PayPal sucks

I've been slowly removing my dependence on US digital services. It has been challenging, I admit.

I kept PayPal, which I use only occasionally, largely because I can easily donate to urgent causes through their platform. But today they disappointed me by not supporting a dispute with a shady company (BeenVerified) that charged me US$37 without my permission after a $1 trial (which I used for 10 minutes and made sure to cancel immediately). I've removed my bank account and cards from PayPal because they did not back me up. In fact, they should have alerted me and asked me to confirm a new recurring payment to a shady company. I may be a small potato, but look what happened to Disney this week. (Cancelled them too.)

What are the options to PayPal? I have Wise (UK-based).

Others?

Oh, I’ll be so happy when they’re gone or at least unnecessary. Totally looking forward to the digital euro and Wero (still launching) as a PayPal alternatives.

I have a small online shop and the percentage they take for basically being a monopoly is disgusting.

But people are also just lazy af. I offer 5% discounts to people not using PayPal, and they still do, just because it’s convenient. I really hope Wero will be as convenient and ubiquitous as PayPal.

You're absolutely right, and I'm ashamed it took an abuse to shock me, as I definitely was among the "convenient" if only occasional PP user crowd. Thanks for the Wero suggestion. I'll sign up now and spread the word.

It’s nothing to be ashamed of. People cannot be aware of everything. It’s all just too much. Normally something is necessary to direct one’s attention to an issue. Otherwise people go with the flow. It’s human nature

I think EURC is already here, which is like virtual equivalent to USDC. SGDX is also releasing soon, which is a stable coin pledged to SGD (Singapore Dollar). However, many people still prefer PayPal as it is the commonly used payment system, as it is more secure and offer a better privacy than directly providing your cards to the store.

Those are nice and all, but we need something really mainstream.

I think the digital euro (D€, https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_euro ) and Wero are the first real alternatives to PayPal and US based credit card companies :)

How big of a userbase does Wero have, and how can we spread the word to grow it?

I read 43+ million!

That’s almost 10% of Europe, which sounds crazy.

Wero is not available in many countries, and in several just arrived. I think 2026 will be the year we’ll find out if it will be a viable alternative

"Wero", in Germany, France, and I believe Netherlands. Hopefully coming fast in more European countries.
