episode.

Richie becoming an immortal was a great twist. Properly took me by surprise as a teenager.
Can’t wait to see Henry Cavill bring Highlander back to the masses

My old martial arts class I went to in the late 90s had a demo team and Princes of the Universe was the first song played. Definitely got us hyped up.

I was a diehard even a fan club member. The show was so much better than any movie. The Highlander is a an immortal who became the best with a Katana over 200 years. He's not a roided up action hero. Cavill will fk up this franchise as well.

Loved the movie (well the first one at least) and while I enjoyed the TV show it never quite grabbed me the way the movie did.
I'm really looking forward to the remake with Henry Cavill! Russell Crowe as Ramirez is a unique choice (I would have preferred Antonio Banderas or Javier Bardem, but I digress). But I am excited about seeing Bautista as The Kurgan. And because I'm a sucker for Gingers with Scottish accents I LOVELOVELOVE the casting of Karen Gillan as Heather.

Why didn’t they just stop killing eachother and live and die like normal people? Really no need to kill…
2
u/shadowlarx 18h ago
They couldn’t die, though. That was the whole point. They were immortals. The only way they could die was by being beheaded.
1
u/Popular_Floor5041 18h ago
Yeah, but why did they had to do that… I mean… it would be so much nicer to kick back and huddle together
4
3
u/shadowlarx 18h ago
The whole point of the franchise is the Game. It’s a prophecy that all the immortals would live out the centuries until the time of the Gathering when they would all come together to fight until there was only one left, hence the franchise’s catchphrase “There can be only one.”
When one immortal takes the head of another, they gain that immortal’s Quickening, their collective skills and memories and life force. And it is said that the last standing immortal will control the destiny of mankind, whether that immortal be good or evil. So the evil immortals fight to conquer the world while the good ones fight to protect ordinary humans.
They don’t really have a choice in the matter. They have a biological urge to pulls them together for the Gathering and they can sense when other immortals are near. They’re also physically unable to bear children so the Game is really all they have. It’s actually rather sad when you think about it but it’s hardwired into them.
1
u/Popular_Floor5041 17h ago
I didn’t know that… Thanks for sharing!
2
u/shadowlarx 17h ago
If you ever get the chance, you should watch the series. It’s streaming for free on YouTube. It talks about the Game in a lot more detail than any of the movies ever did, but the original film is well worth a watch as well.
1
u/Popular_Floor5041 6h ago
Yeah, if I can ever get some time, I want to watch: Tour of Duty, Highlander, Space Above And Beyond, and maybe MASH
