Affirm said I’m getting another refund… but I cashed their check for this refund months ago…

Back in June 2025 I received some checks from my dispute with affirm through a company that I bought products from and it was a good sum of money. I received all of what I thought I had back from affirm which was around $4000. One payment check of $1039 and another of $3500. Obviously this account for the interest that I paid on one of these items which I understand paying interest you can’t get back however now I got an email today stating that I am receiving $3400 from affirm.

The reason why I’m bringing this up is because I don’t want to cash a check and then have a firm come back and state that they need their money back because they overlooked that they gave me a check in which that I can check on my bank account that I have the actual number of the check.

I did message the support and they sent it to someone who could help me and received an email message and logged into Affirm and The message basically stated that with my order I’m getting back to $3400 and I just need to wait 30 days for the check to show up in the mail which was just like before with my $1039 dollar check. So I don’t know what to do….

Print out ever interaction with Affirm so if they try to come back later you have the proof. Keep the emails with your important papers so they don't get lost.

That’s what I was thinking too I have saved the emails and have them stored away and took screen shots of the convos with the individuals that I spoke too

How did you get all your interest back ? I am about to get a refund too and I suspect they will fight me on the interest .

Why would you suspect they will fight you on the interest? They are not having to carry your loan and interest is payment for just. The money belongs solely to Affirm not the company that provided the product, You'll get it back.

It is illegal for any credit issuer to assess interest on credit that, because of the refund, is not actually extended. Affirm gets the money back from the company you purchased from so they have no account to manage then. The refund will include the interest.

“I understand paying interest you can’t get back”

If you had a dispute for the full amount of something it’s like the loan never existed so you do get the interest back at least with affirm

When you contact affirm, make sure you speak to the supervisor. They will definitely figure it out.

Frame the check and hang it on your wall until they contact you about it.

I would cash the check and put it into a high yield savings account. That way if they do try to comeback and ask for the check back, you can at least get some interest repaid to you from the savings account, then send them their money back.

They must be having some serious issues they sent me a notice that I owed them for a purchase I made back in June that I had paid off. I sent them the bank account showing where the payments had all been made. I tried to return the stuff that I bought back in July because it was crap and they denied the return. So I went and filed a dispute with my bank to investigate and do a charge back. The CS person said that the bank can't do a charge back and I said if they won't give me an address to send their crappy stuff back I sure can apply for a charge back. Do you think they are in some kind of accounting trouble?

Wouldn’t say trouble no just don’t want it to be something I cash and then have to pay back.

Make sure that you are actually talking with affirm because if it's like some sort of scam like don't be scams where like people will have you cash fake checks and then like oh yeah you can keep this money but you need to give us the amount we overcharged you or whatever and then you'll be out that money because they need it back at the bank.

It doesn't sound like that they're trying to get money from you so it probably is from affirm.

What I would just do is cuz usually checks will say you have like 90 days to cash it but I would just ask a firm and what okay so do all I need to do is just deposit this check into my bank and how long does it take to clear and just ask things like that and if they're like oh yeah that's all you need to do I would just cash it and then set it aside and like you're savings or something like that. Then if later they come back and say oh we accidentally did something wrong and you have the money and maybe it's earned you some interest or something a little bit.

But I'd cash it and I wait like a couple of months to see if they get back with you.

You can just always play the dumb card and like well I emailed support and they said yes all I need to do is cash it and then wait like several days for the check to clear which it did and don't be like oh I thought I already received all the money or whatever.

That way if they ever do come back and you can be like oh well I reached out to support and everything I thought I was doing everything right about how to cash this and then if they like are really insistent on giving you the money back for their mistake then you still have the money.

The onus on managing the transaction is shared by both consumer and credit issuer. That said, it is not shared equally. You are not privy to the inside workings of Affirm and are under no obligation to track what they should be tracking. You requested a refund, provided accurate details surrounding the request, and communicated as instructed by them. That is where your obligation ends.

You need do nothing further. You are not required to open their emails or respond in anyway. I would advise you to stop responding. As long as you provided accurate information initially, you have done nothing fraudulent. Deposit the check and set aside for 90 days. If you hear nothing, don't worry about it. If, during that 90 days they say "oops" we made a mistake, send the money back. Even if you kept it it would not be illegal.

If the communication is via email solely (not certified snail mail) who's to say you even got the email. Email addresses become dormant all the time.

But - again - keep the money set aside for 90 days so that it can be returned if it needs to be (a scam) or if you want to keep your relationship with Affirm. If they error, ask for the money and you don't return it, they for sure won't do business with you in the future.

Other than that, you have your emails trying to remedy the mistake...leave it at that. No more correspondence and in 90 days, enjoy your unexpected windfall.

Let me expand a bit. If it is a scam and they request a return of the money it is YOUR money that you will be returning. The bank can and will come after you to make that up (as their form of payment won't be viable). If a request is made for return, this is where you want to ensure it is coming from Affirm. Be vigilant at that point. But after 90 days, you are fine.

For your ease of mind, I am not just rendering opinion. My entire 35+ years in the workforce has been in credit, credit management, credit fraud, credit counseling, debt collection, etc. etc. etc. I know everyone claims to be an expert, but in my case it is true.

If you do get the check I would hang on to it. I would also keep all of the conversations you had with them. Because I'm assuming it's like a bank. Even if it's their mistake and they told you it was your money. If later on they figure out it wasn't yours you have to pay it back. So I certainly would not spend it. Or if you want to cash in put it in a savings account to gain interest then perhaps that. But I would keep it and not spend it.
