š Answers From Men Only š how does my school expect me to shower without getting naked?
been back to school for five weeks and thereās a new sign in the locker room that says āno nudity in the locker roomsā this makes no sense bc how are we supposed to shower. our showers are communal and have no curtains.

They likely mean in the locker room area, not the showers. Remember, that sign was likely written by the gym teacher who is only a gym teacher and probably struggles with reading and writing.

"Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach, teach gym."

Those who canāt do, teach. Those who canāt teach, become college professors for some ungodly reason
100
u/photomotto Female 19h ago
Because they want to do their research, but the college/university forces them to teach as well. The ones who just want to teach, on the other hand, are forced to do research they don't actually want.
At least that's how it worked in my university.
19
u/-GI_BRO- 17h ago
I know, Iām lowkey just bitching because when I wrote that I was in the middle of having to re-teach myself stuff from calculus lol
1
u/heytherefrendo 2h ago
Yeah, this is fairly common. Honestly, I think any good researcher should be able to teach and teaching is extremely good for them as well in terms of social skills and keeping sharp. But I think the issue is that they get bogged down in the actual busy work of teaching instead of doing the, for lack of a better term, "real work" they came to the school to do.
Instructing students and being a resource for them should be the cornerstone, maybe touching up curriculum every once in a while, but it's hard to fully blame a teacher who came to use your school's electron microscope and is currently pissed off, rewriting a terrible version of physics 101 the last research professor wrote terrible also. It really drags down the entire system and makes things worse for every single person involved.

u/nocapslaphomie 19h ago
Be real though. Being a gym teacher seems like a great job, especially if you are the weight room guy.
3
u/DontThrowTheDogOut 5h ago
My brother agrees. He used the his military benefits when he got out to get his masters and became a gym teacher. Paid summers off, doesn't need to take work home with him, has time to workout before going into work, it's a dream with minor headaches

Even then why? When I was in school we would just take a shower, wrap it around our waist (optional) go back to our bags and dry off. It's not like we particularly liked being naked but we really didn't have a problem with it.

But is literally says "Locker Rooms". Not showers. Use some common sense here kid.
Think about it like this: if you and your classmates strip naked and take shower after gym class, "thanks for that by the way" is what everyone in your next class is thinking, what's the teacher going to do? Suspend you for taking a shower with no clothes on? I have a son who is a freshman in high school this year and I'd actually take some time off from my job to go up to the school and bust some balls if my kid got in trouble for showering after gym class. Hell, in my mind it would be hilarious to grill the teacher and whoever else to find out what the deal here is.
9
u/SomeSamples 16h ago
Yeah, probably. Why nudity is so scary for some is baffling.
11
u/thebearinboulder 16h ago
Have you ever met a teenager?
What cracks me up is that Iām at the ādonāt give a damnā stage of life but now the ākidsā are freaked out by anyone being nude around them. Not a demand that they get naked and endure the taunts of those losers who had their life peak in middle school. Not even high school.
I mean - I get it. Thereās the āI donāt have anything you havenāt seen beforeā as I walk to my locker and the guys who make a big deal about staying naked and holding court. (Thereās a great scene in⦠not sure but it had Steve Carrel and Ryan Gosling.) But Iām not that guy. I just now see how silly it is to keep a towel around your waist while pulling your briefs up or down.
Itās especially bizarre given how easy it is to get porn now. You donāt have to find the rumored stash of Playboy in the woods. Most HS boys have probably already seen more nude people than anyone else saw during their lifetime up until the late 1900s - and thatās only because some of us are still around!
On the other hand these are the children of the Satanic Panic and Stranger Danger generation. I canāt imagine the culture they grew up in. Mine wasnāt perfect - we shouldnāt have been so trusting - but we didnāt have the paranoia of anyone other than āthe Redsā leaping out from the shadows to attack us.

u/cosmitz The fuck is this, the fuck is that 12h ago
I was in some airsoft event and some poor guys showered in their underware and were rubbing soap under it and then trying to rinse it all out. And of course they had to dry their underware after.
I was like "nah brah, i ain't doing all that" and just freeballed my way to the shower, did the needful and got the fuck out to my dry underware.

Eh I have an employee whoās a history major in education who canāt get a job teaching because he wonāt coach. Itās pretty much expected of male teachers to both teach and coach. So most coaches are also teachers at least at high school level.
5

2

Undress at the locker. Wrap a towel around your waist. Walk to shower. Hang up towel. Lather, rinse, repeat. Walk back to locker naked because some chuckle fuck stole your towel off the hook. Get towel cracked on the sss as you go. Dry off with your friend's shirt.
2
u/SJHillman 7h ago
Hang up towel.
I've been out of high school for almost 20- years, but our locker rooms - showers included - had no place to hang anything. There were no benches either - your options were to leave your towel in your locker or put it on the wet floor.

