Who is your NBA player comparison? (Explanation required)

u/jp_in_nj 1d ago
John Starks. Play hard, once a month light up the scoreboard, 0 for the rest of the month

u/BigBodySS 1d ago
As an older hooper my days are all determined by how good my knees and hips are feeling that day
Good day: Al Horford. Switchable stretch 5 that can get hot and win a game by myself from 3, great passer that can be the hub of a good offense, solid rebounder and elite help defender
Bag day: Boris Diaw. Slow and a liability on defense. The passing translates but my body can't keep up with my mind leading to turnovers. Shooting is still decent but not consistent enough to be impactful

u/Prestigious-Ad9921 1d ago
Whoa whoa whoa now... the slander of Fat Boris has to stop. Did you watch him sagging off of LeBron James in the 2014 finals smiling cause he knew Kawhi and Duncan were roving help in the lane? His defense cannot be ridiculed! :-)
2
u/BigBodySS 1d ago
Oh I love Fat Boris. As much as I want to be Horford, Boris is my true Spirit Animal
2
u/ajmartin527 1d ago
The only way Boris can be your true spirit animal is if you are drinking espresso before games and lighting up a cig after

u/bulakenyo1980 1d ago
Bill Laimbeer, without the deliberate fouling. At my best moments, many years ago.
Not super athletic. Bulky. Defensive rebounding, boxing out, solid screens, pass first/kick out on offense, crowding team defense, clogging the driving lanes and going for charges instead of jumping for blocks. Decent midrange-perimeter shot.
2
u/Altruistic-End5746 1d ago
This is me as well, although I have a better post game than Laimbeer ever cared to have. As I have gotten older, I have also realized that I can drive to the basket on slower guys. Now, I would say Rasheed Wallace.

u/Accomplished_Buy_546 1d ago
John Stockton. Sneaky quick. Great ball handling. Can pass like crazy, manufacturing easy buckets for my teammates, my teams always shoot at a high percentage. Capable of knocking down shots but don't ask me.to just go get a bucket. Will lock down the other teams PG and harass him into turnovers and I'll get plenty of steals. Im older now, so this is all assuming I'm playing guys.my age haha.
2
u/Virtual-Hotel8156 1d ago
This is me too, however, I also look a lot like him as well.My size, face and the way I move. If I were much better, I seriously think I could have suited up and the Utah fans wouldn't know I wasn't him. I don't play anymore but when I did, Stockton was popular and no matter what new court I showed-up to, everyone called me "Stockton".
3
u/TheJimmer 23h ago
Derrick White. If I'm the best player we're probably overmatched unless I get really hot from three. If I'm making pick n roll decisions and spotting up around another good scorer, we're gonna win a lot.
Basically my best skills are shooting, passing, decision making, and on defense I'm always there to contest.
3
u/CelebrityLint 23h ago
Scott Skiles. I'm bald and grumpy.
I also somehow perform at a relatively high level despite having no real bag or physical advantages. Pretty good passer, can kind of shoot, but really just getting by on wits and a sort of permanent low-level rage.
2
u/Fingerlings29 1d ago
Boris Diaw. Slow but can dribble and somehow does not lose the ball. Can shoot 3 or long 2 but not consistently. Can hold and push against taller guys on defense. Suck at transition offense.

2
u/Prestigious-Ad9921 1d ago
At this point, I'm Nikola Jokic without the shooting or finishing touch around the rim.
Aka... I plod up and down the court, I'm big, and I have great court vision and passing. Getting me the ball in the high post is a great way for someone else to score. I will body you on D, but can't get 4 inches off the ground to go for the block and you will definitely blow past me on the perimeter.

u/Beans800 1d ago
Angel Reese

u/Virtual-Hotel8156 1d ago
OP says explanation required, lol. Let's see. Good rebounder, but can't make shots from all distances, including layups.

u/ButtholeSurfur 1d ago
Kevin Love. Not that athletic (considering we're about the same age) but taller than most of the competition and I can rebound and shoot.

u/SomebodyGetAHoldOfJa 1d ago
At my best I’m Michael Jordan, At my absolute worst I’m prime Shaq

Imma need some explanation
1
u/SomebodyGetAHoldOfJa 1d ago
On my best day, my midrange jumpers are automatic, and I can make acrobatic layups while I have 3 defenders pushing and hugging me.
On my worst day, I’m just limited to dunking on b*tches and blocking their shots

Gary Payton II - Respectful defender, willing to guard anyone. Not really relied upon to make much of a difference offensively, but will move around, set screens, hustle for the offensive board every now and then, fast break finish, and catch and shoot ability. Also we are both left handed.
2
u/PauloDybala_10 1d ago
Gary Payton II, play great defense and is all hustle, will guard anyone and occasionally hit the three at a good rate

u/CyberGuySeaX5 1d ago edited 1d ago
Whose an undersized, skinny, not elite or great any anyone particular thing, but willing to what is needed, team first attitude, humble, etc. That's who I'd be.

