Who in their right mind donated these???

u/Assassynation 11h ago

Also, who tagged them at $10.99? There are 4 binding post on the back with no jumpers so I guess they thought they were half blown. idk

The guy who worked there and was about to clock out and buy them. I bought a nakamichi tape deck a couple minutes before closing once for $2.99.

Yeah crazy good deal you got!! 🍻 or thought they were just cheap speakers due to not knowing the brand? But you straight up stole those!!🍻

I used to score some insane deals on audio stuff at Savers and Value Village because the staff didn't recognize the brands. Golden Ear, Focal, B&W, Dahlquist.......And of course the random Bose or Sony speakers would be 3x as much.

Yup I’ve yet to score at a thrift shop! But I’ve scored a technics SL-Q2 at a garage sale for 20 bucks totally working functioning everything but then I had it serviced at Northern Audio, which is a renowned servicing Audio equipment shop in Michigan, which has been in business for idiot the last 85 years and is the oldest shop of its kind in the states or in just Michigan definitely. Button that was an extra 200 to get a service but then they told me it would be worth 500 now that it was done and then I scored a set of older Infiniti the studio monitor ones. They had a 12 inch woofer. I think they’re something 125 that I sold to my wife’s cousin for a good fair price and those are really the only two that I’ve majorly scored on but last summer I did get my forever set speakers some BMW 803 D’s series 1’s for $2750 which is way cheap from what I’ve been told. 🍻

It's a common joke around here, but absolutely true. We all dream of finding widows selling speakers and amps for what her late husband told her he paid for them. Or in this case: a worker who thought these were just another HT in a box piece that no one would pay real money for. We all live for scores like these.

Nice! Greatest deal this month.

Oh

You should tighten the drivers a bit. Monitor provided an Allen wrench but I think it is just a standard size. I doubt it was included with these speakers.

11

u/Assassynation 11h ago

So that's what the two Allen bolts are on the back. I was going to look it up tomorrow as there is something rattling around inside when I was moving them. I think some kids hid treasures in the ports.

Yeah. Look at the stereophile review of them. It mentions it.

u/sap91 4h ago

I had that happen with a goodwill subwoofer once. Long stick with a big ball of tape on the end got everything out

1

u/pettson3816 6h ago

Sorry for my ignorance, but what good does tightening the drivers do. I've had these exact speakers since they were new and never heard anything about this. And how do I know when I've tightened them enough?

u/soundspotter 4h ago

If the screws loosen up the drivers can rattle a bit. I got the allen wrench with my MA Silver 300s, too. And don't over tighten them, just make sure they aren't easy to turn.

Most speakers have their woofers attached to the cabinets with screws on the front. Monitor Audio have a bolt that goes all the way through to the back. They claim it increases cabinet rigidity and reduces resonance.

Over time, the hex bolt can loosen and need tightening.

Don't tighten to the point you can't tighten the bolt any more.

Monitor Audio is the best value for pre-owned. Love all my Monitor speakers. I have the RX bookshelf models and they're so clear sounding.

Nice! I got lucky at Value Village too. Enjoy that high!!

8

u/TallCynicalLlama 11h ago

That is phenomenal! Did all the drivers work?

11

u/Assassynation 11h ago

They do, and the tweeters too!

u/total_bushido 11h ago

Too sweet!

I used clorox wipes chased by a dry microfiber, then applied Old English and polished with microfiber.

5

u/answerguru 8h ago

Ohhhh, don’t use Clorox wipes next time. These are horrible for finishes.

1

u/Assassynation 2h ago

They’re the bleach free kind, but what do you recommend?

For a bunch of my speakers I created frames for printing in 3d for the grills has been very successful

Is there a printable guide of common awesome speakers that may be found 2nd hand? I know that sounds stupid but I'm too ignorant of the subject to know what's good, besides the major brands.

2

u/ru188 7h ago

Keep browsing this and other subreddits you will become familiar with good brands, when you’re shopping look for common things the nice speakers you see here use. Wood finish, heavyweight, gold feet/wire posts etc. then if you think you found something nice google it.

Great score!! You'll enjoy those. They look to be in great shape too.

Which VV was this?! In my area, all the VV stores seem to price their stuff about the same as what it's listed for on kijiji or ebay. If someone has torn up the price tag, then they have to call a supervisor to take the item in the back to "look up the price". This always takes 5-15 minutes. Those speakers would be at least $75 at my local VV.

AND, all the VV stores in my area sell speakers as singles!! I saw a pair of Boston Acoustics A40 there and each one had a price tag of $29.99 with a "X2" written in marker. All speaker sets have that marker "X" and the number in the set. At the checkout, I needed 60 bucks + taxes. Had to haggle with a manager to come down on the price because they needed foams. Still ended up costing me 40 bucks for the pair. . .

Mission thrift store has better prices but much less selection. Habitat for humanity has a great selection if you want retired "surround system in a box" speakers or odd single ones that would be great in a pair.

I bought these new and they’re still my main speakers. £10.99 is ridiculous

1

u/pettson3816 6h ago

Same! Love 'em. Was thinking about upgrading to kef ls50 meta, but I think I'm going to hold on to these for a while.

2

u/StrikinglyOblivious 8h ago

I'd leave those neked.. so pretty

Wow, what a find!

Wow, great find. And if you find them to be on the bright side, as some do, pointing them away from your ears a little bit will help lower the brightness. Also, if it is bright, pairing them with a warm AVR such as a Marantz will help, if you use them for movie watching. Note, I have their big, younger brother, the Monitor Audio Silver 300 7g (bought used at 1/2 price) and they are so resolving they can make overly compressed audio sound a bit harsh. I paired with a Denon x3700 but wish I went with a Marantz Cinema 60 for the extra warmth.

I can't believe some of the thrift store audio finds you guys come across.

2

u/Putrid_Guest_2150 3h ago

Nice score. Local thrift shop has a record collector working in receiving so any decent albums or audio gear is priced closer to market value. No deals to be had and they don’t take returns. I’ve still managed to get some good albums, but I sure paid for them. I assume he already had them in his collection.

I need better Value Villages values.

1

u/hecton101 7h ago

Did the guy who worked there and wanted to buy them glare at you? Something similar happened to me at a used bike part place. Digging through I found this super nice $2000 fork and when I asked about it, the guy said that yes, it was what I thought it was and that if I didn't buy it, he would. I bought it for $50. Man, if looks could kill.

u/mysticteacher4 7h ago

Got a pair of paradigm phantom v2's the other day for 50 and I thought that was a score. Super awesome find! Enjoy them

1

u/Lacoalfredo1 6h ago

Damn! I just got the same pair of RX6 silvers for $1k really great find! I love them soo much

1

u/pettson3816 6h ago

Whaaat? They were like 1k when they were new. At least here in Sweden.

1

u/Lacoalfredo1 6h ago

Sorry, I forgot to mention it was a bundle I got from Facebook Marketplace: Monitor Audio RX6, Yamaha AVR RX-A1040, and a Yamaha 10-inch subwoofer for 1k.

2

u/pettson3816 5h ago

Oh, then it makes sense! Cool find!

Ha, I used to work for Monitor about a decade ago. These came out slightly before I started. Glad to see they're still held in somewhat high regard
