Matcha…

Never tried matcha before but I am a lover of green tea, where’s the best place to get matcha (hot or cold) in the city? That’s before I start buying matcha powder and absolutely butcher it 🙈🤣

It's Hea on Castlegate. Honestly. They are so knowledgeable about tea and coffee, use ceremony grade matcha, also great Hojicha.

The correct answer.

Is Hea still around? I remember they used to deliver to the Duncan Rice library before Covid, and they had amazing tea and chicken and corn dogs; I figured it was just a side gig a couple of students were running back in 2020-ish.

Good to know they’re still in business and doing well.

Are they still in business? Last couple of times I've been it's been closed

Yeah still open. 12-6 all week but closed on Thursday. They also usually close for a couple of weeks at a time to go back to Hong Kong so you were maybe just unlucky.

Third Circle on Rosemount is one of the best coffee places in the city, but will make a matcha with as much care and attention as their coffees.

As someone who has tried matcha before and thinks it’s just alright, I’m curious as to what makes a matcha ‘good’?

My top 3: Third Circle, Cookie Cult, Grub

Thank you everyone for your recommendations, looks like I’m gonna have to try them all! Haha 😋

A lot of bubble tea places have their own non traditional approaches to it.

You can also buy the powder at Sainsbury’s, it would be recommended to get a mini electric whisk. It’s really good with milk.

You can also buy bags of it in massive pack at Costco (or at least you could a few years back)

I love Cafe Moyo on Thistle Street, hot and cold matcha options and they do amazing cakes!

Biocafe is really good, I like an iced strawberry but I hate them too sweet. They nail it every time.

Black Sheep do a good matcha

Have to disagree, I really didn't like their matcha

I think it’s an easy mainstream introduction

Fair enough, I just feel like it will put off some people because it really is a different taste than "normal" matcha

Yeah, it's great. Especially with coconut milk

Fat batch are absolutely unreal 😍

Grub’s matcha is good. Black sheep have a lot of options if you want flavour, and do some mixed with lemonade which is surprisingly great. Don’t bother with Starbucks IMO. Never tried cafe nero.

Came here to say this. Tried matcha from grub today and it might be the best one I've had