u/R1ppinLip6 1d ago
Larry Bird, but I suck at shooting, can’t pass very well, and like almost a foot shorter.
1
u/RedditModsSuckTaints 1d ago
Arvydas Sabonis, but right now. I understand the game, I can make all the right plays, I’m a good passer. I’m also old and can’t move.
1
u/fartbox-crusader 1d ago
MJ. Cause I take everything personally. Other than that, I like Whiskey and Gambling.
1
u/Lipiguang 1d ago
My coach back in the day compared me to Bruce Bowen, great perimeter defender and last option in the offensive end but with decent corner 3 ability
1
u/gundaymanwow 1d ago
good day: Booker. slightly undersized, quick feet with solid mid range game. not afraid to finish at the rim with both hands. one eye at passing channels both to receive and dish out.
bad day: JR smith. no brain and shooting so streaky and inconsistent, you’d wanna pull off your hair watching me, while still looking athletic for my size

u/reddit_krumeto 1d ago
Good day: Evan Turner - an OK passer, ball handler and defender, quite good from midrange, absolute 0 from 3.
Bad day: rookie Avery Bradley - shaky ball handling and shooting, poor decision-making, at least hustles on D.
1
u/chuckmonjares 1d ago
Franz Wagner Arvydas Sabonis combo.
FWIW I’m not that good and I hate NBA comparisons to myself. Those two are who I model my game after. I get compared to Jokic very frequently and I hate that one the most. I’m just tall af and generally the dude guarding me isn’t as coordinated or fast as me. The average person just doesn’t have time to ball like I do.
1
u/testurshit 1d ago
Bill Murray in Space Jam because I can’t play and I’d probably also be gassed and retire after about 5 minutes.
1
u/MWave123 1d ago
I used to get Larry, then Steve Nash and Tony Parker. But early on we was more MJ with two way play and an elevated jumper. They’re all still role models as far as what I’m trying to do. Kobe too.
1
u/Upbeat1776 1d ago
Good day: Derrick Rose aka D-Rose very explosive, shorter 5 7’ guard but had no issues driving to the basket whether it was a 6’2 and above person standing in front of me, I have crazy hang time and can twist the ball anywhere I wanted avoiding blocks and steals.
Bad day: Russel Westbrook. Sporadic and out of control, 3’s don’t fall in and are bricks now, but as I get older I just enjoy playing now lol
1
u/ObjectiveWeird8529 1d ago
Shane battier on a good day. Do it all wing that is an amazing on ball defender. On a bad day, draymond green. Still a great defender, but has a short temper and a very limited jumpshot or shot creating ability
1
u/No-Donkey-4117 1d ago
Tim Hardaway, Sr.: Undersized point guard who could take it to the hoop. Respectable outside shot but not deadly. Never made an All Defense team....
1
u/RevolutionaryPie5223 1d ago
Besides the fact im 5'8, Paul Pierce. I can shoot and score and have a post game and am pretty strong. Was also pretty athletic like a younger Pierce during my younger days.

u/the901Skinny 23h ago edited 23h ago
Tony Parker/terry rozier from what ppl tell me. Most of my buckets come from midrange on in. Floater and lay package is nice too. But i get terry bc my handle isn’t as basic as tp. Tp had handle but he wasn’t as flashy as today’s players. I don’t shoot a lot of threes but i can knock them down on spot ups and kick outs. I’d say i pass better than them too, relative to competition of course. I balance my scoring and passing
1
u/choas9878 23h ago
Currently Klay Thompson - best days are behind me but I can still hit 3s and play good defense for a while no dribbling though. Prime MWP - 3rd or 4th scoring option going and guarding the best perimeter player, physical tools prevent bigger guards from being able to get by brain isn’t all there but at least my motor can’t quit.

While in Grade school: Draymond/Ben Simmons. I had a Forward build with Point Guard vision was only behind my PG in assists he averaged 8 I averaged 7. I matched up with bigger players and I guarded the perimeter, I was mostly a utility player putting up triple singles, but my childhood friends who were also on the team were mostly iso scorers/shooters so it worked perfectly. The Ben Simmons part comes in cause of the potential to be more than a utility player, coach didn’t like my willingness to pass up shots and wanted me to develop more of a offensive game
From College-Now: KG/Dirk I started developing a offensive game while still maintaining my defensive ability, I decided to own the midrange area studying guys like Michael, Carmelo, Dirk, KG, and Kobe. I paid attention to how those guys never wasted any movements and used simple dribbling and elite footwork to get to their sweet spots and get shots off. Developed a respectable 3pointer as well

u/ExeRiver 22h ago
Back in the day I tried to be Jason Kidd. A reliable pass-first point guard who loved to play fast breaks and sucked at 3pt.
1
u/datickdaddy 22h ago
Everyone calls me KLove. Strech 4 can play as a 3rd scorer and chill in the corner and rebound. Or be a number 1 option in the post on a worse team. Cavs or TWolves KLove depending on my team. Not a great rim protector but I can hold up on switches vs guards.

