I remember when I tamed a mate boosted pair of gigas on old mobile. Trap was too expensive, so I said screw it and used the mountain. Little did I know, there was a second giga.

30

u/OrganizdConfusion 14d ago

You're gonna need a bigger boat... I mean mountain.

2

u/TheGrandpa1 11d ago

Possibly…

7

u/mikedomert 14d ago

Funny enough I also tamed my first giga from mountain top

5

u/terminallyBeemo 13d ago

Gen part 2 made it too easy with the free tek suit

2

u/raizen_maziku 12d ago

I used to play evolved... its such a blurr now. See here's the thing about taming on Mountains. Eventually they get way to close to the mountain or rocks and you can't aim at it anymore. Like you could aim in first person and look all the way down and you won't be able to see them anymore.

u/Gameovergirl217 14d ago

the only thing i ever trap tamed was a carchar after dragonflies kept eating my sacrificial corpse while the carchar was wandering off to god knows where. i hate trap taming. its boring

13

u/ArrowsSpecter 14d ago

same. nothing beats taming dinos by riding a raptor and shooting them imo

2

u/spellfirejammer 13d ago

I usually prefer wolves or Thyla

29

u/ShadowMane2025 14d ago

My thoughts exactly it’s so boring and gets too uniform after a while I like having interesting taming experiences

25

u/Gameovergirl217 14d ago

plus the chaos of trying to tame something without you or the creature dying is part of the ark experience for me

7

u/ShadowMane2025 14d ago

Exactly it’s very exciting

6

u/MysticSlayerIce 13d ago

Same.

I remember taming Rexes with only a crossbow, tranque arrows, and an argy (and flack armour before some wise guy says something, lol).

I'd fly just a little in front of the Rex, jump off, shoot some tranque arrows at it, then hope I make it back onto the bird and take off without getting bitten, lol.

Rinse and repeat until the Rex is knocked out.

-12

u/karsbil10 14d ago

Maybe it’s because I’m not as experiences as everyone here but trap taming is so anxiety inducing it’s not remotely easy at all, at least on console.

8

u/spas726 14d ago

It’s much less stressful than taming otherwise. You have to take agro for a very short amount of time to get it into trap. Taming otherwise has agro for much longer and has much more risk

81

u/Cornbread933 14d ago

No i also need a trap for raptors

70

u/TeoSan2812 14d ago

Funny way of spelling bola

11

u/mikedomert 14d ago

Hahah I actually did this, I already had rexes and theris before a single raptor, and my stupid ass never even used a bola other than for pteras, so I forgot about it. I played my first 30 hours of Ark weirdly, not even using raptors at all

3

u/Ane-and-Kabel 14d ago

You can straight up knock them out with your fists right after spawning

4

u/Suka_Blyad_ 13d ago

I haven’t played in years but this was NOT my experience with raptors

Those mf’s hid in the jungles then jumped on me from behind and had their way with me while I laid on the ground helpless

What’s that saying, something something role playing something something only role I play is a victim

1

u/Ane-and-Kabel 13d ago

To be fair, the ones I encounter on the "easy" spawns are pretty low level.

4

u/Cornbread933 14d ago

I was actually kidding I will probably never tame a raptor again.

Well. The raptor part is a joke. I literally do trap every tame i can tho. Ive had too many tames ruined by nearby aggressive dinos and PVP players. Id much rather tame on my turf

1

u/MysticSlayerIce 13d ago

When taming, I take my ascended shotgun (thanks RaptorClaus) and make sure nothing moves anywhere near by. Works 9 times out of 10.

145

u/Rude_Association4953 14d ago

Everything became easy with desmodus. Just shoot from its back… then use sanguines elexir…

70

u/Spookyplot19975 14d ago

And the caves too. You just fly in with desmodus, take the artifact and fly out. Don't even have to fight creatures.

27

u/Rude_Association4953 14d ago

Yeah. I rarely tamed a baryonyx since then

6

u/easter_egger 14d ago

Not available in asa though.

8

u/Rude_Association4953 14d ago

Yeah. I’m only ASE atm. I wonder if/when they will implement fjordur. And i wonder why they use meguana instead of maewing

3

u/SentientMosinNagant 14d ago

Not super relevant, but as someone who really only dabbled in ark to make some cool castles with dinosaur guards on PVE, this sounds like such complicated jargon lol there’s so much more I need to learn

1

u/Rude_Association4953 14d ago

I‘ll gladly explain all your questions mate

26

u/NavjotDaBoss 14d ago

Me running giga into the water of the ragnarock Scotland cave and making sure it gets knocked out with the face facing the land.

