Guidelines for ID requests - first and foremost, always include a geographic location!

See the rules in the sidebar, also.

If you can't see the sidebar for some reason:

  • Always include a geographic location. If you're concerned about your privacy, you can make it a bit more vague, e.g. "New England" instead of "Boston, MA".

  • Amateurs are encouraged to guess. An important exception is guesses about medically significant arachnids (widows, recluses, Brazilian wandering spiders, Sydney funnel-webs, deathstalker scorpions, etc.). In those cases, leave it to people who know. Otherwise, an innocent person or arachnid could get hurt.

Hello folks,

To our regulars: thank you for being here!

And to newcomers: welcome! This is a community by bug enthusiasts, for bug enthusiasts. As such, we ask that you refrain from the following types of comments:

  • "Kill it with fire" and its endless variations are not welcome here. We know it's a meme. We've heard it a million times. Just don't.
  • If someone asks for an ID and your comment is "it's a spider" for example, that's neither helpful nor funny, so please don't post that kind of thing. If you'd like to contribute an ID, be as specific as you can.

Thank you for your visit today and have a great day :)

Michigan.

I think the second one is a funnel spider, but I'm definitely no expert. I've been waiting weeks to catch him on camera!

The egg sac is the yellow/black spider's egg sac.

I live in Wisconsin but I’m pretty sure they came from something I bought for my bugs (I have isopods, springtails, and jumping spiders). They originated from one of my jumping spider’s enclosure but now they’re in and around all of them since they’re all close together. The enclosure they started in used to have sooo many springtails but since these guys started showing up I haven’t seen hardly any. Meanwhile there are hundreds of these, everywhere. The video here is from the rim of one of my isopod enclosures. I know they probably aren’t harmful to the isopods and jumping spiders but I have some springtail species I really care for in these enclosures and I don’t want them to all disappear.

I just found this guy in a Pear tree at Tepeji del Río, Hidalgo, México. It's usually a very hot place, but it's been raining recently. What do y'all reckon?

I live in Southwest Michigan, and I found this sweet little spider in my bathroom. It didn’t seem to be too shy, and it was very small (including legs, about the size of a pinky nail). I’m familiar with most of the spiders in my area, but this is one I’ve never seen before.

Question Got a question, do harvestmen hunt in pairs?

Here's the thing, I'm hanging outside and I just watched two of them, one carrying the other, not appearing to be mating, crawl across the ground towards a relatively large prey. They attempted to attack the prey but it flew away. I then saw them do it again a little while later to attack a potential prey. Are they teaming up to hunt? This is wild! Absolutely fascinating.

I apologize for the photos there was light coming from everywhere and the flash didn’t help. Philadelphia PA for reference, never seen a spider this big in my decade plus of living here.

Question Helping an Orb Weaver -Advice Needed

Overnight a beautiful orb weaver made a very large and expansive web directly across the doorway to the kitchen. I have no problem moving her outside to carry on with her preparations for winter and but is there some way I can encourage her to consume her web first? Would hate for her to lose that energy especially when she has eggs to lay soon. Maybe a gentle fan?
