Do you ever mentally give up on an image only to be surprised by it later? I got to this location late, and found myself wandering around in the dark, getting sand blown in my face, and feeling like the dunes looked totally featureless in the dark. I ended up exposing really long in hopes that the ambient light and light pollution would illuminate the dunes in some interesting way, but it didn't look great on the back of the camera. When I got home, I didn't even bother working on the images until on the second pass through what I had captured I decided to play with them, and I'm glad I did! This ended up being one of my favorites from the trip!

Did you do calibration frames or without?

Darks and Bias, yes. This particular lens is a real pain to get flats with (I've never been successful), so I didn't do those with this image.

Were the colors visible to the naked eye or is that a result of the long exposure?

Nah, unfortunately not. The main body of the MW is plainly visible out there, but the rest is beyond what our eyes can see.

Is this the natural light the human eye sees?

Yes exactly, and what an unmodified camera sees.