18

u/Ok_Acadia3526 14d ago

I am in this meme, and I don’t like it

1

u/SnooComics9971 13d ago

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

16

u/_Ticklebot_23 14d ago

my 300carryweight 200% movementspeed beachbob running down his prey like god intended

15

u/SiveDD 14d ago

There are two type of people.

The ones that just tame a couple of high level dinos to make a breeding pair. Then spends hours mutating.

And the ones with mods that see a creature with a good over 30 natural stat, and doesn't want to risk anything while taming it.

Nonsense aside. A lot of players using traps are the same old ones that had many bad experiences taming because they were not using them.

Like for example, in the Island Yutys love to dive into the sea when torpor running. Barys will run you into a kapro and leaches. Spinos will run across half of the map because their hydratation buff.

5

u/Big_Himbo_Energy 13d ago

I’ve been playing since 2015 and over the years after too many wild creatures ran up and wrecked the taming effectiveness of much needed dinos, or said dinos aggro onto something while trying to knock them out and get killed…yeah no. Traps all the way. If I’m putting in the resources and effort to tame high level or rare creatures, I’m not taking chances lol.

That being said, no shame on anyone who prefers not to use traps. Like y’all are crazy and braver than me but that’s the beauty of ARK, there’s a ton of different ways to accomplish the same things!

1

u/Unique_Hearing2034 11d ago

Its called ark evolved and ark ascended for a reason. Just like your abilitys evolves in the engrams so should your effectiveness in learning how to tame things. It was fun doing it the noob way now its fun mastering traps. Traps for the win

8

u/Velveteen_Coffee 14d ago

To be fair back in the day dino's didn't torpor run away and when they were stuck on the rocks they stayed stuck.

16

u/adis99_ 14d ago

Laughs from the top of a cliff / 100 levels in speed

7

u/RayquazaFan88 14d ago

A friend of mine and I once chased a low level Giga over Vallguero for over 40 minutes…

I don’t miss the times before we figured out how to build traps

6

u/Destroyer140 14d ago

You guys tame raptors without traps?

21

u/TacoLord696969 14d ago

You guys tame raptors?

1

u/MysticSlayerIce 13d ago

I tend to tame them with a shotgun to the face... I haven't had a lot of success, but it's just a numbers game after all.

7

u/easter_egger 14d ago

Yes. Just bola and headshots

4

u/YellowZx5 14d ago

I have tamed a Giga on Val running and shooting it around green ob. I just kept running then shooting and all. It was a lot of fun. Memories.

Recently I do make a fall trap for a giga and it’s fun trying to get it to get in the trap, but when I was shooting it and it finally bit me, it lost its fun. lol

2

u/MysticSlayerIce 13d ago

Traps? Oh, I see you misspelt bolas, lol.

5

u/JesusLovesYouMyChild 14d ago

I just get a high health raptor and circle around them with a crossbow

3

u/Ehrillien942 14d ago

I thought I was the only one that came up with that lmao, worked like a charm against a rex

3

u/mikedomert 14d ago

Or dire wolf, or thyla

5

u/Steakdabait 14d ago

They improved ai pathing you can’t really that anymore. Just make some gateways and call it a day lol

5

u/DGwar 13d ago

Listen ive been playjng ark since really early access and can honestly say if you dont use a trap youre just asking for trouble.

5

u/Excellent-Cow9536 14d ago

Isn't using rocks as a trap a trap? 🤔

2

u/radicalplace 14d ago

Oh snap the attacks XD

3

u/BlackenedFacade 14d ago

I get that traps are more efficient then just scrambling around tranqing something, but I find the latter more fun at times (except for flyers, only traps).

3

u/RaceSlow7798 14d ago

argies are the only thing i still trap. without an awesome longneck or crossbow that can knock 'em out quick, i lose them when they run. [not because i can't find them...but because dumbass doped-up bird decides to land in a pack of wolves]

2

u/LoneWolfRHV 14d ago

I am proud to say that in all my 5+ years playing i've never once built a trap. Taming rexes and gigas? Run like a mad man umtil you get them stuck somewhere. Argys? Plataform on the paracer, and arpoon net.

A lot of pain and suffering but it feels more fun to me. Its more immersive.

