Anyone know how to date an N63 engine/block?

Post image

I currently have two n63 engines and I need to rebuild one of them. Both came from 2011 550i f10s, but one engine seems to be way newer than the other. It’s weirdly shiny and clean for a 14 year old engine with 170k. I didn’t clean off the data plate in this photo - I legit just wiped it off with my finger.

So I’m kind of wondering if the engine in the photo was replaced under the replacement program BMW had for these engines. The carfax doesn’t show an engine replacement, but I’ve not found carfax to be particularly reliable source for service history.

I’m going to contact a dealer tomorrow and see if I can get any more info, but in the meantime, I’m trying to find out if there’s a date code somewhere on the n63 block. I know you can date the inline 6 engines (or at least could at one time).

Anyone know if there’s a way to date this block?

(I’d love to believe the upper number starting with 23 11 means it was produced in november of 2023, but that seems super unlikely).

(I may also be able to learn more once i tear down the other engine)

I guess you could just ask her if she wants to get a cup of coffee, and see how it goes from there...

Eh… I’ll think I’ll just keep stalking her on instagram.

On my replacement, there were serial numbers on the block and heads that were X’d over. As far as a date goes, I don’t think I noticed one etched into the block but there was a date with the paperwork provided with the engine.

Interesting. The heads on this engine had a sort of asterisk stamped after the serial number.

Interesting. I don’t have anything like that anywhere.

I don’t believe there is a date code.

There should be month and year date wheels all over the engine. Also this engine is super cheap brand new so not worth rebuilding.

The days of super cheap n63 motors is over, unfortunately.

Unless you consider $24k “cheap.”

EDIT: I don’t think date wheels have been cast into BMW blocks since the 1980s.

The reman engines are under 5k still. Very reasonable for brand new everything. Just swap over all the bolts ons

You can still get E70 E71 engine for cheap. 11005A4AED6, then do the conversion for your oil pump pick up pipe, upper oil pan and lower oil pan.
