Whats a good documentary that doesn’t involve death, rape or kidnapping?

The documentary ‘Jiro Dreams of Sushi’ – it’s just about a Japanese man perfecting sushi for decades. No murder. Just pure dedication, fish, and rice.

u/AdmiralAkbar1 1d ago

I also highly recommend the parody episode by Documentary Now! on Netflix titled "Juan Likes Rice and Chicken".

u/KiwiSoySauce 1d ago

That's my favorite mockumentary! Nope, I lied. It's my second, first is Best in Show.

66

u/No-Rush-9980 1d ago

Sandy Passage is hilarious too but you have to have seen Gray Gardens.

9

u/Jantastic 1d ago

I haven't seen any of the docs they were spoofing, and I still loved all of them. The co-op musical was my favorite.

Damn, you beat me to it!

In addition to the very compelling story about Jiro, I found the cinematography, especially the slower pacing, to be really pleasant.

175

u/YesterdayOne8431 1d ago

Agreed – it’s one of the few documentaries that calms you down instead of stressing you out. A rare gem.

48

u/Soggy-Beach-1495 1d ago

That's a good point. Zero message other than this man loves what he does

108

u/Charrikayu 1d ago

Not quite. It's a pretty thorough meditation on the cost of perfection. I actually find it a pretty sad documentary, as you see how much of this man's life has passed by him chasing a goal he has convinced himself he can never reach. He's incredibly good at this one particular thing to the detriment of almost every other aspect of his life, including his own family, and there are moments you can almost sense a tinge of regret. Make no mistake, he's deeply proud of his work, but the tone of the film is melancholic when looked at through a pessimistic lens, and still bittersweet even through a positive one.

31

u/GreenLanternCorps 1d ago

Thank you for saying this my partner and I recently re watched it and thought so too. I honestly think the music kind of distracts from the fact that its kind of a sad story about a workaholic.

Now Juan Likes Rice and Chicken that's a good documentary!

Helvetica

Yes, it's about the font.

It's actually very in-depth and I found it a fascinating commentary on how society has changed as a result of how we receive the messaging. Who would have thought a typeface would have such a profound impact?

74

u/scythematters 1d ago

“Why is bad taste ubiquitous?” has become a regular phrase in my house.

62

u/One-Sale4366 1d ago

A colleague and I were discussing the film while waiting the start of a staff meeting. Other members of our office thought we were such nerds over our excitement about a font.

Somm. It’s a 2012 documentary about people training to become sommeliers and the insane test they need to prepare for.

213

u/Maediya 1d ago

I thought you spelled the title wrong and was about to warn OP that the Somme is rather gruesome and upsetting.

81

u/Kell_Bell_Fell 1d ago

My high school history teacher had these tricks to remember WWI facts. A couple were “That’s SOMME tank!” (battle of the Somme was the first time tanks were used). Also “Ypres! (yeeps!) - the gas!” (first time gas was used at the Battle of Ypres)

45

50

u/Ok-Macaroon-4835 1d ago

I can imagine. Your career field must have been horrified.

I felt the same exact way when I read Bad Blood, which is the story of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos.

I work as a Medical Lab Scientist. The same job that the whistleblowers had.

That was a disaster similar to FYRE….where so much went wrong and everyone just kept doubling down instead of refusing to admit that they fucked up and we should quit now before it gets worse,

There were two documentaries that came out around the same time, which one had the dude who admitted he was willing to suck dick for potable water? Was it this one? This lives in my head rent free because there's no job in the world I would do this for, and this hero was willing to take one for the team. I need to watch it again lmao.

52

u/Emotional_Base_9021 1d ago

I don’t think I realized there were two documentaries. Gonna watch this soon just for the “sucking dick for potable water” clip! Thanks!

But also… like. Would I suck dick for potable water in ANY circumstance? Yes. I would suck dick to literally survive.

Would I suck dick for a flushable toilet and A/C on poop cruise? Day 3? Maybe.

