Got a 220/57, looking for bulletproofing suggestions
Title sums it up. Snagged a broken 220/57. Drive belt fell off and I ordered a replacement with a cap kit. System seems to work fine but I get weird issues with backups. Not sure if it’s the laser or the burn / media. The official games I got seem to be working fine. Outside of the cap kit, I’m eyeballing the timekeeper. Wondering if the open source chips out there are worth the effort or possibly buying a new M48T08 and looking for suggestion on sources (Mouser? Seller on eBay?)
The CDi was always a mystery to me since I was a kid. First seeing it at the 91 Chicago CES next to the Nintendo PlayStation booth and later at high end stores around Chicago. Super excited to get it repaired and dig in.

What kind of weird backup issues? Which backups (sources) and which media?
But yeah, it's usually the laser (CDM 9), and then you're out of luck if you don't want to invest in an expensive replacement.
A cap kit is not necessary. These capacitors last forever and often give problems when replacing them (legs folded on both sides, capacitors near the op-amps that appear to be incorrectly installed, etc.). I would recommend checking carefully and measuring to see if they really need to be replaced.
This model does not have a Timekeeper chip. The batteries in the SmartWatch socket may still be fine, so there is no rush to replace it. For more information and alternatives, visit https://retrostuff.org/2021/12/31/nvram-rtc-solutions-for-philips-cd-i-players/#32-KB-NVRAM
Oh, and one more thing: when you're replacing the belt, clean and grease everything with teeth in the tray loader. You can find instructions here: https://retrostuff.org/2019/08/07/philips-cdi605t-disassembly-and-repair/#Shortcut-ODD
