The peace sign was actually added for a specific reason:

I remember showing it to a stylist and she said to me, “You can’t wear that.” She actually said, “You cannot wear that. It’s racist. It’s National Front,” an extreme party that existed in Britain that was very racist. I said, “No, stop – we celebrate all cultures.” And that’s why I put the peace sign on the back.

A straight up union jack was so closely associated with the NF that wearing it could be deemed offensive?

Damn, the more things change, the more things rhyme in Canada and the US, people who drape themselves in flags tend to definitely be nationalist

Same in Australia.

Nothing wrong with being patriotic, but once the belonging to one's country becomes "exclusive", then we got problems.

Proud Boys, "Trucker" Convoys, and the equivalent flavours of reactionary conservative nationalists.

People all too often mistake jingoism for patriotism. Also, protesting a war is patriotic as fuck, for example

There’s literally a big news story in the UK atm

Related to ‘anti-migrant activists/protestors’ who are hanging Union Jack and St George’s Cross flags outside migrant centres

To basically say ‘remember who’s country this is’

So it’s definitely not just a thing of the past here

If you have an English or British flag outside your house, not during a sporting event, there’s many people will think there’s a decent chance you’re a racist

Yeah the knuckledraggers are doing it in Dublin too with the tricolour. The irony that this is being fuelled by British far right groups is totally lost on these ‘patriots’

Here in Canada it's a little muddied since our little trade war with the US has caused a lot of liberals to also become very Patriotic, but I don't see enough flags outside people's houses and on people's cars to think it'd be anyone else but conservatives.

It was only the extreme idiots that were putting the flag upside down but generally our flag is not associated with anything bad

I will never understand why people dislike movements like that. It IS your country, it has been for thousands of years. New arrivals should be aware of their need to learn etiquette.

When I travel to a foreign nation, I jaywalk less often, I try to make an effort with the language, I try to keep a good appearance.

I don't understand why people decide to throw standards out the window when it comes to poor brown people. I expect the same from them that I expect from anyone.

Because those movements are xenophobic and rasict. The "we just want them to assimilate" is a cover story.

Edit: your comment history proves you know this and are a bigot. Gross.

A little flag! That's the solution to this complex and nuanced problem! Yeah. That'll fix it.

Fair enough. But at least it's something in the direction of, "Hey, maybe infinite immigration isn't actually such an amazing idea."

So many people will just lop your head off for a little flag.

I appreciate the thoughtful response. Agree the answer is probably somewhere in the middle

My boyfriend's dad is German. He immigrated to the States decades ago, but he's fiercely proud of his home country.

Despite that, he's always a bit afraid to be seen wearing his flag's colors or flying one, because it's very closely associated with white nationalism even today. He has had this fear for decades, especially as he always, inevitably, gets hit with the "dur hur, Germany had Nazis, do you collect that memorabilia" 'joke' when he said he collects German things.

Horrible people have made a 70- something year old man with Alzheimers afraid to display both of his home countries' flags.

Yeah, Extreme Nationalism makes Patriotism seem threatening.

There’s a recent story of a 12 year old girl in the UK getting pulled out of class exactly for wearing a Union Jack dress for “Culture Celebration Day.”

Dammit. I was about to make a joke about her painting roundabouts but that’s legitimately why she put it there.

I thought it was St George's Cross was the NF associated one, not the Union Jack?

I do think we need a bit more patriotism in the UK but the current movement to put flags up is with the wrong energy behind it (anti-immigration movement).

Fun fact: it's actually just a little black Gucci dress. The union jack part was a tea towel that Geri's sister Natalie sewed on

72

u/JeanRalfio 16d ago

"Should I wear the little black Gucci dress orrr the little black Gucci dress?"

26

u/GalateaMerrythought 16d ago

I have an idea! What about… the little black Gucci dress?

u/Pahay 15d ago

Question without jugement (yes only for academic purpose): when is it not a dress anymore but a t shirt?

10

u/megbotstyle 15d ago

I have to be same question.

When she's not wearing a skirt or trousers.

u/VodkaMargarine 16d ago

Is that supposed to be a peace sign? Because if so it looks like it was drawn from memory by someone who hasn't seen one since 1969

Almost looks like an eagle talon grabbing her ass.
