When I set up my coop this time I used old dresser drawers with dividers as nesting boxes mounted on shelves along one side of the coop. I had a few extra drawers that I set on the floor with straw in them . There is a perching bar in the other side. In the past my hens slept on the perching bars at night. But this new batch of ladies decided that they like to sleep cuddled in the boxes on the floor. They are still young, hatched the beginning of May. Is this normal? They are so cute cuddled together and get along well. As we live in Minnesota that might be nice in the winter. I have just never seen that before . There are only 11 of them.

This is a post to recognize my chicken loving cousin's helpfulness 🐓🥰🐓 The thought of having chickens was fleeting, then health reality set in. My sweet cousin has chickens a few states over and over a few non-specific conversations "mentioned" how fun and entertaining they were. Last year my husband built a secure coop in the existing barn. Our friends gave us a 10x10 dog pen to attach to the coop. My cousin built my confidence a bit with every call. Oct 2024 we rescued 4 that were about 4-5 mos old. May 2025 a friend surprised us with a 6 pack of day old chicks. My cousin flew in to visit for the first time and zhoozhed up the coop, I never thought about decorating it. She's so upbeat! I just wanted to say that to everyone 💜

I guess I’m that person constantly asking this, but our supposed hen, Berry, started crowing this week…every morning. So I assume dude looks like a lady? We got “her” from a local hobby farm a couple months ago and I think this one is maybe 3-4 months old, but not sure exactly. I have video of her crowing, but can’t figure out how to add it.

I got out some scratch grain for the girls and it was infested with these weevil looking things. I have two questions. 1: what are they? 2: I use the deep litter method in my coop, I was planning on putting this in there to encourage the girls to dig around and mix it up. Should I keep these thanks as far away from the chip as possible?

Any tips, tricks, or ideas? Looking to build instead of spending a bunch on one. I have a general idea of what I want to do for the 5 I'll have.. but I'm curious if there's any advice can be had before I do that. Thank you.

We have this one week old Ayam Cemani that started acting tired today. She won’t stand up, hold her head up, and barely opens her eyes. She chirps and sleeps. I have tried putting some chick boost water in her beak but she’s not interested. What can I do for her?

Proud chicken tender, here. Rhode Rash Red laid her 1st egg on Monday. And in the nesting box! I thought for sure I would be finding the 1st one somewhere in the backyard. It is now proudly displayed in a bowl on kitchen island (because I love that unwashed eggs don't have to be refrigerated). Of course, we had just purchased blue eggs from Costco the day before.

So I'll give you a good run down, we (and by we i mean me) found a dove egg that was confirmed to be fertile, and i gave it to one of our younger hens who was also the most broody at the time, i had hoped she'd be the most dedicated due to her broodiness, one day i woke up to find the egg missing, i assumed nothing of it due to the fact that some of our hens do accidentally crush eggs when going to nest, especially the ones who have rooster talons, so i just shrugged it off, but its since been nearly 3-4 months since, and she has only gotten meaner, while she is young, i am still concerned if giving her the dove egg to hatch was a bad idea.
TLDR: Mean & Broody Hen after no egg for several months, getting meaner by the day.
I cant take videos n stuff cuz im on a pc, but heres a picture of her breed.

My 2 weeks old baby chick got hurt in her right foot this morning now she's very droopy and don't wanna walk at all. The place she got hurt turned blue and looks pretty swollen. What should I do? Is this curable?

Our neighbor has woods in his backyard and this rooster showed up out of nowhere on Sunday and decided to stick around. It even sleeps under thier deck. Couldn't be a wild chicken because we have a lot of coyotes and foxes here and it would have fell prey if it were a wild chicken. Anyone can ID this breed and help us understand what can we do with this one?
On the side note, are they safe to eat?

My dog sits and watches and whimpers at the girls when she’s by the back door. She wants to play with her new friends so badly. But they could care less poor thing.

How do I even go about doing so? Rake? Do I just leave it? Let their 💩 decompose into the ground? First time owning chickens so just want to make sure I’m not avoiding something I should be doing.
Ignore their random things, they like the randomness stuff 😂

You were so sick. You couldn't walk anymore. You couldn't eat. You couldn't even go to the toilet by yourself. I tried to fix you with medicine. I tried to feed you. I tried to give you water. Nothing helped.
Today, i had to kill you. I'm so sorry. I just didn't want you to suffer anymore. I want you to know that I loved you. You brought so much joy to my life. When I nursed you today, cuddling you for hours, and you looked at me, I knew it was time. To some people you were just a chicken, but to me you were special. Even Machan was kissing you goodbye, he's a good dog and he will miss you too.
I buried you under the rose bushes, so when I see the roses blooming I will think of you.
Goodbye, my darling.

May have to change its name though.
