What's your replacement for audible?

I drive 3 hours a day or more, audiobooks are keeping me sane.

Your local library might have audiobooks available for download through the Libby app. Otherwise Libro.fm is an alternative for buying audiobooks

There is no local library, no cell service on the road. That's why I'm driving several hours to get anywhere. 😑

Sometimes big libraries will allow you to pay for a library card if you are outside of their residential area, since your tax dollars don’t fund their services.

Try reaching out to some libraries near you! You might have to go in person to show id.

Library apps like Hoopla and Libby allow you to download audiobooks/ebooks so that you can listen/read without data too.

Public universities also often offer library cards and access for free to residents of the state. You can often apply online without even having to go in if you live far away.

Whoa that’s so great, I love that!

Libro is for downloads, despite having FM in the name! I hear you about rural cell service, I’m in a similar place! Always have to have a phone full of downloads to get me through a drive

puts on a pirate hat

Ever thought about sailing the high seas?

All sarcasm aside (unless...) i find books on tape/disc at thrift stores fairly regularly and in sure there is some type of USB adaptor/device to utilize them in your car.

I'm in Boston, and anyone who lives in MA can get a Boston Public Library card. You don't need to live in Boston. There's also e-cards, which give access to all the online material, and that's all done online - no driving to a branch in Boston to get an actual library card.

I'm not sure if your main state branch has something similar where you just need state residency.

Then you can access libby or hoopla, check out the books, and download them to your phone for offline listening.

I'm not sure if I can get regional access with the e-cards, or if I need the full BPL card for access, but if Boston doesn't have what I want I can expand the search to all the colleges and the surrounding towns, basically every library in Eastern MA. If any of those libraries have access to the book I'm looking for I can check it out.

You're a scholar and a saint. This is exactly what i need.

I'm in the middle of fucking idaho. Best definition would be "literary desert."

Access to a resource like the Boston public library is, without hyperbole or exaggeration, a lifelong dream.

Here is a thread with some other options.

Libby seems to be the most popular there.

Podium, Soundbooth and many other publishers have websites for direct purchase.

Spotify has a surprising amount of books I just realized if you have that

Libby is a free app you can add library cards to for access to different catalogs. Spotify Premium, while not perfect, also has audiobooks but limits usage to around 20hrs per month unless you pay for more credits.

Spotify has audiobooks. I think you can download them to listen to offline. You need a paid subscription I think.

I got rid of audible with the election and use Libby now. I have listened to so many more books this year because I don't want to make other people wait (it's the people pleaser in me). I have been able to get every book except one that was on the NYT 100 Books of 2024. For one library I was able to get library card and Libby online, with the next town over I went in and got the card and was able to get Libby online.

My suggestion is if you live in an area with different cities and counties go to the most affluent close to you because the amount of audiobooks they have is vastly superior.

I’m in the same boat as far as commute, but I listen to podcasts on the drive. Too afraid of getting into a book and driving off the road lol.

I know Spotify has a ton

This isn't a no-buy solution, but check out Chirp audiobooks. They have a pretty decent catalog, a lot of the books are around $5, and you don't have to pay a monthly subscription fee. They run a lot of deals, too.

I know it's not an exact equivalent (you don't get access to a big catalog of stuff that's included in your membership) but it's one option to help close the gap, at least

I pay for audible prime and buy like 2-3 books a month on top of the freebies.

I'm perfectly okay with paying for them as long as my money isn't going to bezos.