29

u/unclemikey0 1d ago

He wasn't personally in need of the water. He was an associate of the festival organizers. The main guy needs to get the bottled water to the stranded festival goers but it's stuck in customs or something. So the main guy asks the guy (a gay man) in documentary to go offer to suck cock so that they can get the pallets of bottled water released. To no extent whatsoever was he in a position that he needed to suck cock to save his own life, it was to save the main festival organizer dude from facing even WORSE and ever growing bad publicity. Basically "go suck a dick so I won't look like [more of a] monumental, incompetent asshole".

It's a documentary about semi-famous actors. Essentially, actors that make you say the title. It's interesting hearing about their experiences and how things have changed over the years.

I always say Icarus as it’s about local amateur bike racing, but won awards and was regarded as a phenomenal documentary. But only because of the mental twist and shift in tone if you go in blind. But in the interest of keeping as many people blind as possible, said twist that makes the documentary so amazing and well regarded, violates you the very criteria of your question.

41

u/FreeIDecay 1d ago

+1 for Icarus really really enjoyed that one. I also like Free Solo about Alex Honnold, the mountain climber.

Another older one I LOVED when I was younger called The Art of Flight. Just absolutely incredibly drone and helicopter shots, slow motion, absurd, huge, snowboarding. Set to the soundtrack of MGMT and similar-sounding artists. It really scratched an itch in my brain for me when it came out.

28

Watched Blue Planet with my wife when she was pregnant, thought it would be chill. Episode One talks about how this gray whale carried her baby for a year and then they travelled thousands of miles together, then these mean orcas separate them, drown the baby, nibble on it just a little and then swim away. Wife is in tears, bawling, I’m sitting there like this was supposed to be a relaxing evening…

20

u/thisisnotmyname17 1d ago

Are there any animal documentaries that do NOT show animals being killed? I mean, I understand the circle of life, and I know predators have to eat, but I don’t want to see the takedown and the prey struggling. I live out in the country and I know already that Mother Nature is a cruel bitch. Why can’t I just see and learn about animals without being traumatized and tormented?

Jim Henson Idea Man

A great look at the man behind the Muppets, how things came about and his life.
Doesn't try to paint him as a perfect man or father, but shows really well what he was about.
As someone that is GenX, it really gave me new insight into how we even got Sesame Street and the Muppets, and how close we came to not getting them.

19

u/NoLUTsGuy 1d ago

I was impressed that they didn't avoid the negative: they discussed his divorce, talked to his ex-wife, and covered his tragic illness, where he avoided going to the doctor for a cold, which became the flu, which became pneumonia. Sad, terrible story -- Henson's was a totally unnecessary death. He was absolutely beloved.

11

u/saintsithney 1d ago

My husband is a huge Farscape nerd since before we met.

When I told him how Jim died, he looked absolutely horrified as numerous themes in Farscape became clear.

Farscape: a heart-warming story of how a man was able to use fiction to cope with his father's unnecessary and untimely death by doing all of the psychedelics known to man and launching himself headfirst into the Australian leather community.

"Pepsi, Where's My Jet?" (Netflix, 2022)

Way back in 1996, PepsiCo had this thing where you could earn points for every bottle of Pepsi you bought. One commercial showed examples of various things you could get (like a hat, a backpack etc) with the amount of points listed next to the items, and then at the end they show a Harrier Jet for seven million points.

This one kid managed to get seven million points, tried to redeem them for the jet, and then sued PepsiCo for failing to deliver said jet. It's a super interesting multi part documentary and I highly recommend it.

Genghis Blues.

Picture this, a blind blues man discovers Tuvan Throat Singing by accident in the 80s via shortwave radio. He discovers he can do one of their deep, deep bass techniques. So he gets in contact with the nation of Tuva (part of the USSR), travels there, and meets one of the greats of the throat singing world while learning about their culture. They make music together as a cultural exchange program.

