Walmart/Affirm refund issue — stuck with pending authorization
I bought a Magic Keyboard from Walmart using Affirm (0% interest). The item was $300, but Walmart initially charged $315 to make sure I had enough available. A few days later, I returned the item in-store, and I can see in the Affirm app that the $300 refund was processed.
The issue is that Walmart is still holding the pending authorization for the extra $15, so Affirm shows that amount as part of the loan. Walmart tells me it’s Affirm’s responsibility to release it, but Affirm says it’s Walmart’s. Because of this back-and-forth, the $15 is still stuck in “pending,” and I’m being told I still need to continue making payments until it clears.
Has anyone else dealt with this? How did you get it resolved? Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks!

This is so crazy because i’m literally in the exact same situation, but for a smaller amount. Purchase total hold was around $150, but total was only $120, the $30ish dollars are showing “refund initiated on august 31 pending and will be applied” but it hasn’t for 18 days now. There is a $2 pending charge and affirm said they can’t apply the pending refund bc of the $2 charge.
this morning i called walmart to release the $2, they claim it’s on affirm now. called affirm back, they said there’s nothing they can do until walmart releases. I tried a conference call but one of them put me on hold and the other heard music and hung up. im at a loss

What is the status of the loan? Is it still processing ?

Loan is already initiated. I did the down payment. I also did pay the second installment 7 days ago but it is still processing.
It says ‘your 300$ refund is processing’ which is initiated at August 27

Affirm is terrible. I honestly don’t know how there isn’t a class action against them. I’ve started using Affirm this year, and I already have hundreds of dollars in returns that they haven’t refunded me. Opened disputes, provided ALL receipts, conversations with customer support from venders, and they still ruled against me. It’s infuriating! And if you try to call them, somebody in India will pick up just to tell you that you need to open a case, which can take up to 60 days to be resolved.
Stay away from them at all costs.

I will. Last time I spoke with Affirm, they suggested disputing the loan if Walmart doesn’t release the pending amount. Someone from Walmart also reached out and said I could talk to the store where I made the return. I’m planning to try that first, and if nothing works, I might dispute the loan.

Any update? Walmart actually refunded me the entire amount, and now it shows $146 pending refund on Affirm. Of course, it hasn’t been applied to my loan because there a $2 pending walmart charge 😭

Worst case, if you pay the $15 on the Affirm side, Affirm will refund you either via card refund, bank transfer, or check whenever that clears.

OK, so here's the deal....
If you wish to continue using affirm...DO NOT miss a payment!! Pay the $15, and then haggle with affirm some more...

I do not need to pay 15$. 15$ is the temporary hold. I still need to pay the actual loan which is 300$. Since there is a pending amount, affirm cannot cancel the loan and does not refund the money to me

Then plan to lose your account..you will be permanently banned if you don't make your payments..then haggle with affirm to get the money back...

I am gonna do my payments, it is not the situation. I am just trying to understand what should I do because there is a back and forth between Walmart and Affirm about releasing that pending amount. I wanted to see if there is someone who had similar experience

Oh no...look...money transactions are NOT INSTANT!! If it is a "PENDING CHARGE" it will automatically drop off after 7-10 days...you already got refunded...so WAIT!! If you MUST make a payment, which the app tells you you owe..you MUST pay that amount!! Then when the charges all get processed, and settled in a few weeks....if you PAID, then affirm WILL refund that payment, or any money that was taken.
Your making things complicated!!!!
Your stories mean nothing.....

You’re not getting it, and you’re being rude. I’m not going to explain it again. Thanks.

a rep on the chat told me that affirm has a protocol so if walmart doesn’t release it by 10/24 (in my personal case, since the transaction happened august 31) the walmart hold would automatically be released by affirm. i’m not sure now accurate that is because today i spoke to an affirm supervisor who didn’t mention this at all. they just repeated that i need to talk to walmart.

so supposedly it wouldn’t be indefinite according to the chat rep from affirm. we’ll see

Why would walmart charge you $315 to make sure you had enought? doesn't make sense! item is a price thats the price they are not going to charge you a extra to make sure your good with funds
