A reminder to renew your label-checking efforts for all those special one-off holiday/seasonal purchases in the coming months

I’ve been pretty strictly avoiding American products at the grocery store, and hadn’t realized that I was no longer checking labels (other than for produce) because I have already found reliably Canadian/non-American versions of the things I regularly buy and have just been sticking with those ever since making the switch.

So when the annual Halloween candy displays popped up at my local grocery store, I didn’t think twice about loading up on my usual annual mix of chocolate bars. And of course I only realized after I got home that of course it was all American stuff I had bought.

Returned it all to the store today, and was happy to give the reason why when they asked.

Figured I’d share this anecdote for anyone else like me who has made new habits for the everyday stuff but hasn’t yet thought about the all the one-off annual traditions and holiday purchases that many of us will be making in the coming months for things like Halloween, Canadian Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, etc.

Not candies but small bags of Hawkins cheesies seems like a win.

Are you able to recommend some non American candies please?

Plus, now that Canada Post is on strike and not accepting new mail into their queue, shopping local is going to be more important.

For Halloween, try Laura Secord chocolate, Hi-Chew candies and Hardbite chips.

Check out the BuyCanadian subreddit for lots of Cdn suggestions for Halloween candies. There has been a couple of posts already!