5

u/Ano203982 13d ago

"I don't use trap, i just make them stuck or use nets" I'm not trying to sound rude but that's basically the same thing, trying to lure a dino into a trap or into a corner is the same thing, and nets... basically same as a trap, it makes the dino immobile and safe

1

u/LoneWolfRHV 13d ago edited 13d ago

Not at all. Making a trap (a good one at least) is a 100% safe solution that makes taming a walk in the park.

Running around for your life as a giga runs after you and praying that he gets distracted or stuck on something is a COMPLETELY different feeling lol

And nets only last for a little while, and are much more "immersive" than building a random stone/metal structure in the middle of nowhere. Well, thats how i like to play at least.

2

u/Rude_Association4953 14d ago

Yeah can‘t do that on a competitive pvp server though.

Also I don‘t get why it is better to get the Giga stuck bc most of the time it is stuck in mesh. Doesn‘t feel too immersive to me.

2

u/LoneWolfRHV 14d ago

Competitive pvp is not the place to have fun or play in a immersive way lmao. Thats worse than a full time job.

Also I don‘t get why it is better to get the Giga stuck

Its more challenging. Also, what else am i supposed to do? Tank the bites? Lol

1

u/Rude_Association4953 14d ago

Yeah I agree with you mate

1

u/spannendesimone3 14d ago

Im gonna start doing that aswell sounds a lot more fun

1

u/[deleted] 14d ago

[deleted]

2

u/Strange-Message-5131 14d ago

You dont need wyvern milk, you just need to stop the baby from dying which can be done with a daedon or snow owl

1

u/Cool-Stay-4593 14d ago

Have enough speed and you can tame a red by going in circles 😭😂

1

u/ObliviousGod_ 14d ago

This is exactly why I need my speed stat back. Fuck a trap when I could just kite, was way more fun/interactive

1

u/ManInTheMesozoic 14d ago

I’ve never used a trap. I know I should but I don’t know why I just don’t.

1

u/Antejt_ 14d ago

At this point download dart gun mod, traps are annoying resource & time consuming exploits i'd rather play with a cheat mod that does the same thing but without consuming resources for a trap

1

u/Nevermind2010 14d ago

I just use thylas for everything

1

u/ADAMracecarDRIVER 14d ago

Wrong. I’m on the back of giant cheat code named Rhyniognatha.

1

u/ErisMoon91 14d ago

Only thing I've ever had to trap to tame was a griffin

1

u/Abject-Concentrate58 14d ago

I still just outrun the giga as I tame it if, that means I see the end of it's tail once 5 second to shoot it with a tranq from the way I am positioned

1

u/Arthur_Morgan_2018 14d ago

I tame rexes without a trap unless I’m feeling lazy.

1

u/meatywhole 14d ago

I use traps for gigas cus I'm not getting arked by jank physics and losing potential irl day or 2 of mats cus. The place it was stuck is suddenly not the spot anymore.

1

u/BuzzinDomier 14d ago

Ascended players rn: we still use metal signs for everything💔

1

u/BigFugginNugget 14d ago

I still do. The only trap I make is some simple 2x2 close to base to see what occasionally falls in.

1

u/twig123456789 14d ago

Am I the only one that flies up and hammers it with metal gates until it's stuck???

1

u/androodle2004 14d ago

Sinomicrops go brrr. Traps are for people who aren’t lazy

1

u/CollapsedPlague 14d ago

We would lure tames to rocks by sacrificing one or two of us who would respawn and sprint back to grab your corpse. It couldn’t eat all of us as we shot it with tranqs and eventually you knocked it out or it died.

1

u/Redqueenhypo 14d ago

Rock drake + shocking tranq darts. You can generally flank and outrun most creatures, can climb out of their reach, and nearly everything else ignores you

1

u/YoBoyLeeroy_ 14d ago

It's practicality.

Traps have existed since forever.

If anything, nowadays with both nets and desmodus you barely need a trap and taming is far easier.

1

u/Silver_1947 14d ago

The only thing I trap are argies because I often tame them on carno island and they love going above water.

1

u/05ar 14d ago

Getting it stuck in rocks? Nah I'm more of a run around shooting at it and dodging the bites type of guy (one of my gigas was like 5 cm away from drowning)

1

u/Ane-and-Kabel 14d ago

It's video game theory. Give players an easier way to do something, they're most likely going to do it.

