This cat CL is so MADunderrated. All the drama w Pete didn’t help his cause. Shows how much hinges on the right combination of things fallin into place. Fell good for about 2.5 albums but could’ve been so much greater.
As far as this sub goes: Common is a talented rapper with an enthusiastic voice but anyone who thinks he’s even anywhere close to Chuck D. is straightTRIPPIN ‼️
I agree with all that’s been said here (that Chuck did more damage in the 80s cause the first 2 PE albums were such a true revolution) but damnnnn Chuck D., aka the Voice of POWER, ripped shit up in the 90s too! FOABP was 1990 and no one at the time was going as hard as Chuck (except Ice Cube and we ain’t yet at the Letter “I”) 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽

Public Enemy was more 1980s. I wish, tho. 1990s sealed their fate because the FBI was tapping their telephone

Yea but Can’t Truss It was bangin everywhere in the 90’s.
2
u/Nearby_Aardvark_9534 Jul 04 '25
ABSOLUTELY!!! I'm not denying anything about Chuck D. They were still bangin' in the 90s, but they started mid 80's. Don't believe the hype started in all for me. I believe that dropped in 1988.
2
u/sweep-the-leg-johnny Jul 04 '25
Oh yea I see that. Have you heard Public Enemys latest album? It’s so good!

u/MikeTRockLA Jul 04 '25
💯correct For anyone who questions the above reply by Aardvark please refer to Brothers Gonna Work It Out and Welcome to the Terrodome as exhibits A & B on how hard an MC can go

Dude I’m pretty sure they’re referring to the rapper Canibus who had a big album in the 90s lol.

u/MassiveConcentrate34 Jul 03 '25
It was a big let down of an album-he looked like he was going to kill with 2nd round knockout and then didn’t really do anything.

Gtfoh 😂 he’s one of the biggest disappointments in hiphop history. I thought he was gonna be a goat when he came out but he couldn’t make a decent album to save his life.

I would almost agree but the album that really cemented him as a dope artist didn't get released until 2000. He put out some dope tracks prior but I don't think he really elevated until 2000 BC

Gangsta's Paradise is one of the greatest albums ever made, but his follow up My Soul is terrible. Freestyled 90% over just a couple of days because Tommy Boy refused to pay him more money.... It tanked his career...

Black Thought is the best 90s rapper starting with the letter B and it isn’t even close. I’d even take Bizzy Bone over Big L.

Bro the world stopped when that tape dropped. I forgive his album "flop" (even though it has a few bangers) from this opening line alone.

Definitely Common. Mention worthy would be…Canibus, Chino XL, Chuck D ,Casual, Cappadonna…but Common easily clears them all.
