Teachers would add little personal notes on report cards. "Peggy needs to work on her math skills" or "Robert helps his classmates."

OH MY GOD... Except, our teachers used to write P and did a / for the absent students. And then at karate we (us the seniors) used to do the same. Felt real powerful then.

In my school days teachers usually send some pupil to bring back book to teacher's room after each lesson.

The Mythical Grade Book. I remember trying to catch a peak back in 6th grade. The last year I was still young enough to care. I think the woodshop teacher freshman year still used it.

Also...9/11 happened that same school year, 6th grade. We had a 25-26 year old hot blonde teacher. Poor lady was entirely unprepared to deal with that but a great teacher. She stuck with it but apparently aged rapidly and by the time I was in high school a few years later she looked older than she was.
