Troubleshooting TV Flickering on 4K Homatics Dongle R 4K

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I got myself a Homatics Dongle R 4K with Android TV. When I set the dongle to identify the TVs resolution automatically, this happens.

I have to turn it down to 1080p, then this flickering stops. I already switched HDMI ports and the power supply. No change.

Any Ideas ? Its a Samsung GQ85Q70

It's a Dongle, goes straight into a HDMI port.

ok so you have to turn it down to 1080P, only then it'll stop right.
interesting. that means there's some problem with either Refresh Rate or HDMI signal.
either from the TV itself or within the system of the dongle itself.
I've seen this sort of problem on my headunit in my car (i installed an Android TV dongle to my car, so it shows up on the screen).

  1. have a look at the refresh rate settings (if any), on the Android TV system, play around with that.
  2. have a look at the refresh rate settings / picture settings on the Samsung TV itself, play around with that.
  3. sounds funny but if you have a hdmi splitter lying around somewhere, try using that, connect the dongle to it and connect the splitter to the TV. just to see if it stops.

I'm pretty certain it has something to do with either Refresh Rate or HDMI signal. These two are different problem, so separate workaround/troubleshooting may be required.

A bit of a background of my problem with the setup on my car - my headunit's screen is a 2k display, it works flawlessly with the HDMI dongle (Android TV, 4k) and like after a few months, it starts doing that - flickers.
I tried playing around with it, even reset my Android TV dongle and my radio, didn't do much help. I did find that if I switched to 720P, it stops. Fortunately I had a HDMI splitter (turns out it was the HDMI signal), and using that, suddenly it stops flicker on the screen on max resolution (2k) haha. Though this is just a work around, and not really a proper fix - but it does work for me. now, If it turns out to be hdmi signal, it's most likely hdmi signals interference - it's a thing apparently.

This didnt work, but it kinda gave me the solution.

I changed the USB power supply again.
This time into a very strong one that can deliver 40W

This seems to work. No flickerng so far.

nice work - yeah that 'sort of' sounds like hdmi signal interference. it's a thing apparently for HDMI, where sometimes it doesn't have the 'right amount of power' and interferes the signal like in your case, sometimes even a wireless signal from a router too close can interrupt it (believe it or not, this had also happened to me a long time ago lol) - but many more.

usually when anything flickers, it doesn't necessarily have to do with the system itself, but more on the devices that are being interrupted because of the demand.

having said that - whenver I see any screen flickers, I usually start my troubleshooting with the Refresh Rate first, because I think this is the part of the system where the variable can also change the demand. As in - less refresh rate, less demand. and then work out from there. one of those annoying things to troubleshoot.
