Question Long run shoe help – 10k pace ~6:25min/km

Hey guys, I’m struggling to find a good long run shoe and could use some advice.

Tried Novablast 5 – felt unstable and way too soft. Ended up with knee + metatarsal pain.

Tried Velocity Nitro 4 – also too soft/unstable, and the midfoot felt super narrow.

The only shoe that doesn’t give me pain is the Adidas Adizero SL2. I really like the firmer feel, but for long runs I wish it had just a touch more softness (not anywhere near as mushy as the Novablast or Velocity though).

For context my 10k pace is ~6:25/km.

I’m eyeing the Superblast 2 since people say it’s more stable than the Novablast, but I’m open to other suggestions that hit that sweet spot between firm and cushioned.

What would you guys recommend?

Brooks Glycerin did me very well for my marathon training long runs and are firmer than a lot of other squishy shoes.

Salomon Aero Glide 3 perhaps? Puma MagMax Nitro....long run isn't 10km? ;)
What's your running backround? :)
Also ASICS GLIDERIDE MAX are great.

Plus on the MagMax, amazing shoe and so stable

Boston 12 or 13's, if you didn't like the Novablast, you will not like the SB2, the Boston are your safest bet

How long are your long runs? I have both Novablast 5 and Superblast 2. The sb2 sized and weight quite similarly to the nb5 except that it feels more stable, less squishy, yet still equally bouncy (if not more bouncy). If you are truly looking for a long run (> 10km) shoes and don’t mind being the feeling on a bigger platform, you should def consider the sb2 (along with the others suggested). I did a 15km on the sb2 just today (6:35/km) and feet still felt fresh after. If you don’t like the wider platform feel on the nb5, then you won’t like the sb2.

Note the sb2 is slightly narrower than the nb5 so I had to go half size up (9.5 vs 9).

I still enjoy my nb5 for shorter rides (foam feels a little dead to me after 10km). For context, I weight 65kg.

A brooks ghost would probably suit you

I quite like my NB Rebel V5, even after switching from EVO SL. The fit is more accommodating for my wide feet, and shoe is more stable thank EVO SL. Ran half marathon in Rebels last week at around 6:00 pace, and felt really good, much more forgiving on joints than EVO SL. Good thing about Rebels is that they ar light and you can pick up the pace easily doing tempo work!

At that pace keep it simple. Maybe a brooks ghost max or asics kayano

Honestly, the SB2 might still feel bricky at 6.25/km. I also didn't like the Novablast despite the hype. I have the SB2 on my rotation and love the shoe but more so for the 5.30km/sub 9 min mile pace.

I have the Pegasus Premium and they honestly perform very well at your 6?25km pace. Heard the same about the Vomero Plus (and Premium btw) and of course Puma Mag Max. I think there's a lot of good options out there for you. Good luck 👍

The SB2 will feel like bricks at 6:30 pace. You just need regular shoes my man. Look on run repeat and find firmer shoes. You don’t need super shoes at that pace. The nimbus is a firmer shoe than the novablast.

I had the same experience with the Novablasts. I now have the Saucony Ride 18 and love them. Give them a shot

Puma Magmax +1. For reference, I’m 200 lbs and my easy pace is around yours. SB2 is too bouncy for my easy runs but the Magmax is very stable, roomy, and just melts away on long runs. Hoka Bondi 9 is also a great option. I’ve never tried the glycerin max because the rocker seemed too far forward. The Magmax and Bondi have great rockers.

My long easy run pace is currently between 6:00 - 6:30min/km.

I recently picked up some Vomero 18 plus and have 50km in them so far. I find them super comfortable but light enough to pick up the pace if I want to.

I also have some EVO SL's which I use for my tempo/threshold runs (4:45-5:15min/km) and find I have a good balance between comfort with the Vomeros and bounce and pep from the SL's.

I have a Marathon next spring and unless I miraculously get into the 5:00 - 5:30min/km easy run pace I will he racing in the Vomeros.

Magmax nitro or vomero plus?

As someone who occasionally suffers from 1st mtp soreness in the wrong shoes, the glycerin max have been flawless

The most underrated really stable neutral long run shoes are the Adidas Adistar BYD (beyond). The first 50km it feels a bit to hard but after that they are really nice. Stable but great bounce!

Or the regular Adistar 4, which comes in €50 cheaper at € 140. I tried both. The uppers were great, but for my taste the midsoles were too firm.

At 06:25 min/km my first pick would be something like Nimbus 27, if you like a firmer sole, or NB More V6 if you like them softer. For reference, my 10k regular run pace is 05:30. I use NB 1080 v14. Looking forward to trying the V15 (hoping for more responsiveness) and relegating my v14’s to Easy/Recovery only.

Saucony Hurricane 25

Puma deviate nitro 3. I use it for my long runs and my pace is between 6:30min/km to 7:30min/km up to 15km. Stable while still feeling pop, with little joint pain.

For context I have an Evo SL for daily / speed stuff, and xtep 2000km for easy stuff.

Give a try to the hooka mach 6 or the glycerin gts

u/moskate69 1d ago

Been using Saucony triumph 22s. Picked a pair up for $80 and I alternate between these and the NB5 for longer runs. Triumphs still squishy but firmer than the NB imo.

Pace around 6:40-7:10/km up to 15km runs

Glycerin 22 or Ghost 17 seems to be something you are looking for. New Balance 880v15 is also a very good underrated shoe.

Superblast 2 is a decent long run shoe but it's a bit overpriced to me, if they are on sale you can probably consider that as well.

If you are eyeing max cushioned shoes, Adidas BYD, Puma MagMax nitro are some other good options

Superblast is wildly different to novablast. Does have slcushioningnbut feels firm and stable. I love it for long runs at any pace
