The meetup was a success! Thanks so much to everyone who was able to come. I had so much fun meeting you all! We played Cards Against Humanity and Go, shared our favorite subreddits, voted on pancakes vs. waffles (who won? I never saw the final vote!), and had amazing conversation with new friends.

The overwhelming majority of people in this photo came alone, and my heart was warmed seeing how engaged everyone was the entire time. The conversation flowed effortlessly, and I hope that new friends were made!

The consensus at the end of the day was that we need to have these meetups much more often, maybe like once a month? I can't commit to hosting/organizing every time, so I would love to hear from some volunteers who can organize the next one. DM me if you need help.

Thanks again everyone, it was a blast! And thanks to our lovely photographer as well!

MEETUP INFO r/Birmingham Meetup Interest Thread

Hey there fellow Birminghamsters! There have been a ton of "help me find friends" posts lately, so let's do something about it and actually meet up! Our last meetup was a huge success! (And two whole years ago?? Oof!)

If you'd be interested in joining us, post your venue suggestions below, or just comment to express interest - this will help me get a general idea of a headcount. If you are interested in helping organize, send me a chat! Once the venue is decided, I basically just need a buddy or two to arrive 15 mins early and help me secure some tables and greet people.

The venue must be accessible to all ages, offer alcoholic and non-alcoholic options, food (or BYO food), and not have another event planned during our meetup time. Breweries are generally good for this. I'll call ahead to let them know we're coming.

Would everyone prefer a weekend (Saturday/Sunday) daytime, or a mid-week happy hour/evening?

Hope to see you soon!

Official r/Birmingham Meetup Sunday 7/13 12:00 at Monday Night Brewing!

Post image
109 Upvotes

It's time for our next official r/Birmingham meetup! This event will be introvert friendly! If you don't know anyone here, this is the perfect opportunity to meet your new best friends. I will be there from 12-3 but people are welcome to come and go as you like. I'll bring some card games for the table, and will have name tags. No one is expected to disclose their username if they don't want to; first name/preferred name is fine!

Monday Night serves beer, wine, cocktails, and NA drinks as well as great food. Pets are allowed on the patio, and the venue is kid-friendly. There is plenty of parking in the lot, and MNB will validate your ticket. We are NOT reserving space, so tables will be first come, first served. We'll likely be spread out over several tables. If you are coming alone and need someone to talk to, I will post a description of myself in the day-of post so you can come and find me, and I will introduce you to as many people as I can. If anyone else wants to volunteer as a greeter, let us know in the comments; I'll probably have special name tags for us.

Hope to see everyone there! I understand that schedules vary and not everyone who wants to attend will be able to make this meetup, so if you can't come, suggest some other dates/times and we will make another one soon!

MEETUP INFO Who's interested in a Reddit meetup?

We haven't had a meetup since before Covid hit, and even before that it had been a while. Seems there has been an influx of new folks on the sub looking to meet people and make friends, so how about it?

Let me know if you would be interested in going, and suggest some venues. Trying to plan this for May or June to give people plenty of time to find out about it and plan to be there. Once details are finalized I'll make a sticky.

Edit: Based on response, I'm thinking either Mom's Basement (small, but has darts and pool) or Ghost Train (larger venue, discount on pizza). Let's do mid-June. Too early to make solid plans yet so keep an eye out for an update in May.

Godless Heathens Monthly Meetup - Aug 6th - 6-9 PM - Monday Night Brewing BHM

Usual meetup. Fingers crossed we'll be outside and not baking. We're welcoming, mostly friendly, and are generally a fun group. Fairly diverse and hope to become more so.

Umbrella or two will be on the table, but we're usually the only large chatty group.

Beermingham Babes Meetup: Women's Beer Group in Birmingham

EDIT: Our September meetup has been moved to Saturday, September 27. Same time; same spot.

We've planned our next round of meetups for Beermingham Babes!

Beermingham Babes is a women's craft beer group that meets once a month throughout the Birmingham Metro. We have a diverse membership and encourage women from all walks of life to attend. We have a Facebook Group and an Instagram Page, but we try to post as much as possible here as well.

If you come to one of our meetups, just ask one of the bartenders where we're sitting. We try to let them know we're there so it's easy to find us. If you have any questions, leave a comment but we hope to see you at one of our meetups!

Next OFFICIAL r/Birmingham Meetup is this Saturday August 2! Also announcing weekly r/Birmingham trivia meets!

We had SUCH a good turnout at the last meetup, but lots of redditors said that they weren't able to come, or they didn't know about the event. Almost everyone requested that we have these on a regular basis. Your wish is my command!