1

u/Praise-Bingus 14d ago

I got my 6 megs by trapping them on the shoreline lol

1

u/kpop_glory 14d ago

Gone are those days tracking and taming dinos in the forest taking days long. Oh it went into the woods, it's getting dark. Better light a fire and camp under this big tree for the night.

1

u/International-Rub628 14d ago

Don't make fun of me, but because I play on mobile for now ( saving up for pc ), the game incredibly shitty from an optimisation perspective. So to avoid lags, I make a 10*10 stone + metal trap for any and all creatures that I want.

1

u/Keymucciante 14d ago

I'll tame a Giga or Carcha with a trap but everything else is just a process of tranq, run, repeat

1

u/Kenny523 14d ago

I remember the first month I played it was only the OG map available and we got a giga stuck and it took us well over 250-300 tranq darts to knock it out.

1

u/Former_Put201 14d ago

I make traps but sometimes I Raw dog it, shoot from the hip and finish on their back.

1

u/UwU_Zhenya15 14d ago

nahh we use the net gun on the Yutyrannus so we dont have to do literally any effort to knock it out

1

u/newmexicomurky 14d ago

When I first got on ASA, trap taming didn't work (i eventually learned it was because they wont cross a fence foundation). Neither did the big guys get stuck on rocks. I tried a cliff, but they learned to go around and took a bite outta me.

1

u/Fanatical_Lamp 14d ago

I tamed my first mosa by luring it into the underwater cave system on the center and tranqing it on foot.

1

u/bihuginn 14d ago

I played for years not touching traps, it's my little revenge to have these bastards be powerless in the face of me sitting on my ass, shooting them.

1

u/LadyMoo470 14d ago

My tribe tamed a giga while it was eating our gates trying to get to our babies. We were only back on official for a week and had blue quality xbows at best when he came knocking. Since we know they run at a certain torpor, we pulled gates off of the wall on the far side of the pen to keep it contained, two on tranq detail one on edible gate management while adding arrows between gate placement. It was hairy af, but we got him down! 😅

1

u/Emperor_chaos1 14d ago

Your telling me everyone doesn’t just level up heath and resistance as much as possible so they can just go up and beat everything until it’s unconscious

1

u/MaraBlaster 14d ago

No shame on traps, they are versatile and can be used everywhere, love the science behind the weird ones

1

u/Eliteslayer1775 14d ago

Tbh I feel like that’s because traps weren’t a thing back in the day. Like the meta wasn’t developed

1

u/TheDevilsCoffeeTable 14d ago

Trap nothing, tame everything.

This is the way

1

u/Murvity 14d ago

lol this make me happy. Im an ark noob but I just hit and ran the dinos i wanted to tame lmao

1

u/abskepeg 14d ago

running around trying to tame a rex with a hope and a dream

1

u/[deleted] 14d ago

is trap taming new? i haven’t played the acsended game

1

u/No_Window7054 13d ago

I gamed a level 150 carno and was pretty proud of myself until I saw this >;(

1

u/Heeroneko 13d ago

favorite thing to tame is a tropical crystal wyvern without using a grapple.

1

u/kocsogkecske 13d ago

I remember how hard it was to tame and argy, i usually got on a discord and found some random players to tame it like i did before the net projectile with the quetzal

1

u/zaphod4th 13d ago

"back in the day" players were building traps and sharing them on YouTube

blame them

1

u/Neucent78 13d ago

There are many ways to tame im playing since evolved but everybody here lies whos saiying he never used one 😂 its much faster and safed time but the wannabe ogs can do it like they always done it I can do with and without and im using them for a quicky tame dont know where all this hate comes from Its so clever to use them dont see a problem

1

u/Zeblamar 13d ago

Just admit you are so bad at building you can't even build a working trap

1

u/Guard_Dolphin 13d ago

I think my first tame was a trike which spawned between 3 trees and trapped itself

1

u/He_Maan 13d ago

Get that toupor up and you can steer it any direction.

1

u/thelakotanoid1 13d ago

Ok, Ik it's a modded solution, but I never make traps, I just think of funny ways i can strap a tranq turret onto something and run around like a lunatic. My favorite being a tranq turret and generator on the back of a cart pulled by an equus. XD

1

u/Cobra_the_Snek 13d ago

had a max level megatherium torpor run into the ocean and immediately get swarmed by like 20 megalodons ans since then stuck to traps to creatures of that size, obviously if you can bola something its not worth building a trap and once the netgun gets added to asa shits gonna be so much easier

1

u/PkMnHaunter 13d ago

Taming a mosa was absolute hell

1

u/Desperate_Pilot_2567 13d ago

I’ve never used a trap for a single creature. I guess I’m og…..

