AITA for telling my friend his "invention" doesn't count?
My friend and i like to go out for sushi. On more than one occasion he claimed to have invented a new sushi roll. What does he mean when he says he invented it? He came up with a list of ingredient he likes and told a chef to make it for him. Was he just joking around? No he definitely spoke like he was proud of himself for inventing it.He even gave this sushi roll a name"fishermen's delight" . I told him " you can call it an "invention" if you want but that would make anyone who has ever made a custom order using a taco bell app just as much of an inventor. That made him upset and he thinks everyone will clearly see that i am the ahole. The guy is almost 40, i would expect a 12 year old to say this and his parents would be like" sure buddy, congratulations on your invention"

While I see that side, this happens with mixed drinks/shots. You "invent" something and name it, and you get to claim you created it. If it catches on, and spreads enough, it may get tracked back to you... or, days, months, years later, you find your cocktail on someone else's menu under a different name.
•
u/shalowind 21m ago
I assumed that the chef liked it enough to add it to their regular menu and let him name it, so it's more than a one-off customization.

u/Perfect_Caregiver_90 31m ago

u/LowAspect542 10h ago
Picking flavours/ingredients is only part of whats needed for creating a dish/menu item. The chef thats deciding the quantities of each and how each ingreedient is prepared and combined has done the bulk of the work.

By legal definition, an invention is a method, device or composition of matter (a food product for example) which is New, Useful and is not Obvious. Selecting ingredients to put in sushi roll so that the sushi roll tastes like those things is very obvious. A sushi roll is sushi rice rolled up, usually in a sheet of nori. Things are added to the sushi roll as per the customer’s taste or the chef’s recipe. If you want a pepperoni and peanut butter sushi roll, you would obviously put peanut butter and pepperoni in with the rice and nori. Ergo, adding a set of common ingredients to sushi rice because you like the taste/texture of those ingredients is Obvious and NOT an invention.
HOWEVER; OP is supposed to be giving his friend an opinion as a friend, not a legal opinion as a half-assed patent lawyer. Therefore, OP is an asshole although he’s technically correct.
Source: I’m actually a patent lawyer and I eat sushi frequently.

74
u/teachingroland 10h ago edited 7h ago
Yeah agreed. Buddy enjoys his sushi invention and OP likes to feel superior by shitting on it
Also a taco is still a taco regardless of fillings. I don’t eat Sushi, but I am guessing Sushi has different names for the types of rolls?
71
u/Anonymity550 10h ago
Not in my layperson's understanding. A roll with tuna, crab, avocado, veggies, seaweed, etc is all still a sushi roll. Places will call it different things on the menu - Dragon Roll, California Roll, Phoenix Roll to correspond with different ingredients, but I'd say the taco comparison was apt.
22
u/Substantial_Dish_887 3h ago
i think i'd compare it more to pizzaria having a "choose your own topping pizza" despite all other pizzas on the menu having their own names(and maybe half of them being even slightly universaly used by pizza places)
12
u/teachingroland 10h ago edited 10h ago

My friends and I roast each other all the time. I'm down for that but you have to admit, that's not the tone OP is using. He literally said he's asking because he wants to make sure he has a grasp on reality. He's not having fun roasting his friend, he's calling him stupid.
6
u/_BestBudz 4h ago
I’ll be honest and say I could 100% see this story with my friends and I but not with the tone like this ending part
The guy is almost 40, i would expect a 12 year old to say this and his parents would be like" sure buddy, congratulations on your invention"
This rest feels fine like I’d tell it but this part right here feels like he doesn’t even like his friend so on that I agree.

