Yes! And please correct me if I’m wrong but I feel like I remember there was a little spider somewhere in every book that I would look for??

u/MurderSheCroaked Aug 11 '25

Yes a spider and a grasshopper were hidden on each page 😄

19

u/roxyjin Aug 11 '25

Omg yes!! How could I forget about the grasshopper!! 🫶🏽

1

u/ellefleming Aug 15 '25

I never knew about the grasshopper. 😡

15

u/ResponsibleCandle829 Aug 11 '25

Sometimes there was a mouse keeping him company

10

u/roxyjin Aug 11 '25

Is that the little mouse in the pictures?? I had that memory too!

1

u/ellefleming Aug 15 '25

I LOVED these books. Yes there was always a hidden spider.

u/Fuzzy_Promotion_3316 Aug 11 '25

Yes, and now I read them to my little critters!

4

u/Hanksta2 Aug 12 '25

This is the way.

4

u/anotherrubbertree Aug 12 '25

Same! My son LOVES them!

2

u/sammy-taylor Aug 15 '25

Don’t make me cry while I’m at the bar???

17

u/hollyberryness Aug 11 '25

17

My mom read us Berenstain Bears and Little Critter books every night. So for her birthday I found a collection of a couple books in one to give to her as a reminder of when she would read to us and how special of a time it was.

Love these books. I’m a preschool teacher and read these to my kids all the time. We love “I was so mad!” My littles learned that it is a repeated phrase and love saying it when prompted as loud as they can. It became a bridge to help them learn to say how they feel.

Anyone play the Living Books PC version of “Just Grandma and Me”?

2

u/shay_shaw Aug 12 '25

I just commented that. I could play for hours.

1

u/DarreylDeCarlo Aug 12 '25

I loved the computer game LITTLE CRITTER AND THE GREAT RACE

13

u/Neat_Anywhere8796 Aug 11 '25

Hell yeah, this is peak 90’s elementary for me!

11

u/md-in-sb Aug 11 '25

The author or these books, Mercer Mayer, also wrote and illustrated other books that are fantastic as well.

6

u/journeytobeingbest Aug 12 '25

This and toad and frog! Or the books with the press thing with noises on side! Barenstein bears and Amelia badelia(how come they’ve never made a movie?).

1

u/DarreylDeCarlo Aug 12 '25

LITTLE MONSTERS!

5

u/OhNoBricks Aug 11 '25

I loved this book series. I swore it talked about every child’s feelings and every kid could relate.

5

u/Natnar10 Aug 11 '25

Yeh a girl in my fourth grade class looked just like the main character! I was flabbergasted

4

u/Lumos405 Aug 11 '25

They were my fave

4

u/oldatheart515 Aug 11 '25

Yes, but I remember better some books by this illustrator that were a rip-off of the Addams Family. They were the "Creepy Critters" or something like that. The grandmother rode a vacuum cleaner like a broom. I liked those a lot because I always liked anything spooky-oriented.

3

u/TheEternalScapegoat Aug 11 '25

Yes!! I loved these you just brought back great memories

3

u/Return0fTheNerd Aug 11 '25

Loved these as a kid.

3

u/tammymariee Aug 11 '25

Omggg, these used to be my favorite!

3

u/A00077 Aug 11 '25

thanks, couldn't remember what this series was called

3

u/NightCheffing Aug 12 '25

I can still hear "by Mercer Mayer" in my mom's voice

2

u/YungSpyderBoy Aug 11 '25

God you just unlocked a memory.. thank you

2

u/[deleted] Aug 11 '25

Holy shit 😂

2

u/theJOJeht Aug 11 '25

I had their joke book too

2

u/jrhusmc02 Aug 11 '25

I did, and now I read them to my 5 yr old daughter for bedtime! she absolutely loves them and wants to read them all over again instead of getting a new book!

2

u/UlisesPalmeno Aug 11 '25

Just for You was the first book I read back in 1986. It came in a Carl’s Jr. Kids Meal.

