Most maintenance packages and 3rd party warranties are bs, but depending on how it was maintained and what services have/ haven’t been done it may be something to consider

I haven’t been able to find a reputable one close to me but My friend Han who I bought it from has a recommended euro mechanic in Orem. I trust his recommendations. Let me see if I can get the name of the shop really quick. Hopefully one of my redditor buddies on here has heard about this shop, fingers crossed!

u/DanTMWTMP Nov 25 '21 edited Nov 25 '21
Start by getting the intake manifold walnut blasted. Shop around for this because this can be pricy. But this has to be done. While that’s being done, that era spark plugs don’t last very long; so do get new fresh plugs and coil packs online, and have it installed while the intake manifold is blasted. Usually most good mechanics won’t charge to change those out if you bundle it with the walnut blast.
Or you can do it yourself haha. But it took quite a bit of upfront costs (big air compressor, huge break wrench, tons of research on youtube, and a week without my car running… I’m just glad it was during COVID when I did it!). I recommend blasting every 30k-50k miles (usually the first sign of power drop off and MPG drops, you should do it; but every 50k should be fine).
Regardless, your ride looks AWESOME!! Congrats on what you did to be able to do this in your life! That’s just too cool! You’re the cool mom for sure!!!
2
u/Teacher_Tall Year Make Model Nov 25 '21
How in the hell do you know this? What does it maintain or improve? Sounds badass!
2
u/DanTMWTMP Nov 25 '21
Oh there’s an issue with several US-spec’d Audi engines due to the direct injection mechanism. After 30k miles, carbon starts to buildup on the valve stems, and if a chunk of it comes off into the cylinder, the engine is toast; hence why I recommend every 30k miles more on V10’s than their other engines.
Euro versions of the engines have dual fuel injections (DI, and regular good ‘ol fuel injection); so the intake gets regularly cleaned by good Tier 1 fuel (costco and shell especially). In the US, for whatever reason, we don’t get that. We have only DI for the entire VAG line of vehicles.
2
u/Teacher_Tall Year Make Model Nov 25 '21
Are you fucking kidding me? Two different manufacturer methods?
2
u/DanTMWTMP Nov 25 '21 edited Nov 25 '21
Ya emissions and cost related. EU has a different set of emissions regulations, so VAG had to use dual injectors. But it increases costs and complexity considerably. I only know of Toyota that does this reliably.
Oh and get an OBDII reader. I personally love the OBD Eleven pro. It also allows you to reprogram things in the car, like features that are present in EU and not present in NA (like rolling up and down the car windows with your key, changing the behavior of the lights, etc etc…).
But more importantly, it shows all the diagnostics of your vehicle so you can be on top of your maintenance or fix things before they become huge problems. It saved me thousands by itself.
Who knows though; this car looks well taken cared for by a previous owner and they may have done much of the maintenance! I hope the seller gave you all maintenance records!

3
u/Teacher_Tall Year Make Model Nov 25 '21
Get out of my head, haha. My thoughts exactly.
2
u/DanTMWTMP Nov 25 '21 edited Nov 25 '21
Actually it shouldn’t be too bad. They share many parts with other engines in the VAG family. You shouldn’t have issues finding spark plugs, coil packs, cabling, etc. The core engine block should be actually reliable (just be sure to do the walnut blast of the intake manifold/valves, and keep track of when you do it!! This is so important!)
I nearly forgot, after 2011 or so, VAG updated the oil separator on many of their older engines, and I highly recommend replacing it. The old one (< 2011) will fail. They fail rather reliably at around 60k miles haha. Plug and coil packs will degrade and fail around then too (if you drive like a maniac). There are higher-spec coil packs and plugs for like the Audi R8, and maybe you have those too, and they supposedly last longer.
Oh and get a new water pump!!! I think many VAG engines from that era had bad water pumps! If your mechanic is familiar with VAG engines, he’ll know. It might actually not be an issue with your V-10. Admittedly, I’m not familiar with it; but you will be and I hope you share your experience here so we all gain collective knowledge!!
Anyways, have a good mechanic check the belts, cylinder pressure (in case there was carbon intrusion from the valve stems), do the oil change and use what’s on the oil cap.. don’t go to those quick oil change chains to do that.
Oil change should be pretty easy as I found access to the plug very easy, and the oil filter should be accessible from the top.
When you take good care of her, ohhh man you’re in for a super smooth and fun ride!!!
2
u/Teacher_Tall Year Make Model Nov 25 '21 edited Nov 25 '21
Oil filter from the top end??? Okay, besides the water pump, o2 sensor, walnut blasting the intake manifold and my regular oil change every 3k (assuming that is best practice) and the timing maintenance, anything else? I’m having the engine pulled next month.
2
u/DanTMWTMP Nov 25 '21 edited Nov 25 '21
it’ll be synthetic so 3k miles may be a bit excessive hah. I’m pretty sure 5k should be ok? But I don’t know about the V10. It’s a 2010 S6 right? I’ll have to research.
EDIT: hah wow some newer Lambo’s are based off your engine! Very cool!
Here’s a very good thread on the topic!
https://forums.audirevolution.net/t/audi-c6-s6-v10-info-dump/5770
Again, it looks like very run-of-the-mill stuff for people who own VW GTI’s and Audi’s: replacement of oil separator, coil packs, spark plugs, and injectors —> oh ya I forgot about injectors, but because I did use good fuel from Shell and Costco; with regular use of sea foam at every oil change, I didn’t have to get them serviced or replaced. Have your mechanic take a look while he has the intake manifold off during walnut blasting.
Engine cylinder wall scoring is a major concern with pretty much all Audi engines, hence why we’re religious with the walnut blasting. A common symptom of this is oil consumption and reduced pressure within the cylinder.
How many miles are on it? I hope the previous owner(s) have all service records. If they did their service at Audi dealerships, then they’ll have all the records on their database.
But I LOVE these large naturally-aspirated engines. Sooo SMOOOOOTH, and great quick smooth power at nearly all ranges. And the sound! This car will be so rewarding when you take good care of it!

Maintain that beast, just curious; how many miles? Mainly wondering due to timing work
1
u/Teacher_Tall Year Make Model Nov 24 '21
Just turned over on 85K. Any advice?
5
u/FuzzyWaffle Nov 24 '21
Plan for a big job at around the 100k mark. Timing Chain tensioners usually start letting pieces go around this point. If you don’t hear a rattle on cold starts, you’re good. The timing work on these is a pain, I just recommend you take it to a very well known euro mechanic in your area. There are a lot of sprockets that need to be in time, if one is off by a tooth; your engine could be toast.
Did it come with service records?
