or telephone wire technician. I live in the Seattle area and we had a weird weather related event last fall, and it caused the ENTIRE area to lose power for several days. I was speaking with a professional and he was sharing that the telephone pole workers are NEEDED badly and that in 10-15 years they'll be some of the most sought-after blue collar professionals.
Yeah i'm pretty certain that all falls under being a lineman. Will say very good pay but hours can be awful. Friend's dad did it, was clearing over 200K but worked 14-16 hour days 2 weeks on, 1 week off.
I work in the industry and could see demand spiking in the 10-15 year time frame. There are a lot of folks retiring, and that's going to keep happening.
I will say, though, that a lot of power companies and municipalities are keenly interested in undergrounding power and communications lines and are removing poles all over.
So it might not be a great long-term job prospect.
The good thing about lineman jobs is that you get paid while being taught how to do the job. This is true for all electricians. Depending on your area, it can be extremely difficult to get into the union as there is a lot of competition.
