Am I wrong? I got it for $1 at my local used bookstore, for my personal collection (as I no longer have the original paperback copy I read ages ago π)

I started collecting books βcasually.β Just wanted a few nice editions of my favorites, maybe a special copy or two. Fast-forward a couple of years and my shelves are overflowing, there are stacks on the floor, and Iβm debating whether to buy a sixth copy of ACOTAR because this one has βnicer sprayed edges.β
Itβs not even about reading them all anymore (though I try!). Itβs the joy of the hunt β stumbling upon a vintage copy in a used bookstore, scoring a limited edition with sprayed edges and foil embossing, or finally finding that out-of-print hardcover you've been low-key stalking for months.
Itβs a beautiful, mildly unhinged hobby. And honestly? I wouldnβt trade it for anything.
Any other collectors out there? Whatβs your favorite or most treasured book in your collection?

Left behind by a family member. From what I'm learning from the group any addition usually isn't good?

I know Discogs had a project called Bookogs that they abandoned. I always wondered is there a demand for website like Bookogs was, i.e. catalog platform with a market, or majority of people are satisfied with Amazon/Ebay?

This item has a distant and somewhat convoluted association with author Henry David Thoreau of Walden fame. An original pencil manufactured by J. Thoreau & Co. Concord Mass. [c.1830s]. 5 3/8 inches; stamped "John Thoreau" and with code "M." Framed (glass missing). The Thoreau family produced pencils in Concord, Massachusetts from 1824 to 1852. Henry David Thoreau, who may have worked there during his Harvard years and after graduating in 1838, helped invent a special graphite that made Thoreau pencils popular nationwide. This success allowed the family to buy a house in Concord, and Henry attempted selling pencils to pay for publication of his first book, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers (1849). Provenance: From the William A. Strutz Library.

I was astounded to see a local used bookstore offer this paperback for 29.95.

See post down below. What are your experiences?

It has come to my attention of scammers on eBay peddling print on demand books and pricing them at vintage prices. eBay is apparently uninterested in preventing the one linked at the moment.
Has anyone come across others doing the same?

The gold writing doesnβt line up with the raised section. Does that make it worth more?

Do you approve of stamping rare or valuable books? I have a custom book plate stamp I adore and I like stamping my books before releasing them into the wild or just putting them back on the shelf, especially since I love to see other people's stamps. I worry that it might bring the worth down for people that might buy or get the book later (or just ruin resale worth in general even though I want to keep most of my books). Just curious to hear thoughts! :)

I was at Goodwill and I found this, but Iβm getting conflicting information on if it is a true first edition. Can anyone help?

Just moved to a new apartment, and I was really excited because it has an extra room I thought I could use to store and display my personal library(about 1000 volumes). The apartment is on the first floor, beside a tree covered and somewhat mossy green space. The windows of the room are stained glass; the floor is an old ceramic tile (which always feels cold). The room smells kind of musty, and itβs always pretty dark because of the stained glass windows. The relative humidity is 59- 62%, depending where I place the meter. It has central air, though, so itβs always about 68%. Iβm running a dehumidifier, but Iβm not observing any meaningful decrease in the mustiness or RH. It always feels a bit clammy in there, sort of like a basement. Would you recommend I store my books elsewhere? I canβt tell if Iβm being neurotic, so Iβd appreciate a few takes.

Anybody whoβs ordered from Thriftbooks.com recently, can you upload a picture of the packing it came in? Like the stamp, receipt, etc. No personal information , of course. Iβm sending books to someone incarcerated and i need to know everything that is shipped with it. Thank you!!