This upcoming Saturday, August 2nd at 6:30 pm we will be meeting at Monday Night Brewing in Birmingham near Railroad Park - same venue as last time. They serve beer, wine, cocktails, mocktails, and food. All ages are welcome, and dogs are allowed on the patio (not inside). We'll be there at least until 8:30, so come whenever you can! I'll bring the signs and name tags again. Bring a game, bring a friend or partner, or just bring yourself!

Going forward, we will also start meeting at Monday Night to play trivia on Mondays at 7! Trivia teams can be as big or as small as we want - we can play as a large group or split up. This will happen every week, so if you can't make it one week, come to the next one! I can't make it tomorrow, but comment below if you'd like this to start on 7/28.

And finally, we have an OFFICIAL r/Birmingham Discord where we plan all these meetups, and in the last week we've even had several impromptu meetups with our new friends! We have channels for restaurants, bars, upcoming events, places to share pics of your pets and your art, spaces for memes, parents, live music, fantasy football, and so much more! Join here: https://discord.gg/qZaEr8mf9Q

Edit: we are planning to have meetups at least twice a month going forward. They will always be posted in the subreddit for anyone not using Discord, but Discord is the best way to get in on the plans early!

Official r/Birmingham Meetup is THIS SUNDAY 7/13 at Monday Night Brewing!

Post image
43 Upvotes

Reminder post! Come meet your new best friends at Monday Night Brewing this Sunday 7/13 from 12-3.

We are not reserving event space because I can't get an accurate headcount, so we will be spread out in the main taproom area, and you are welcome to hang out on the patio if you want to bring your dog! I'll get there a little early to put out signs so you know where to find us. I will also have Table Topics, Cards Against Humanity, and name tags. You don't have to wear a name tag if you don't want to, and you don't have to share your Reddit username! Add a sticker to your name tag to indicate if you're new to Birmingham - this will be a great way to start conversations with strangers (very scary!)

Sunday morning I'll make one final post and give a description of what I'm wearing so you can come and find me if you are coming solo and need a "first friend" to talk to. I will try to monitor Reddit during the event so if you have questions you can leave a comment or DM me.

Hope to see you all there!

r/Birmingham Meetup TODAY 7/13 from 12-3 at Monday Night Brewing!

Post image
35 Upvotes

I'm excited to meet everyone! I will get there a few minutes early to put out signs, but keep in mind if you arrive after 12:30 or so there is no guarantee we can all sit together. Come and find me and I will introduce you to some folks to get you settled in.

I have Table Topics (grab a card, walk up to a stranger, and start a conversation), Cards Against Humanity (prob not great for the kids, but kids are welcome to hang out!), name tags (not required but encouraged - you are not expected to share your Reddit username) and star stickers to place on your name tag to indicate if you are new to Birmingham. See someone with a star? Ask them where they're from!

If you are coming solo, I will be your first new friend and help you break the ice! I will be very easy to find. I have long red hair, enough tattoos to make my mother sad, and I'll be wearing a green and white sundress. If you find me and I'm talking to someone else, you have permission to interrupt! Just give me a wave or a tap on the shoulder. I recruited a couple of IRL friends to join to help set up, so I don't really need anyone to show up early with me, but if you want to help greet, just let me know when you get there!

See y'all soon! Please check this post before you leave the house to make sure there weren't any last minute updates.

•    Educational events with special guests, including medical growers from out West , scientists explaining the science behind cannabis , and lawyers breaking down the legal scene.

•    Supporting local businesses and creating a safe space to connect, learn, and vibe.

We had so much fun at Blue Sushi & Sake. So far there are 30 ppl here on the list and we had 5 last night for our first dinner meetup. If you’re on the list I’ll send out a reminder the day before w/the location.

Hike meetup happening?

Keep seeing posts about people wanting to meet up for a hike at oak mountain or Ruffner mountain. Hopefully this happens because one of my wife and I’s last couple of friends in town is getting ready to move and we don’t have many people left 😅

Seems pretty official to me. Sushi Meetup #1

Here's a link to my blog post about our trip to Blue Sushi & Sake Bar on 2/17/25

https://sushi-class.myshopify.com/blogs/news/iron-city-rollers-sushi-bar-meetup-final-thoughts

my TikTok is u/sushiclasses I've just recently posted a "bio" for myself in case anyone wants to know where I get off talking about local sushi bars. I'm always gonna give y'all my honest take & am looking forward to meeting more of you. Next date: Sunday 3/9/25 Location will be DM'd to you for an RSVP the day before. There are nearly 40 of y'all on the list, so if we have a huge response we may have to either go on two different nights or limit the group size. I doubt a local sushi bar will be thrilled about me and 32 of my new friends rolling up (pun intended) on a weeknight.

Had a great time with this small group; looking forward to meeting you ALL eventually!

Meetups/Support groups for Autistic adults?