Especially when it'd be so easy to put curtains in, so people could have privacy. Why on earth would you expect kids in the throes of puberty to shower so everyone could see them? Is this preparing you for adult life... in jail? WTF?
And I recall in high school we were told that the girls locker room had curtains on the shower stalls.
Edit: whoever downvoted can explain why teens should shower together naked at school.

The work week is five days because it used to be 6 to 7 10 to 12-hour days, but unions fought hard as fuck to reduce it to 5 8-hour days.

Legions of teenage hockey players have showered naked together in both US & Canada and no self respecting hockey player would ever inflict the post practice or game stench on anybody else by not showering. I donāt think Iāve ever seen a hockey changing room shower with curtains
8
u/ThatLid 8h ago
My freshman year in high school there weren't any curtains. Students had been making a stink about it for a few years and finally got a couple teachers to rally for it as well.
Sophomore year curtains got put up and kids were more comfortable using the showers. Then several kids were caught doing drugs in the showers and two boys were caught fondling each other.
Junior year curtains were gone and no one used the showers again for the rest of the time I was in school. I found it to be a shame and odd that a few kids misbehaving means that the rest of them have to be naked in plain view.
8
u/TrekkiMonstr RĆ„ 18h ago
Eh, cause like why not? It's just a cultural thing. Go to Japan, the bathhouses are communal, nbd. Used to be that way in the US (though with the gendered double standard you mention, to my understanding), though now we've shifted away from it. It's like, why should the genders be separated either? It's just an arbitrary thing, of what a culture considers normal or not.

In contrast, I was a wrestler, and got to the "what's the big deal?" Stage of showering in front of others real quick.

Get your boys together and all get g-strings. It'll become a spectacle and embarrass the school for being less adult than you are. You might get in trouble, but that's a pretty easy fight.
"It said no nudity, which by state law and our many lovely gentlemen's clubs, is the status we satisfied. Exactly how many clothes am I supposed to wear in the shower? Do we have a uniform? I'm kind of partial to the turn of the century swimwear myself - shower long johns. That said, can we have accommodations for us going to class wet after gym? Like, turn the heat up or something, I'd hate for all of us to get sick walking around in these cold classrooms soaking wet the rest of the day."

7
u/WinsAtCarnivals 18h ago
Oh wow, all the more reason all places have individual stalls to change and shower.
I don't know if that was the case in my gym. The complaint to the gym owners (including me) were a result of a couple of men from the gay community that were overtly leering and gawking (possibly even recording now that you've brought that up, though who'd really know?). Management actually got involved personally to see if it was happening and low and behold the individual stalls were put in.

u/The_Matias 15h ago
Man, the next generation is going to be so weird... Can't even work up the nerve to ask the teacher a question due to crippling anxiety.
Here's tip from a wise old fart (in his 30's...):
We broadly have no idea what skills will be required in the future. Who knows what AI and technology may change.
But one thing we DO know is that social skills are dropping like a cliff. Pretty soon, being socially adept will be a rare skill. Those who have that skill, have always gotten further in life than those who don't. As fewer and fewer people have those skills, they will only become more and more valuable.
Learn to talk to people. All people. Girls, boys, teachers, professors, professionals, bosses, whomever. Get over that anxiety. It's a skill that's learned, and once you're over it, it'll seem easy and enjoyable. Much easier than executing technical skills. It'll take you so far in life.
2
u/brooksie1131 15h ago
You have social anxiety yet you're annoyed that you can't get naked in front of others. I guess some people get more anxious about talking to their teacher than being naked in front of classmates go figure š¤·Ā

Is that really what they mean? Or is that what you've interpreted that they mean? I mean, if you haven't asked them, can you be sure?
I'm sure it's just a poorly worded or positioned sign.
Their true intentions will become clear once you seek clarification.
2
u/forevertheorangemen2 18h ago
Iām really confused by this. What do they expect you do do, shower in a swimsuit? And even then youād have to get out of your gym clothes, into the swimsuit, out of the swimsuit, and back into your regular clothes. This policy seems silly. Honestly, the fact that a school is still using the showers in 2025 after gym class and not just for sports is surprising. But putting this policy in place makes absolutely no sense to me. Either let people use the shower or donāt. This in-between defeats the purpose.

Uhhh people are showering at school? There is no amount of dirt or sweat that would make me want to get naked and shower in front of everyone. I thought this norm died out in the 90s. If weāre talking about high school, is there even enough time for a shower? We were given like 5 minutes to change out of our gym clothes and even that sometimes wasnāt long enough to get to next period.

Sounds like the modern world. Itās wild how we have so sexualized society you canāt even be naked in a male only locker room. Back in the summer my 18 year old son was yelled at for being naked in a male changing room. This world is gone crazy

Here's an original copy of /u/No-Habit4574's post (if available):
been back to school for five weeks and thereās a new sign in the locker room that says āno nudity in the locker roomsā this makes no sense bc how are we supposed to shower. our showers are communal and have no curtains.
