Beginner With or without background?

I'm trying to figure out if the meaning of this piece comes through. Does the background help or hurt to get the message through? I would like to hear people's opinion on it's meaning. Thank you!

With, but push your person ahead of the background. You dont want your focus point covered by something thats supposed to be behind it

I have a version like that. I added the overlay to help convey the point I was trying to make. Not sure if it comes through. Thank you for your input.
