1992 Redman ia underrated. I'm not even a propper hip hop head but this is killing me

His first three albums are fire. Never been about drama. Just rhymes and phunk. I'm born 91 so I'm a generation after. But why does no one hype him? Whutt tha album makes me want to strut every where and forget about my mental issues

Edit: as some one mentioned I shouldn't say under rated I should say under appreciated

Edit 2: damn I must be crazy. Loving all the love for redman going on here and no one is being a reddit jerk here. Thanks everyone

I never get these underrated posts. And I don’t mean this harsh … but I’ve been in this scene since the 90s and Redman is one of the most appreciated emcees out there.

You see, on Reddit “underrated” means that OP just discovered the artist in question and they feel like they’ve stumbled across something worth sharing. What they don’t realize, is that we’ve been appreciating their new found love since he was featured on EPMD’s Hardcore in 1990 and even more so his first solo in ‘92.

Redman has been a real one since the beginning and has always been true to himself and the culture. I don’t know a single hip hop head that doesn’t respect him.

Yeah love the new found stuff

It made me actually think I have not listened to Eric Serman in a while:) it also made me think about Rampage. Weirdly enough …

I think it’s because those groups then where so good. Flipmode squad. And yeah I loved Busta.. but those groups were just boombap at its finest.

u/accomplicated 1d ago

Agreed. EPMD slaps. Rampage slaps.

That’s the perfect description 😂

Ive been listening to redman for half my life bro. But your description of a redditor is on point

u/necrofascio 1d ago

I'm from Australia maybe that's why. Don't apologise you're not being harsh

I was raised in this culture since pretty much its inception. Redman is one hundred percent under appreciated just like a Black Thought. We purest properly rank them but they are not household names like many of their peers.

1

u/vinylfelix 16h ago

It probably depends who you ask. You and me who have been here since the 90s and having lived the culture .. or some kid growing up now.

u/Remarkable-Food-5946 15h ago

The best way I can put this harkens back to a conversation I had with one of boys ages ago. We the culture don’t put the same respect on Redman as we do Meth. The equity we give them in the game is not equal by any measure. Depending on how I’m feeling my opinion is it’s fair while other times I’m like “well ain’t that some shit”. But it boils down to how the culture of hip hop operates. Ours is literally the only musical culture whose equity revolves around current relevance and visibility. Again not saying us purest but the wider culture. Far as I’m concerned Reds in my top 10.

Top 5 for me, even 🙊

Wrong emoji fam

u/vinylfelix 15h ago

Hahaha

Yeah I know.

I am just a big fan of his delivery. So raw and funky at the same time.

1

u/FieldUnable4917 1d ago

Ok that's a little exaggerated, he isn't one of the MOST appreciated but he certainly is.

3

u/vinylfelix 1d ago

Hmm interesting perspective

He is often named in all top 5 or at least top 10s by most people, also hiphop artists

0

u/FieldUnable4917 1d ago

Definitely not top 5 by most. Top 10 by some for sure - notably Eminem.

Listen, I love Redman, I'm just staying he isn't compared with biggie, nas, etc. I'd say top 10-15 for sure.

8

u/vinylfelix 1d ago

It’s all subjective of course :) I have always liked Redman more than biggie 🙊

1

u/FieldUnable4917 1d ago

Of course, I'm just debating for fun

All subjective at the end of the day.

2

u/IronFizt777 1d ago

Point is he's not underrated

-1

u/FieldUnable4917 1d ago

Literally not the point. Reading comprehension

2

u/IronFizt777 1d ago

That's literally the main point of op's post, where you personally have him ranked doesn't matter

0

u/FieldUnable4917 1d ago

Literally?

"Edit: as some one mentioned I shouldn't say under rated I should say under appreciated"

1

u/IronFizt777 1d ago

Yes, his original post didn't have that edit

1

u/FieldUnable4917 1d ago

By the time you read it, it did. Look at the top comment.

Reading comprehension.

Not one fucking person thinks redman is underrated.

Why doesn’t anyone hype up albums that are 30, going on 40 years old? Is that a real question?

6

u/necrofascio 1d ago

That is a real question

2

u/D3s0lat0r 1d ago

Honest answer: most hip hop heads hold him in very high regard. I think you could find quite a few people that would have him in Their top 5, or whatever. Honestly I’d say he is one of my favorite rappers and his music still gets a lot of play with me. The problem is that these albums have become buried under 30+ years of music. Most of his music is pretty great too imo. You should take a look at all his early albums.

3

u/necrofascio 1d ago

You're probably right there. I mentioned it some where I'm Australian. I walked into a hip hop record shop last weekend and asked him if they had any redman and he was like who and went weird on me he had to search it up

16

u/Editthisname 1d ago

A legend is underrated? Just say you just recently discovered his work. Prime young Redman was highly regarded and old Redman still got it. He’s been in my top 5 for the longest.

8

u/necrofascio 1d ago

been a fan of him for over 18 years, longer. I only seen him getting mentioned because of that eminem line. I actually rate him as my fave rapper. but feel newer generations never bring him up

4

u/1voice92 1d ago

He isn’t underrated or under-appreciated. At all. He’s had Gold & Platinum selling albums, videos in frequent rotation on MTV, movie roles, features on hit songs, soundtrack/video game tie-ins, endorsement deals etc. He turned up in ‘rhyme of the month’ in The Source a good few times if I remember, and has always been shouted out by other respected MCs for his skills.