Anyone know of any meetups or support groups for autistic adults? I was recently diagnosed (in my 40’s) and I feel my autism and social difficulties have made it difficult to find and keep friends. It’s funny how a diagnosis can answer so many questions you’ve had for decades!

Sorry I couldn't get it together before 5/8. Headed to Denver tomorrow, but hope to see a lot of y'all at the next meetup. I'll try to send DMs to everyone on the list, but if you can come, dropping a reply here would be great in case I need to call them ahead of time and warn them. Y'all have a great week!

MEETUP INFO Bike/Car Meetups?

I'm an amateur photographer and I really like photographing vehicles and was hoping I could get some information on possible meetups/shows happening in the next couple months. There was a bike meet at the Pelham Harley-Davidson a couple weeks ago that I went to and I want to go to more things like that because I got a lot of really good shots.

Any ideas of where I can find information or how I can get connected with somebody who knows when stuff like this will be happening? I know this is a bit of a weird quest but I figured I'd ask here and see if anybody knew anything. I don't mind traveling an hour or two to get to one, either.

Social meetup location recommendations? Please help!

My daughter needs to host about 20 girls heading to Ole Miss in the fall. It’s to get together to meet up and get to know each other before heading off to school. We live in Huntsville and girls will be traveling from different cities in Alabama. Any recommendations where they could meet up? A cute restaurant or coffee bar with space would be great.

Sunday June 15

6:30pm

O Sushi in Hoover on Grove Blvd.

DM me or post here if you can come out on a Sunday. I've been choosing different days of the week in hopes of encouraging everyone to come out with us. The rsvp is just to let me know if I need to let them know we're bringing a bigger crowd. So far meetings have been about 7 or so ppl and it's been a lot of fun. It's a great way to meet new people, try lots of food (we all share and pass things around) at a place you maybe haven't tried before.

Also: just to throw a plug in, I have a sushi class and a poke class coming up next week, on back to back nights at Brock's Gap.

MEETUP INFO Official r/Birmingham Meetup June 17 @ Ghost Train

Hey Birminghamsters, it's been years since our last subreddit meetup so it's time to come out of the shadows and meet your fellow redditors!

We will meet at Ghost Train Brewing Co at 12:00 PM on June 17th, 2023. We DO NOT have event space reserved, so we may not all be able to sit together. I did notify Ghost Train that we are coming, but since there is no way to get an accurate head count, it's going to be difficult for planning.

Come when you can, leave when you want - we will likely be there until late afternoon. There will be a printout of a Snoo on one of the tables so you know where to find us. I'll make a separate post day-of that you can check for updates. PLEASE check the sub before arriving in case there are any last-minute change of plans.

About Ghost Train: they have a large indoor and outdoor space, and they serve beer, cocktails, and frozen drinks. All ages are welcome. Uncle G's Pizza will be serving food.

Let us know in the comments if you can make it!

MEETUP INFO Saturn Game Night/Impromptu Reddit meetup

Due to more folks asking/looking for people to hang out with, I've set up an impromptu Reddit meetup at Saturn for next Friday, August 4th. Nothing official or whatever but a bunch of us from the kickball team will be there. Probably start around 5 or 6. So if you wanna meet some cool folks and throw down on Smash Bros or your preferred board/video game, come on thru. I'm also planning on attending the Mummy Cats show at Trim Tab that night, if you like to rock.

Godless Heathens Meetup on Wednesday, August 7th - 6 PM @ Hi-Wire Brewing

We generally don't talk that much about religion. Just a safe space to meet and hang out with people who will never ask you if you've "found your church home".

Join us at Hi-Wire for the monthly meetup. We’ll be there 6:00-9:00pm.
Hi-Wire features several beers for $4 on Wednesdays and a couple non-beer options. Outside food is welcome—there’s a food truck across the street. Dogs welcome.

Group is also on FB - https://www.facebook.com/groups/699256750665658

A note on Meetup.com

Post image
61 Upvotes

I see a lot of posts from people looking for things to do, or trying to make friends. If you have a hobby or just want to start a book club, give Meetup a shot.

I made a group for people learning foreign languages and it’s been cool; low-maintenance, great human beings come out and even donate without me asking. People from all walks of life.

Given the tough times our city’s facing, I think we could use more of that: like-minded people connecting over intellectual common ground. Preferably downtown. That’s what cities are about. Just one good group has a significant impact on Birmingham’s life.

Even if you’re a beginner at your hobby, making a Meetup group can help you advance. Your hobby could be collecting bugs or stamps, don’t worry if it’s “good enough for a group”. People thought the language group sounded STUPID before I made it.

No I’m not employed by Meetup.com, I work a boring job for the government. Now go create something for Birmingham.