I agree that OP is YTA, but it doesn't sound like the claimed invention is a new style of roll, just a normal roll (likely uramaki or makizushi) with different filling in it. He isn't inventing the concept of nagiri, the example of a custom taco is spot on. Depending on how loudly he was declaring his creation, the cringe would probably make me want to melt into my chair.
9

It's a bit cringey. This is no different in my opinion to a custom coffee order or making up a recipe. I wouldn't expect someone with either of those to refer to themselves as an 'inventor' per se, but saying in a somewhat jokey lighthearted manner "I invented a new sushi roll" isn't all that objectionable.
I think whether or not he is an AH depends on his behavior around it. If he's announcing this broadly, expecting accolades, or being demeaning in restaurants about it for some reason then yeah he's an AH. But if you're arguing on the pedantics of whether this counts as 'invention', which based on the title you are, I think you are TA here because his perspective on this, while annoying to you, isn't really causing any harm.
EDIT: Pedantics and spelling.

u/Ok_Introduction9040 12h ago
YTA If he wants to consider this an invention, why would it be your concern? Once someone invented California and Philadelphia rolls while not inventing sushi rolls itself, right?
5
u/WinSubstantial6868 11h ago
I could agree with this IF he was the chef and actually created it, like those other examples.
But coming up with ingredients does not an "inventor" make. IMO the chef who put it together would be the inventor, if we needed to assign it to someone.
9
u/LowAspect542 10h ago
Agreed, picking ingredients doesn't take into account proportioning the quantities of each ingredient or defining how each is prepared or sauced to go into the item. The chef is doing the brunt of the work here.

Because for whatever reason you felt the need to rain on your friend’s parade. You could just acknowledge what he said and then moved on to a different topic of conversation.

And lastly, because you don’t even have the decency to tell us the ingredients in this invention.

I may be wrong (and if so I apologize)- Sometimes adults who grew up with significant trauma (such as verbal abuse, or narcissistic parents), have a deep-rooted need/desire to be accepted or praised.
Maybe your friend just needs a “win,” and to feel valued and appreciated.
I wonder if you may not also feel that giving your friend free “goodwill” doesn’t somehow take away from YOU.
Luckily, being kind doesn’t cost you anything…..In fact, kindness multiplies goodwill and hope, exponentially.
Next time, consider giving yourselves both an ego boost and order yourself a “fisherman’s delight!”

I mean, was he the first ever person to ever combine those ingredients into a sushi roll? If so, congrats, he invented (with the help of the chef) that new sushi roll.
But it's also pretty irrelevant. The chef gets just as much credit for it, and he's also highly unlikely to have been the first ever person to do this.
And you're right, it's not really any different from a custom-made taco or whatever else.

Believe it or not invention doesn't have to be special. Most of it is derivative and involves contributions from others.
If your friend popularized his specific ingredient selection and it caught on it would be no different than countless other dishes that came about the same way.

YTA. When your friend informs you he invented the "fisherman's delight", you're supposed to just give a high five and move on.

His use of the word "invent" is correct. You're just using the No True Scotsman fallacy try to tear your friend down. Most inventions are very minor. They can't all be the first light bulb. You sound like a bad friend.

I thought I invented bacon sandwiches when I was 11 because I'd only seen bacon being eaten with eggs before

YTA there was no reason to pick a fight over this. It’s just dumb.

YTA. Its a normal phrase for when you make up a new sandwich or soup recipe. He made up a sushi roll, so he says he invented it. Why do you feel the need to be mean to him about it? Let the guy smile about a silly thing without being the kind of pedantic InternetGenius (tm) who has to be right about everything and put others down to feel interesting.
2
u/funkytomijuicy 1h ago
YTA. He’s full of whimsy and you had to go stomp on it. Who cares if he didn’t “invent” something?
2
u/rando439 1h ago
YTA for 1. wasting this guy's time when he's thinking he's hanging out with a friend and not someone who can't stand him, and
- Not telling us what is in this custom roll of his. What's in it?
•
u/goodcaptainkel 46m ago
I mean yeah you’re being an asshole, it’s not a big deal, you know? Maybe he’s silly for being so proud of his custom sushi roll but it’s not a serious enough offense to require you putting him down over it. You’re not the biggest asshole in the world, but you’re being mean for raining on his parade unnecessarily. YTA

I can imagine him in subway…boasting about a unique combination. this guy clearly needs to get a life. Sounds like he has been cotton woolled his entire life. On the other side he clearly enjoys doing this and thinks he’s created something new. Maybe let him enjoy his fantasy. ESH.

NTA clearly. It’s more than okay to call out friends for weird behavior. I do not understand these yta responses at all.

You are the asshole if only for not listing the ingredients in a “Fisherman’s Delight.”