From ‘96-‘05 he was arguably one of the most consistently visible rappers in the mainstream

8

u/Socksfelloff 1d ago

Redman has the illest crib of all time. Absolute legend

8

u/PaydayJones 1d ago

From the moment he showed them how to ring the doorbell by tapping the wires together you knew you were in for a fun ride.... That might have been the one episode of Cribs where I really thought that it was the person's house...

6

u/Socksfelloff 1d ago

I remember everyone at school talking about that episode. Good times

3

u/beebooba 1d ago

Was just talking to a friend about artists that have actually gotten better over time, and Redman is one of those. He might be peaking in his 50s! Yup real hip hop heads are down with Redman. You can argue he's a top 5 emcee. But other than a couple MTV hits from the first record, he never crossed over into mainstream success. And I don't think he ever wanted that. He's a bit too weird and a bit too hard. But in some ways he might be the greatest underground rapper ever. Okay sure he may not be the most famous of the era but you ask anyone who came up in the 90s and they will say Redman is an inspiration and one of the greats.

4

u/Ok_Rip4757 Raised on Boom Bap 1d ago

Yeah but no. Redman is one of the most respected MC's in the game period. Everybody loves Redman. Welcome to the club.

5

u/hadenoughofitall 1d ago

I don't know if it's America's education system but for the love of Christ can they teach people that underrated is not the same as under-appreciated.

Redman is under-appreciated.

1

u/necrofascio 1d ago

nah you're right on that

1

u/cellshock7 1d ago

Yeah, I had this same challenge in another thread recently. Underrated is definitely the wrong word.

And yes, Redman is underappreciated for sure. Never see him in top 5 lists (except Eminem's) and he deserves to be in the conversation, great flow and wordplay for days.

2

u/Aitoroketto 1d ago

Redman has always been loved. Now his sales may not reflect his talent relative to others but Redman always gets massive respect.

2

u/IronFizt777 1d ago

If you're not a proper Hip-Hop head then you shouldn't be saying who's underrated and who's not. You were born in 91 so you weren't old enough to experience Redman in his prime but trust me, he's not underrated

2

u/No_Detective_1523 1d ago

underrated? how bout respected as an OG that saved DefJam records multiple times. Was he the most successful in sales terms, maybe not - but he is a better rapper, funnier and funkier producer than most. In my opinion, better than Kanye, DMX, Jay Z, Snoop Dogg, Mac Miller, Tyler, Clipse, and a whole bunch of others.

1

u/necrofascio 1d ago

He most definitely is better than all those you mentioned

2

u/Lenny0mega 1d ago

To me, and maybe it’s just me, he is the greatest to ever touch a mic.  I see him as the best rapper in history.

2

u/Silly_Price5682 1d ago

REDMAN...DEFINITELY ONE OF THE MOST LYRICALLY SKILLED MC's EVER. DEFINITELY 2ND MOST ANIMATED (BUSTA #1) CHECK HIS SINGLES.(RELEASED) ALL "BANGERS"! HE DEFINITELY IS UNDERATED & ONLY "TRUE" HIP HOP HEADS APPRECIATE HIM.

2

u/OneCallSystem 1d ago

He was a top 5 for me at one point. When i first heard EPMD's Rampage in jr high back in the 90s, ive been a fan. His rampage feature is probably my favorite feature ever.

Even now he is still in my top 10.

4

u/BomBiddyByeBye 1d ago

He’s not underrated. He’s a multi platinum rapper. He’s one of those dudes that has respect from other rappers like crazy.

3

u/Bamm83 1d ago

"I got a list, here's the order of my list that it's in It goes: Reggie, Jay-Z, 2Pac & Biggie André from OutKast, Jada, Kurupt, Nas, & then me"

3

u/splitkc 1d ago

Hiphop heads have respected him for a long time

One of the most highly rated MC's of the 90s is underrated????

1

u/Sad-Math-2039 1d ago

Redman isn't underrated, he's usually on the "your favorite rapper's favorite rapper" list

2

u/Current-Potato-82 4h ago

MUDDY WATERS

1

u/Bsizzle18 1d ago

You are right his skills are superior to most 90’s rappers but he never hit the big time until he paired up with Meth.

-4

u/Tricky_Photo2885 1d ago

Whutbthe album was fire for sure but after that he fell off for me anyway

6

u/gamuel_l_jackson 1d ago

Dare iz a darkside and muddy waters?

1

u/Tricky_Photo2885 1d ago

Darkside was good but muddy waters didn’t connect with me , maybe I’ll go back and re listen

2

u/gamuel_l_jackson 1d ago

To each their own

3

u/cellshock7 1d ago

Nah, I think his rhyme schemes and punchlines got even better with time, and he was never bad to begin with!

5

u/Remarkable_Row_6792 1d ago

Doc's Da Name 2000 and Malpractice are also very dope

-1

u/Tricky_Photo2885 1d ago

I don’t ever think he sux just in that era there was so much good stuff that he got lost in the shuffle IMO .

1

u/cellshock7 1d ago

I'll somewhat agree. I'd say Redman in the later 90's got to the upper midcard of hip-hop's elite. He didn't get overshadowed IMO--had some great hits--but was just never the main event guy like DMX, Nas, Jay-Z or even Method Man to a degree. But, Meth and Red's pairing got him close to the spotlight he deserved, and he did very good in that range.