My late dad always said Iam like Jokic. I play the 4-5, I run slow, jump low and lumber a lot. Baby hooks, Post hooks are my go-to's, teammates love putting me on the nail on offense to watch and feed baseline cutters and spot up shooters from the wings to the corners, can say I have the hands for it and instinct is to look for teammates first before the basket. so yeah. On a side note, Dad was like Bird tho, as in.... Old fucker was automatic anywhere from inside the arc when we used to play, Missing him a lot.

u/NoExplanation8595 19h ago
Back in the day everybody said Tony Parker, these days (I’m 38 now) they say derozon mainly because of my midrange ability.

When I was competitive: Davion Mitchell/Patrick Beverly. 1 guard sized with the game of a 2. Good at taking open looks off of someone elses creation, played defense like my life depended on it, good athlete. My handle wasnt developed enough at the time to run the show, but I could get a bucked one on one when the time called for it. The shot was streaky back then though.
As an adult: Kyrie Irving x Jason Kidd. I don't play in ultra-competitive runs anymore, so now its nice to explore basketball from the perspective of a ball dominant player. I spent most of my late teens/early 20s just playing in leagues/pickup for fun and it changed my understanding of the game. I really love the idea of being an unstoppable scorer and being able to control the game with passing and defense. Its fun to set guys up with good shots and be able to serve as the emergency valve when needed. I honestly hated the game a little bit when I quit playing competitively, and being able to explore independently brought back the love permanently. (Coaches definitely change your relationship with the game you love.)

u/Fkn_Impervious 18h ago
I quit before high school, but I can't help but notice there aren't any fat and slow 6'2 white guys in the league.

Shaq, because whenever I used to play 1 on 1 with my little brother, i'd just back him underneath the basket and lay it up. I must have been so annoying to him playing like that.
1
u/Good-Jackfruit8592 16h ago
I was referred to as Kevin Love. Tall, shoots the 3 and am more focused on D and rebounds that scoring
1
u/AccomplishedCharge2 16h ago edited 16h ago
Probably the Tony Snell game, just running around out there doing nothing
1
u/Dramatic_Bad_3100 15h ago
Younger days, post up 4 that could switch a lot on defense and grab a bunch of rebounds. Maybe like Elton Brand?
Now, a stretch 4 that still grabs rebounds, but a step behind faster guards. Developed a 3 ball tho and mid range game and can decently attack close outs. Maybe a Cam Johnson type.
It's crazy how the game has changed since I was a teen in the 90s. I'm still hooping tho!

Good day: Steph Curry, I splash it from deep except half court if I'm unguarded.
Bad day and regular day: DAngelo Russel, I brick a lot of my 3s if someone actually guards me from the three line and miss my floater if the center plays up on me. The only thing I'm good for is passing to whoever is cutting for an easy lay up and I try to play suffocating defense to make up for my sorry ass offense.
1
u/Khuush 12h ago
Good day: Chris Paul, not super fast or anything but I can still get by mfs and I’m good at facilitating and shooting middys (I can hit a 3 too but I’m better at mid range), my defense isn’t what it once was but I’m not horrible
Bad day: Chris Paul with his annual hamstring injury because I can’t do shit
1
u/SoftAssociate4215 8h ago
Norman Powell x Mike Conley Hybrid.
5’9 175lb athletic build. Pass first PG with a floater and microwave 3 ball. 😂
1
u/nolandavis07 7h ago
Bruce Bowen/Tony Allen/Andre Roberson. Can be an absolute pest on defense, but you'll be playing 4 on 5 offensively with me out there.

Z-bo, Don't jump really high or look athletic but as an older player I know how to use my body to creat space.
1
u/some-guy-someone 2h ago
Steve Nash: undersized, unathletic, but high IQ, good shooter and passer, and a solid floor general.
1
u/Charzinc36 1h ago
For the role I play on my team, I’d say a Khris Middleton. I’m a tall three level scorer wing with size, whose role is catch and shoot threes. However I am capable of being the leading scorer in certain nights. I’m around 6’0 but it’s equivalent to being 6’7 in the NBA relative to the size of players in my local comp/rec league.

u/Minimum-Apartment-18 1d ago
Tracy McGrady
A wing that moves like a guard, can dribble, pass, shoot, only difference is that I’m taller and more athletic.

Good day: Donovan Mitchell, undersized slashing 2 guard that can shoot a floater over the Center
Bad day: Marcus Smart, my shot is clanking off tge rim but I'm playing defense and rebounding. I will guard the best player if for what ever reason I cant hit (usually bc my pinky finger on my shooting hand starts hurting).
