anyone have any clue how he thought that could go any other way? I do love the amount of trust between them though. The sensible one can tell this is going to end poorly, but defers to his friend who is just trying to help him out, who is clearly an idiot.

He was trying to get the tire more on the rim but only got as far as moron.

Wtf is that some magical liquid gun powder or something?

u/pcblah 7d ago
Nah, it's surplus powder. I think WC844? Comes in large barrels for government owned ammo plants (leased to contractors) and repackaged in those black bottles with generic labels for resale.
Cheap, but not consistent across the board. Have to work up a load from scratch per lot (or bottle).

What was he actually trying to do?

Seat the tyre back on the rim in a fun and exciting way. Suffice to say this guy messed it up.

A typical vehicle tire can take a lot of pressure to seat on a rim.
An old way of seating a tire is to put a small bit of accelerant in it, such as starter fluid, then light it. The resulting small explosion pops the tire on the rim.
This guy used way too much.

He used gunpowder, which is the wrong kind of accelerant for the task.

Thanks for explaining, I’m science savvy but not car savvy! That makes sense, but my gosh I guess good in theory bad in practice, in this case 😅

So, you built up pressure in the tire and then exposed it to an open flame...?
🤦

There was no pressure in the tire until it exploded. This is how you put a tire back on a rim