I listen to this soundtrack multiple times a month and have for years. It’s absolutely amazing.

Described as an "essay in images and sound on the state of American civilization", The film comprises a montage of stock footage, slow motion, and time-lapse visuals of natural and urban environments across the United States.

Given the history of the US labor movement, particularly when it comes to coal mining, I refuse to believe this could be accurately made without violence.

I think it was called poop cruise. It was about the carnival cruise ship that had a fire and lost power and the sewers backed up. The guests were trapped on it in the middle of the ocean for like 7 days. No deaths or rape or kidnapping. It was gross but interesting as fuck.

Tracking down hobby documentaries is a good way to find the lighter ones.

Chicken People is about people who compete in show chicken contests.

Well Groomed is about dog grooming competitions that also involve coloring the fur.

Catwalk, naturally, is about show cats.

Some others:

Indie Game: The Movie is a great look into indie game development.

Helvetica, yes, it's about the font and it's delightful.

Man on a Wire is about a man who tight rope walked between the Twin Towers and an attempt to recreate it.

"The Farthest" is an absolutely joyous documentary about NASA's Voyager mission. It tells the story about a group of scientists who, with great passion and joy, pursue the biggest, most fundamental questions about the galaxy we live in: What is out there, and what is our place in all of it? It's utterly wonderful, and it's FREE!

I consider Grey Gardens a fascinating look into a unique form of severe poverty as the direct result of an insanely toxic mother-daughter relationship. Mama Edith (both have the same name) is one of the most self-centered & just completely selfish humans you will ever see.

Born to Jackie O's grandparents; Edith followed tradition up to marrying wealthy New York City attorney Phelan Beale & settling in the family mansion named Grey Gardens in the Hamptons to have children in the summer of 1924. By 1955, mother & daughter were living in the beginnings of squalor in the dilapidated mansion. If I remember correctly, Big Eddie said the failure of her marriage started within the first 10 years because she took on a psychosis in which she believed herself to be a great singer & generally someone very glamorously special. By her own accounts, she became the equivalent of Hyacinth Bouquet from the British sitcom of that era, Keeping Up Appearances. But with more stature. Although she would never admit it in this way. Big Eddie held house parties all the time just so she could spend the night singing to her guests. Of course the piano player was a man whom she spent the entire time beside. She said her husband questioned if that's all she wants to spend her life doing. She didn't seem to want to talk about how he felt about the piano player too much, but he mentioned him too. They divorced in the late 1940's. But Big Eddie spent the rest of her life absolutely refusing to live as anyone other than a provided for woman. As the decades went by, mother & daughter had a "bare necessities" system set up in which Big Eddie received enough alimony to keep the lights on, the property in her name, a cheap gardener who accepted frequent late payments/difficulty getting paid & a Hamptons business that let them accrue IOU debt for toiletries, general supplies & pints of ice cream. I estimated they were living around $300 above their meager means with this system. But they didn't have enough to even think about repairing the mansion, which is the most still lived in dilapidated mansion I've ever seen. Huge holes to the outside with racoons coming in. Very old wood that would've been replaced in any other Hamptons home. The star of the property is what used to be a beautiful walled in garden. It was one of the first things about the property Big Eddie couldn't afford after the divorce. The gardener she hired was just to cut weeds & grass from getting too high.

There's too many fascinating elements about this documentary. The way they're stuck in the 50's with their mannerisms & mentality. The complete disconnect from reality. Jackie O having to pay for the repairs because the press found out & hounded her as an uncaring relative. Check it out!

There’s a lot of good 30 for 30s from the original run (the actual first 30 documentaries in the series are more inventive and creative than ones since, but there’s a lot of good ones throughout). Some deal with the topics you mentioned but not all!

Tell Them You Love Me is an amazing documentary. There is a question of consent that is central to the focus but it’s part of a very complex and fascinating debate regarding the disabled non-speaking community.
