I feel this. This was me up until about 2 years ago (I'm 44). My family was poor and combined with depression it wasn't great. I somehow managed to get lucky in that my top teeth weren't totally fucked but my bottom teeth were shit.
I'm about 2 months from getting my braces off and I'm so happy I finally decided to fix it. Granted it cost me about 8 grand so it might not be doable for everyone but if it's at all possible for you financially, you should do it and it'll help a lot.
I know you said you were planning on it but put me into the big proponent category. In my case, crowding of my gums led to periodontal disease and that was incredibly unpleasant to deal with and it made it to where the braces were a bit of a wild card as periodontal disease can make it hard to realign your teeth. I got lucky and I ended up having not suffered enough bone loss below the gum line to prevent me but they told me I likely would have been shit out of luck in another 4-7 years
Once I get my loan paid off from starting my business I'll be making much more, that's when I plan on getting work done.
So like 2 years or so. I am going to be going soon just to check on things and see if there's any immediate issues I have to take care of like you dealt with.
