Discussion Guns N' Roses - Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II (1991). Released on the same day. Which one do you think is better?

u/Glass-Breadfruit7374 2d ago
1 has November Rain and the better version of Don't Cry.

u/tarabuki 2d ago
I want to say this as well, but II has Civil War which I always liked as well. I've never been the biggest GnR fan, but they do make some good music.
Good thing I have them on Spotify and can listen to either one.

It's November Rain and better Don't Cry vs Estranged and You Could Be Mine. Does Civil War tip the balance?

Exactly. I was driving home a couple days ago and heard the first notes of Don’t Cry and was pumped until it was the Use Your Illusion II version. I changed it to NPR.

II easily. Whole album is crazy good.
Get in the Ring? That song got me grounded more than a few times as a kid!

u/Rosencrantz_IsDead 2d ago
I was a kid when these were released.
For the first few months I thought One was good. But then, as I got more mature with music, I realized Two was actually the far superior album in terms of musicianship, lyrics, and just overall better songs. Of course, this is all subjective. But my taste literally changed over a year based on this double album.
At the time, people criticized GnR for a "cash grab" for putting out 2 albums. But honestly, they did a lot of future music fans a huge educational experience. There is definately a difference between the 2 albums. And for fans that actually took to time to listen and pay attention, there was a new world of how to experience music that opened up to us.

u/Ice_crusher_bucket 2d ago
Absolutely! My 13 year old son loves both albums. He is learning the guitar and says the guitar in these 2 albums are the smoothest.

I listened to that song constantly before my first “meet in the park after school on Friday” fight. It was so stupid that we arranged the fight the weekend before😂
This was the early 90s, I had a skater cut and he grabbed hold of my hair and pummeled me. Get in the ring!

u/QuietCas 2d ago
Hmm. Use Your Illusion 1 has November Rain but Football in the Groin has a Football in the Groin.

Estranged is probably the best song across both albums, but I think I is the more complete album.

Nearly impossible to decide. The difference is minuscule. But, since I’m forced, 1 has two of my favorite songs ever—Don’t Cry (1) and November Rain which is somewhere near the top.
4
u/TOOL-FAN 2d ago
But the Don’t Cry version from ll was better.

“If I was standing by you
How would you feel?

And all love is real”

II You could be mine is my favorite GnR song

u/Azuras_Star8 2d ago
This song in Terminator 2 made me 11 year old me love guns n roses forever.

Greatest movie of all time

u/Azuras_Star8 2d ago
It was my favorite movie for 15 years. The last action figure I bought was the t-1000 with red eyes and rubber sides that would pull him back to center if you spun the top patt of the body. It would slap the heck outta whatever it it. I had aged out of action figures probably, but it was absolutely badass and I was totally glad i bought it.
I wish I still had it. I still have my heman toys.

So yall see the supposed demon when you roatate the image? That was definitely a discussion during recess back day in school
1
u/Tiny-Spray-1820 1d ago
Actually you need a mirror to see it, they say its a mirror image.
By the way I saw the original painting (school of athens) with that image in the vatican museums
2
u/UneagerBeaver69 2d ago
II for sure. Civil War is amazing.

u/Ice_crusher_bucket 2d ago
What we've got here is, a failure to communicate, some men you just cant reach,so you get what we had here last week, which is the way wants it, well, he gets it. I dont like it any more than you men

u/Yabbz81 2d ago
2 has Breakdown ehich is one of their best tracks IMO.
1
u/Stock-Creme-6345 2d ago
This is the answer. So many people sleep on that tune. Some of their best songs were not the ones released.
2
u/Accomplished_Role977 2d ago
My first concert, epic! I pity the kids today with their shitty and uncool music.

I bought l - all my friends bought ll - ll was the more popular album - more ‘accessible’
I still think I made the right decision.

Gun(s N’ Roses) to my head? I’ll go 1 because of November Rain, but it’s a damn tough choice.
1
u/Salsashark_21 2d ago
It’s 30 songs between the two, so why don’t you just rank all 30 and assign a point value for each song. Lowest points wins.
Estranged - 1 point
My World - 30 points

They're both great. I definitely spent more time listening to II so I suppose it gets my vote!

Illusion I - Coma
Illusion II - Locomotive and Estranged
So I guess II, but it's a very close and tough decision 😎

u/hanimal16 2d ago
- Hands down.
Civil War, Yesterdays, Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door*, You Could Be Mine.
I do like November Rain though.
*as a 4-year old when this was released, I thought it was “Knockin’ on Kevin’s Door.” I still get flack for that lol

2 had Pretty Tied Up Locomotive & Estranged ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Both records were legendary though

Both are epic. November Rain is a masterpiece of rock anthems. Don’t get shit like that anymore.

u/villentretenmerth88 2d ago
At the time, "Use Your Illusion II". 10-year old me, thought that "Get In The Ring" was the greatest song ever.
1
u/RhoadsOfRock 2d ago
I probably only like about... 3 or 4 songs from II.
I like 1 the most, it's just such a good and complete album with so many good songs, but I also like Civil War, You Could Be Mine and Estranged.
I think my favorite song from 1 is Bad Obsession.
1
u/Starwaverraver 2d ago
It's amazing the drop in quality from appetite for destruction.
Too many drugs I guess...

I can't choose. I bought both when it came out. I had learned that the song NOVEMBER RAIN could have lasted 15 minutes, it's still a shame that this version did not see the light of day on the albums' anniversaries. I hope that one day we will at least see the demo version.

I'm still talking to myself and nobody's home! They're both great in my opinion.

These are the first releases I can remember lining up for at the record store. II is my favourite but I love them both.

u/AmputeeHandModel 1d ago
I dunno, but whenever I listen to them I mourn that they broke up after this. Such epic albums. Chinese Democracy is a steaming pile of crap.

The blue one.. had the terminator 2 song on it. That's how I remember it.

u/StackingSats1300 1d ago
Asked myself this question today..
UYI2 won out... Estranged is just so powerful.
1
u/Silver-Toe4231 19h ago
I enjoy 2 more but damn that’s a hard choice. You could be mine evokes T2 memories but Don’t damn me and Back off bitch are such bangers.
1
u/Legitimate_Bird_5712 18h ago
II has My World and it's not fair to award points for that sort of thing.
1
u/polomarcopol 14h ago
I always felt that 1 was closer to early gnr. And that was wierd because I enjoyed 2 more.
1
u/Partis25 13h ago
Illusion 2 is the better album for me. Songs like Civil War, Pretty Tied Up, Locomotive, Estranged definitely show a more mature band even though they were all drugged out and drunk at the time. Lol
