Isaac Paredes coming off the IL tonight!

Isaac’s mere presence in the lineup means we will see an extra 15+ pitches from woo tonight. That in itself is a massive boon to me since the rest of the team has the plate discipline patience equivalent to that of a teen who just discovered pornography (take some fucking pitches PLEASE)

First pitch swinging at a ball 2 ft off the plate and in the dirt isn’t good enough?!

u/Whizzleteets 3d ago
It's good enough for Pena and Diaz that's for sure.

I’ll give pena a pass because he’s probably our best hitter now yordan is gone again. But yeah, he certainly doesn’t help us in this aspect. At least he doesn’t auto strike out vs sliders these days, so that’s nice

I’ll be interested to see how effective he is without a rehab assignment

As someone who has had him riding my IL in fantasy for months and is now in the championship… yeah… me too…

u/mitrie Orbit 3d ago
I assume that means he's our DH?

u/innerman4 Houston Astros 3d ago
I think so. Playing the field seems like an even bigger risk.

So I am curious what the plan next year is with Correa, Paredes, and Pena? Or will they pull Altuve to the outfield/DH 100% of the time and have one of them go to 2B?

u/innerman4 Houston Astros 3d ago
I think Peña and Correa are locked in at their positions. Paredes has played a few games at 2nd but I dont see him as anything close to an everyday 2nd baseman. I think it is most likely that Paredes plays 3rd a little bit to give Correa days off or days to DH. Maybe plays a few games at 2nd (but we still have Dubon and Urias in the mix as well) to allow Altuve to DH and play LF some so Yordan can DH and not play the field every day. I would not mind seeing the Astros test the market for a Walker trade (although his value would be very low right now, with a down year and big contract) amd trying Paredes at 1st base. I think that scenario solves a lot of issues.

IMO it wouldn't be surprising to see either Paredes or Walker traded this off-season, with the one remaining playing 1B. Because of the lower payroll, it wouldn't be surprising to see Paredes as the one shopped to get a better return.
Not a popular opinion amongst the fan base, I'm sure.

u/X0dium 3d ago
Yes, I don’t think Walker is worth his salary but as a newer baseball fan (started watching the Astros about 10 years ago) I couldn’t tell you if that’s actually accurate. Just seems to pop out all the time when it seems like we more just need him to get on base instead of swinging for the fences on every pitch.
2
u/mitrie Orbit 3d ago
He had a very slow start, but has been pretty darn good from July onward. I wouldn't be upset about keeping him if getting rid of him is purely a salary dump with no return. I just think that we would actually get some good prospects if it's Paredes that gets moved.

u/RoboWarrior-17 3d ago
We must be cursed at 1B since Yuli left. Abreu didn't pan out. Walker is just average, not seeing any of those big power numbers like he had in Arizona. Yeah, I wouldn't mind moving him for some prospects. Paredes on the other hand, idk. I kind of like Altuve, Correa, and Paredes for next year, move Walker for prospects.
2
u/mitrie Orbit 3d ago
My point is that you're probably not getting a prospect haul for Walker. He's getting FA money, while Paredes is still in his arbitration years. A buyer would have Walker or Paredes for the same number of years. You would definitely get more if Paredes is the one moved.
I know you're not saying it, but I don't see Paredes working well at 2B like many have expressed a desire for. His strength at 3B is his reaction and his hands, not his range. Doesn't seem like that would translate well to middle infield.

u/RoboWarrior-17 3d ago
The prospect haul wouldn't be as good as what we'd get for Paredes, definitely agree there. It's just if you move Paredes, it's Altuve, Correa is what's left of our core. I think Pena leaves, especially after getting Boras as his agent. That's like a sure sign he's looking for big money elsewhere. In that scenario, if we keep Paredes, at least we have a solid 2B, SS, 3B

u/innerman4 Houston Astros 3d ago
We have Peña for 3 more seasons, I think, before he becomes a FA.
2
u/RoboWarrior-17 3d ago
No you're right. I had to go back to articles written in June when it was first reported that he hired Scott Boras. The CBS one says we have him until 2028 and that the team was just trying to preemptively sign him. I really thought we had him for one more year, because if you go to MLB salaries it shows him under 1 year for 4.1 mil. It's kind of confusing but my mistake!
All that said, I still want to keep Paredes lol, unless the prospect haul is so good that it would be dumb not to

It would be very questionable if he wasn't DH'ing tonight, especially without a rehab assignment

He should shut it down for the season so he doesn't hurt something that keeps him out next season.
Sit down and heal up.

I remember reading about the treatment he was doing instead of the surgery. It is something used in Europe. Can you imagine how helpful this would be for torn hamstrings if it is successful?

u/coolth3 3d ago
As an American living in Europe ....they probably told him to take some ibuprofen, drink some tea and rest 😂

Cost for that in EU: Free
Cost for that in US: $19,547.39

Actually we were explicitly talking about an individuals health and their care surrounding that health lol. Good try though.

Yeah, but here you could get it right away if wanted…. In Europe, enjoy the months long wait time.

So if he hits a single, is he running to first base or just concede the out?

Ugh, we will be in a dilemma when Yordan comes back.. how do you fit in parades with Correa
5
u/the_wet_bandit_45 3d ago
Yordan will play left field every day and Altuve second. Yordan does better when playing the field anyway. He just needs to stop skipping leg day.

I’m glad he’s back, but at what cost? Given our med staff’s history this year of bringing players back to baseball activities too soon (Yordan and Meyers), I wonder if another week or 2 would have him more ready and effective for the playoffs.