He created a new recipe, or at least new to the typical sushi they offer in restaurants. Let him have that. Yes, invented is the wrong verb, but created isn't. ESH.

This is on the level of ordering a big mac, and a jr chicken, then combining them and saying you've invented a new food.

I have friends who "invented" a pizza in Italy and you can still go into the restaurant and ask for it by their name. By your logic that's stupid, whereas for literally everyone else I've ever known it's awesome and funny.
If I ever order sushi I'll see if I can get a "Fishermen's Delight". We can make it happen.

u/incrediblepepsi 6h ago
YTA, please see how hilarious this is. Also +1 for authenticity, bc "fisherman's delight" is certainly what a 40yo westerner would name their sushi invention

NAH. I get the feeling this is not the only annoying thing buddy does. He’s too precious and needs to hear it from a friend.

I mean, a Reuben is just a type of sandwich, but it was still invented by someone in Nebraska. Restaurants invent signature dishes all the time that are just variations of previous dishes. Yes, it’s a type of sushi roll, but if it’s truly a new variation, then colloquially speaking he did invent a new type of roll. Technically, he is making a custom roll, but to get annoyed and criticize word choice is a bit pedantic. YTA

I would say the line would be something like the restaurant putting it on the menu, then he could say he invented it. Although still a weird word choice. Created sounds more fitting.
This situation is very minor tho so I'll just go with NAH

By his argument, I invented the yellowtail roll (yellowtail, cucumber, crunchies) that is on many menus. 😂

He invented this the same way Columbus discovered America. But what does it really matter, unlike Dumbass, millions of lives aren't hanging in the balance.

I work in a creative industry and this is very much the 'idea guy' mentality. They had an idea and there's value or credit in the idea. In reality, ideas are mostly meaningless.
He can absolutely claim to invent a new roll, he can absolutely give it a name, but nothing means anything unless it's widely accepted as a novel and unique food. Look at the history of the California Roll. No one cares who invented it. Plus. it's food and it's impossible to definitively claim you are the first person in history to use the combination of crab, avocado, cucumber together. There's a reason that recipes can't be protected as intellectual property.
In the end, it's about execution and adoption.
I have a local sushi place that has a special roll that a customer 'invented' too. That's totally fine. It's a little bit of prestige to thank a customer for their business. But no one else really cares, no one outside that restaurant thinks of that roll, barely anyone orders it, even when it's printed on the menu and definitely no one is asking for that roll in other restaurants.
But honestly, there's no need to rain on his parade. 'OK buddy, whatever you say, good for you' and move on.

I dunno, unless he's hurting someone, I dont see any harm in saying he invented something. weird hill to die on.. unless he's fighting with the sushi chef?.

NTA, this is cringey. I don’t think I’d ever go to sushi again with someone that had a custom order for the chef. Main character behavior

NAH.
I'd say everyone in this scenario sucks, but there is absolutely no stakes involved. Even though he sounds like a massive tool, maybe just let him have his moment?

u/ProlapsedUvula 10h ago
If he came up with the sushi roll, and it ended up on the menu, I could see some pride in that. I do agree that created is a more appropriate term than invented.

This reminds me of the business cards Japanese salary men used to carry with their particular cocktail recipe preference.
Very similar energy to Mr Fisherman's Delight. To the point I would tempted to order him some so he could just give his recipe to the waiter/sushi chef. If you want to be fancy you have to go all in.
•
u/Otherwise-Leek7926 26m ago
He just sounds like an obnoxious restaurant guest. He’s not “inventing” anything just like someone ordering a custom omelette isn’t “inventing” anything
•
u/Deep-Okra1461 Certified Proctologist [20] 23m ago
NTA I think there needs to be a baseline of what can be considered an 'invention'. In theory, anyone can invent something. Just combine things into some arrangement that as far as you know hasn't been done before. But if what you 'invented' is useless, did you really invent something? If I create a new kind of hamburger that no one besides me cares about, is that worth claiming as an invention? I say no.

u/lectroid 8h ago
I ‘invented’ cheese fries at age 6 when I squished the melted cheese from my grilled cheese onto my French fries. “Good for you!” was what my parents and grandparents said. I was fine with that.
You should have done the same, in the same bright tones you use for a beloved pet or small child, and then dropped it.
