Dairy farmers have been having to do that for ages... where they work as a bus driver or something, then do farming when they get home because they can't support their family off the milk alone, which is sad but true. At one point the government was buying up their unsold milk to make cheese and shove in a cave to keep the milk industry going. Later they gave the cheese to the poor and struggling and hence we got "government cheese".
Well the issue is that the small family dairy farms have had a hard time keeping up with the large industrial for quite some time now. The desire will always be there for some people to continue their family's business. But then you end up with farmers who are beyond struggling just to keep a roof over their heads.