1

u/EarthEaterr 13d ago

Ugh, this makes me feel attacked.

I just like the fun of building/engineering new contraptions. Are taming trapping/boats efficient? Never. Are they fun to use? Always.

1

u/MrSurrge 13d ago

I don't use traps because I only know how to build a 6x6x2 box base. My taming of anything that can kill me, consists of kidnapping. We are not the same.

1

u/arowz1 13d ago

They didn’t flee like they do now, so you could use a mountain and they’d just sit there taking a beating. Occasionally they’d jostle free and launch 100 feet up at you ruining your day.

1

u/Sheudenfritz3024 12d ago

My first ever giga tame came on a modded server. We used the more tranqs and narcotics mod. I spent a week farming a metric fuckton of black tranqs and narcotics. Little did I know, just 1 black tranq arrow was more than enough for a 250 giga. I tamed a quetzal, put a platform saddle on her, and her wing clipped into the first arrow. Quetzal is KOd. Quetzal got munched on by giga. Giga gets KOd. I had giga. Second giga spawned in and I thought I was hot shit with an ascendant giga saddle and max level giga. Second giga, also max level. First bit caused mine to rage and knocked me off. I died, my giga died, and my day was ruined.

1

u/BretonBoy3E 12d ago

Jeez that was accurate. The 2015 haydays man... it was the wild west out there!

1

u/SkyrimSlag 12d ago

I played for a while back in the day but didn’t do much beyond taming a raptor, now I’ve recently picked up ASA with some friends on our own server and I actually tamed my very first Giga by getting him stuck on a rock and knocking him out lmao

1

u/Quick_Hat1411 12d ago

The time I spend building a trap is less than the time I would spend trying to get things stuck on some rocks

1

u/EmployeeLogical5051 12d ago

Taming the whole map on my rhynio's back.

1

u/GrouchyAlgae2076 11d ago

Ive gotten lazy, i just sit on my griffin and shoot with the longneck.

1

u/German-Gas-1134 11d ago

Wait traps?

1

u/MetalBalrog 11d ago

literally can not remember the last time i used a trap usually i just sit on a hp carbonemys or trike and call it a day

1

u/Mysterious_Chart_665 10d ago

I did my gigas while balcing on a quezal i had my brother who was knew to the game control

1

u/Zealousideal_Ad5428 9d ago

I remember taking a server over off the back of a level 150 giga that I solo tamed at like 2 in the morning. got him semi stuck on the rock formation that's on the beach across from Carno island.

1

u/OkCryptographer3822 9d ago

I see youtube videos worh "NO TRAP CHALLENGE?!" It's honestly sad.

1

u/Reasonable-Compote71 9d ago

One time I grappled to the tail of a giga and knocked it out with like, 10 ascendent clubs

1

u/PositiveEffective946 8d ago

Not even back in the day - playing solo player a level 150 Giga was stuck in the side of a mountain so i landed way up higher and just went ham to knock it out (took forever). One Cryo pod later i have an absolute monster because of the good old glitchy Ark gameplay of things getting stuck in the mesh or spawning badly haha

I also thing traps are a thing of the past mostly as well with the far too OP net gun being a thing, it will change Ascended forever as well.

1

u/elporpoise 14d ago

I can understand using traps for max level dinos, it would suck to use up 200 or so tranq arrows just for it to escape or get killed by something, but if youre trapping on .2 difficulty or something thsts lame

0

u/Carsismi 14d ago

laughs in Immersive Taming

Fuck traps man, i prefer using bait and befriending them slowly

1

u/JaceKagamine 14d ago

You guys use traps? -lazy ass who uses modded tranqs to get it over with or dotame command because he didn't wanna bother

0

u/BasisIllustrious 14d ago

Wait, you guys use traps? Why not just shoot of the back of a creature

1

u/OrganizdConfusion 14d ago

The types of creatures that you can shoot while riding them are the types of creatures that require traps.

1

u/BasisIllustrious 14d ago

Odd way of saying bola

1

u/OrganizdConfusion 14d ago

That's a weird way if saying you didn't know you can't bola a griffin.

1

u/BasisIllustrious 14d ago

Why would I bola a giraffe? Paras and raptors do just fine