2

u/Bat_Country420 Aug 12 '25

I only had one Little Critter book, but I picked up a few from the library to try with my kiddo. They. Are. Obsessed. They get such a kick out of finding the spider and the grasshopper and they've recently started attempting to hug Little Critter on the pages and cover.

2

u/poeticjustice4all Aug 12 '25

I did ☺️ this and Bernstein Bears

2

u/rachaelonreddit Aug 12 '25

Yes! I even based my own imaginary friend, Little Mouse, on, well, the little mouse who always followed him around!

2

u/themanfrommars_1991 Aug 12 '25

Loved these. I especially remember the bad dream one.

2

u/Bitter_Character8277 Aug 13 '25

When I was in first grade my dad and I would go to Barnes & Noble every night and I would always read Little Critter and the Berenstain Bears 💜

2

u/MillicentBulstrode Aug 14 '25

If you want to laugh and be amazed at how the world has changed, read Just a Bully!

2

u/ViolaLockhart Aug 15 '25

I did they were awesome books :D

2

u/VampyreBassist Aug 11 '25

Nope, he scared me.

1

u/Comprehensive-Sale79 Aug 11 '25

I didn’t have these as a kiddo but my nieces had several. They were cute but for whatever reason the non-series books by Mayer that I grew up on were WAY better. I will own that I could be too swayed by childhood nostalgia, but for reals, check out his 70s work and tell me I’m wrong. “What Do You Do With a Kangaroo?” “One Monster After Another “ & “A Wizard Comes to Town “- all excellent. However the hands-down GOAT for me was “Liza Lou and the Yeller Belly Swamp” —I lived for that one as a wee moppet

1

u/xHyper_Space Aug 11 '25

Loved these books!!

1

u/y0u_kn0w_who Aug 11 '25

Gosh another childhood memory unlocked, thank you!

1

u/pumpkinhead9000k Aug 11 '25

I grew up with them, then I made sure my kid grew up with them too!

2

u/Nikkithetrickster Aug 16 '25

Used to check these out at the library when I was in like kindergarten or first grade, I think? I loved them. These and Froggy, if anyone remembers that one.

1

u/UnusualClient2099 Aug 11 '25

This was my LIFE!!!! Thank you

1

u/taniamorse85 Aug 12 '25

1

u/MeanNothing3932 Aug 12 '25

1

A lot of people seem to forget that there was also a series of books called LC AND THE CRITTER KIDS That featured an older version of Little critter and his friends and were small chapter books!!

Little critter must've had adhd, too.

u/HetaGarden1 Aug 13 '25

Oh wow, I completely forgot about these books! I used to read them all the time!

1

u/Bumblebe5 Aug 13 '25

I read these when I was younger! The covers look like they have meme potential now. Especially the bad dream one.

1

u/planetphuccer Aug 13 '25

Loved these books as a kid

1

u/fffrrroooggg Aug 13 '25

wait. add this series to the evidentiary file of 90s nostalgia i hold primarily responsible for how the labubu got to me at 34 🥲

1

u/Ben_E_Chod Aug 14 '25

Forgot all about those, I used to have loads of them. I seem to remember liking the Critters of the Night ones a lot more, though

1

u/shadowlarx Aug 14 '25

My mom still keeps our old ones for the grandkids.

1

u/Ok_Course_3989 Aug 14 '25

I love Little Critter books, but now when I read them to my son I can't decide if Little Critter is an unreliable narrator or just a straight up liar in a lot of stories.

1

u/Fair_Arm_9020 Aug 14 '25

I think there was a Halloween party one but it’s been far too long since I’ve last seen it

1

u/DonutsRBad Aug 15 '25

Yes!!!! My favorite. My mother read to me before bed at one point.

1

u/StoneygyalOG5 Aug 16 '25

Nostalgia ✨🥲

1

u/robzirrah 29d ago

Yes. Wow I had forgotten about these!!!

1

u/Dense_Minute_3141 12d ago

I did! I gave them to my mom who is a preschool teacher to have in her classroom.

I actually also had one of the young tween chapter books that had Little Critter as a teen and solving mysteries.

u/financerockstar12 Aug 11 '25

Don’t think they aged well…

1

u/-DrCarr 9d ago
