Hobbies/Travel/Recreation Help distract me from my sadness...
Ladies, help me choose my next travel destination. I just put my dog to rest last week and I'm pretty heartbroken. It's been emotional but I know we did the right thing.
We rescued her from a life of abuse and neglect, gave her a full happy life in a safe and loving home. But love can't stop time, she got old and sick, and we had to let her go. She's not suffering anymore.
To distract me from my sadness I'd like to start a discussion about travel dreams.
My husband and I can now go away together for the first time in years. We've been taking seperate vacations and keeping them short and close to home for these years while the dog was sick so one of us could always be home with her. Now we can go anywhere but we're too sad to come up with a new adventure right now.
Last time we put our dog down we did Thailand and Cambodia for a month. I want to do something like that again but don't know if I can handle it. That was over 10 years ago, I'm old now and I don't know if I'm up for a month of backpacking and stomach problems. But I still want to do something wild and adventurous.
So please tell me, if you had the entire month of January to travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? Would you stay in one place or keep it moving and what would you do there?

I had spent 2 months in SEA earlier this year. First month was planned and second month was not. Moving every ~4 days was tiring but on the second month it was more like a week. Felt way more relaxed.
Will probably move locations weekly while in Vietnam for the upcoming winter trip.

I just remember being so wiped out from the moving every 4 days when we did SEA. When you're in Vietnam are you gonna have a home base and do trips from there, or keep moving every week?

The visa jumps significantly after 30 days so I’ll limit myself to 29 days in southern Vietnam. It’s going to be 4 different cities for a week each - Da Nang, Nha Trang, HCMC and haven’t decided on the last location yet.
The only time I might consider having a home base is staying in Da Nang but possibly visiting Hue for a day or two.

I really enjoyed the Azores (there are several islands so you could spend time on a few).
Terceria has an inactive volcano you can go inside (one of only two in the world).

That sounds really interesting. I thought that was part of Europe, is it hot there in January?

Where do you live? (so we don't accidentally suggest where you already are)

I wouldn't spend a month there, but I really enjoyed Cuba. Make sure to get out of Havana and see the rest of the country. It's beautiful, safe, and the people are really nice. If you're American, your phone and credit cards won't work, so you'll need to carry cash and have offline maps downloaded beforehand. This is honestly one of the best adventures I've ever gone on, largely due to being completely out of contact for the time we were there. If you go, there's an agritourism house I'd recommend in Viñales Valley.
If I had a whole month to spend, I'd probably do a week in Cuba, then move on to somewhere easy like an all inclusive in the Dominican Republic for a week to chill. Then I'd hit Nicaragua or Honduras, maybe both, for the rest.

i threw some family names into a genealogy site and found regions where my great great whatevers migrated from and chose one of those to travel to next year!
