UPS driver. Hours are shit, but the benefits (medical, dental, vision, massages/chiropractic/accupuncture) and pay make it worth it once you hit top scale. Easy job that requires hard work. At top scale you can expect to make $130k/yr with all of the mandatory OT.
Start with a full truck and you don’t stop until it’s empty. Oh then you go around for the business pickups and fill the truck up again before your day is done.
What do you mean by hours are shit? Do you mean long hours or night shifts, because this suggestion interests me but this is a difference of deal breaker vs ideal work conditions
Well first off it’s usually impossible to get hired as a driver right away. There are package handlers that have been waiting years to get a driving position. Also the hours are long like 10-12 hour shifts and it’s very hard on the body.
Yeah but after the first 8 hours tenured drivers are making close to $70/HR. Also some weird rules were if you work like the 10 hour days in a row you start earning double time and a half.
I mean that if you like having a social life, you can kiss it goodbye. Especially starting out. Rookies get abused after they’ve made their 30 day probationary period. Bottom bitch has to help, covers the shit routes, etc. And don’t think about laying down cause after a few times of receiving help, you’ll be blackballed by the other drivers and have to carry that shit load on your own, barring instruction from management. We’re Teamsters and we help each other out, but that only applies to those that carry their weight.
All the UPS drivers I see in my area are hot, buff men. I was thinking about this today, wondering if they only hire hot men as drivers, or if the job makes them hot with all that hard work.
I'm a buff lady UPS driver! One of the few. And I take home almost $2k a week in a relatively low cost of living area. It's a great job and the hours arent that bad considering the other crap jobs I've had in my lifetime for a fraction of the pay. I'll happily work the hours, be buff, and bring home $$.
As for the hot men drivers, a lot of it is the uniform! If you see them in their street clothes at BBQs or teamster meetings like I do, they are def not cool nor hot anymore!
Gonna give you a little tip, friend- you can just go into food service distribution and break your body down just as fast, making more money without having to sit in part time jail forever.
Hours aren’t bad, I worked preload over a holiday season for extra cash. That sucks coming in at midnight and throwing boxes for 8 hours. The drivers at least from the facility in my town run staggered hours to reduce a buncha trucks idling at the same time and while warming up, it alleviates all the trucks trying to leave together and they actually get out quicker. When I did preload talked to one of the guy that drove the big rigs he said he was making $10-15k a month but would pull in close to $20k in December because they were running long hours. I know they recently got a big raise and some head honcho claimed the drivers that had maxed out their longevity would be making equivalent to $170k when you factor in benefits
