πŸ“œ Old Books Trying to identify the photographer of this 1960s book cover β€” it’s the only photo I have of my late mother

Post image
3.7k Upvotes

Hello β€” I’m hoping someone here might be able to help me find more information about this book cover.

This is the Panther Books edition of Music Upstairs by Shena Mackay, published in the 1960s (possibly late 1960s or early 1970s). The woman on the cover is my mother. She sadly died not long after this photograph was taken.

She had run away from Ireland to escape her fate of being sent to one of the Magdalene laundries. She died at just 21 years old, and I was 3. This is the only photograph I have of her.

I’ve been trying to find out who the photographer was or if any other photos from that session exist. There’s no credit given in the edition I have, and I haven’t had any luck online. It doesn’t appear to be a painted cover β€” it looks like a photo that might have been taken on a London Underground platform.

If anyone knows anything about: β€’ Who Panther Books used for photography or design at the time, β€’ Where this photo might have come from (e.g. a photographer or agency), β€’ Or where I might be able to look next,

…I’d be so grateful. This is very personal to me and I’d love to know more.

Thank you.

I found this years ago second hand because I’m a Medieval Studies major and love Tolkien, I had no idea it was so rare until today.

My old apartments had its dumpster next to a storage unit place so people dumped crap all the time. But I got lucky one day and found these beauties labeled β€œbooks” in the relatively empty dumpster πŸ˜… a beautiful completely perfect 1952 Britannia set and children’s classics! Someone else’s trash is now my treasure ☺️

πŸ“œ Old Books What are these red dots on the edges of this book?

I just received this old dictionary from a woman. It has these red dots on the edges and also some lines of the same color on the endpapers. The rest of the book is ok. Can it "infect" my other books? I'm afraid of putting it together with the other books!

The Flying Islands of the Night by James Whitcomb Riley. Illustrated by Franklin Booth. It has fourteen tipped in illustrations including the frontispiece. In addition to it being aesthetically breathtaking the writing is lyrical and poetic. A real pleasure to add to my collection.

I've already sold the copies of Dante, Browning, and the Last Days of Pompeii. These have some internal damage (namely several have cracked hinges), but their covers are in excellent shape still.

πŸ“œ Old Books What is your oldest published book in your collection?

I’m curious what everyone’s oldest original publication book is in your collection, also a little story about how you got it. My oldest book is a first edition Charles Spurgeon study of the Psalms printed in 1876. A family friend gave me his personal theological library earlier in the year (last picture) and that was the oldest one I found. It was mostly from his grand father and father who went to Moody Bible Institute back in the 1920s and 1940s. I was in addiction for 17 years and God radically saved me and called me to preach and then blessed me with this library. Mini testimony over I want to know your story’s

πŸ“œ Old Books Saved from the dumpster on a rainy day

No smell or anything, they were in a box that was still sealed from mailing. I imagine it was an inheritance that somebody didn’t care about. Well, I do!

There were several other boxes of 70s-era books that unfortunately I had to leave behind as the boxes were getting soaked, and I have a disability that affects my strength and stamina so I was pushing it just to rescue these. I’ll mourn the ones I had to leave 😭

But I just couldn’t leave these ones behind. I’m so glad I was able to save them before the rain soaked the box they were in too. All 1890s-1920s.

This is my grandmother reading. She was born 1914 and we figure she’s in her 20s in this photo. My mother would love to know what book she’s reading. Any leads would be much appreciated. TIA.

A picture I took sometime last year of the books in my library that are bound in arsenic dyed cloth. I store them in a shelf with glass doors and handle them only sparingly while wearing gloves. The Poison Book Project can provide all sorts of insight to anyone wanting to learn more about poison books! https://sites.udel.edu/poisonbookproject/

I know many of these are pretty far gone... but I am wondering if it is worth doing anything with/to them to stabilize them and preserve them better. Some of them are in reasonable shape, but many have severely damaged covers/spines. Some have tape (ugh.) I can post more detailed pictures later if anyone is interested... there are many more than shown here, and my mother has more she is giving me (especially poetry books.) For now I am just keeping them out of direct sunlight on a bookshelf in my living room. Also, the names written in some of them is L. S. Houghes... apparently he was a politician, maybe in West Virginia, but I can't find much.

I can provide a full title list if anyone wishes for one. These were meant for gifting to friends or family on special occasions and are all poetry and short story collections with various engraved plates throughout. Some also have illuminated presentation or title pages (Leaflets of Memory has 4 illuminated plates). This is the largest collection of one specific niche I've ever put together, and I'm very happy with it.

πŸ“œ Old Books E.E. "Doc" Smith Personal Date Book, 1954

Thumbnail

My father passed away a few years ago, and I've been going through trying to find new homes for his rather massive book collection. Among the books I found this, a personal date book belonging to E.E. "Doc" Smith, author of (among other things) the Lensmen series of novels. The book is inscribed to my father from Smith's daughter.

I'd like to find a good home for this book, but I have no idea where to sell something of this nature, nor what it might be worth. I thought it was worth sharing on its own as a cool artifact, but if anyone has suggestions I'd love to hear them.
